the Vale of Glamorgan is a great place to live and work. it is an area blessed with vibrant communities with excellent venues at their heart.
this Community Venue Guide aims to highlight the wide range of venues that exist in the Vale available for public use. many people may not be aware that one exists on their doorstep, or may not have considered using it. the venues range from small one roomed halls to larger multi use facilities, including performance spaces.
the cost of hiring local facilities included in this guide is often a lot less than you might think.
We hope that you will consider using this guide the next time you are thinking of a venue for a celebration, class or community event. many venues also host a wide variety of activities so why not go along and see what’s on.
By using these local venues, often run entirely by volunteers, you will help to sustain them in the long term. don’t forget to let the venues know where you heard about them.
every care has been taken in the production of this directory; however, the accuracy depends entirely on information received by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

try and think about the equipment that you will need. you cannot assume that venues either have the equipment or are able to offer the equipment for free. it is always worth checking with venues as they may have equipment that you might not have expected them to have. Here are a few things worth thinking about:• tables & chairs• Staging• extension cables• Crockery / glasses• Screens / flip charts • Blackout curtains• Kitchen equipment, including tea & coffee

Are you in need of a bit of rural stress relief? Why not make the most of the wonderful Vale of Glamorgan coast & countryside by booking a community venue for your meetings, conferences or away days. Venues are often reasonably priced and will give you the chance to get out of the office for a change. you also get to tick the corporate social responsibility box by helping to sustain community facilities.

make a point of visiting the venue before booking it, but make sure that you check that the time to do this is convenient for those who run it. Remember, not all venues are easy to find!
size matters – GettinG it riGht
Be sure to check the size of the venue to make sure that it is right for the intended use. Small events in large open spaces can seem dwarfed, and at the same time nobody likes to be squashed in. the numbers used in this guide may relate to seated or standing capacity so be sure to check how many people can be accommodated. Something as simple as the shape and size of table can determine the number of people that will fit into the space.

try and find a venue that will best suit your requirements. Some venues may have restrictions on the type of events that they can hold. For example, an 18th bir thday party lasting until 1am may not go down well in the heart of a small village. make it clear when booking what you plan to hire the venue for and be clear about how long you need it for. it will make for a better organised and enjoyable event in the end.

our new contact centre makes it as easy as possible for Vale residents to request a service, report a problem and have queries answered. the 40 specially-trained and friendly call-handlers at the centre also include eight Welsh speakers, so callers can opt to have their enquiry dealt with in Welsh. have several separate queries, they can now all be dealt with centrally rather than you being transferred to separate departments. Currently the contact centre is open from 8am to 6pm monday to friday, though there are plans to extend the opening hours until 8pm. it is intended to extend this to a 24/7 service as the service expands. Call handlers find that their busiest times are 8.30am to 12pm, with monday the most popular day for callers.

the smaller Community Room is ideal for small meetings for up to 8 people. the Phillip John Room will hold 16-20 people around tables or accommodate more people if the tables are removed. this larger room is ideal for larger meetings and for training.
the rooms adjoin each other with an interconnecting door so could be booked together if a break-out room or a catering room is required. Both come fully equipped with a flip chart and free wireless access to
the internet. the larger room also has a data projector available. the library provides a hot drinks machine, for a charge, and can also suggest caterers if lunch is required on site.

the County Library has two rooms available for community use. Both are on the first floor of the library overlooking King Square in the centre of town. Parking is available at the rear of the library from 9.30 each day, and there is fur ther parking in a free multi-storey car park a short walk along Holton Road.
