Venture Jam

On the 19th of October Connie and Kyle went to Glasgow for a Venture Jam event held at the Glasgow science centre. Venture Jam is

an annual event where young people between 14 to 25 taking part in solving an international problem that ’s effecting worldwide, this

year the main focus was plastics. On the 19th of October Connie and Kyle went on the 8 o’clock plane to Glasgow and landed in Glasgow

at 9 o’clock, We then got a taxi to our hotel and got ready to go to the science centre and meet new people and finding out what activi-

ties we will have to do. When we got to the Science centre we got a tour around and went into a big dome called the planetarium. We

had a little talk with The Young Scot leader Alan. He talked to us about what we will be doing in the next two days and one of the sci-

ence centre workers talked us through about space, it was very interesting! We then got into our groups and did a quiz around the

Science Centre. The next day they talked to us about how we can reduce litter and all the litter they have found around the UK, what

litter is in the sea, laying on the ground and what’s been flushed down our toilet. They told us that in 2050 there would be more litter

in the sea than fish, and if we start now we can try and reduce the litter in the sea and stop the animals being damaged by the litter.

That day we started to plan our ideas and creating our pitch. Our plan was to create an app where you can scan your litter that you are

putting into the recycling bin and to scan your bin and by that you can earn points. With that points you will be able to get enough

points by getting a discount ticket from Hydro. We also created a song Called ‘The Litter Song’ We thought of these ideas because

people think that recycling is boring and we thought we could put in our own little twist to make people want to recycle and earn dis-

counts. We created a song that will be catchy and for people to do their own little twist on it. We thought about celebrities singing our

song with a little twist on it and getting their fans to do it too! And that will be hopefully get the word out and be viral. On the third

day we started to practise our pitch and finalized it before we presented it the rest of the groups. After a very tough round of pre-

senting our pitches a group called “the tiny turtles” won with their twist on the Scottish anthem called “The plastic of Scotland”. We

sadly didn’t win but we made really good friends there and can’t wait for next year!

The Litter Song (Rap)

Get that litter of my lain,

Put that liquid down a drain,

Stop contamination,

It will save the nation,

This is a start of a new SALVATION!

Big Scottish Breakfast

STV Children’s Appeal

S2 Pupils of Mid Yell Junior High School helped to organise “The Big Scottish Breakfast”. This event took place on 05 October 2018 from 0845 - 0915. All school pupils and staff were welcome to have breakfast together to raise money for The STV Children’s Appeal. This char-ity raises money to help families across Scotland who are living in poverty. At our fundraiser S2 pupils decided what they were going to serve at breakfast and helped to serve it on the day. There was a selection of bacon rolls, toast with various toppings, a variety of cereals as well as fruit juices, milk or hot chocolate. Afterwards S2 pupils also helped with the washing up. The morning was a great success and as a school we

managed to raise a total of £238.44 !!

Switch Off Fortnight 2018 Eco School’s Energy team initiative involved MYJHS in Switch Off Fortnight between 20th of November and 4th December.

Natalia, Jodie, Laila, Lola, Jasmin L and Amanda monitored the improvements in switching off lights, computers and interactive whiteboards whenever they are not in use.

They also prepared indoor and outdoor “energy Hunt/Quiz” .

Shetland Schools Badminton

Tournament

On the 28th of November 2018 the Shetland schools' badminton competition took place in the Scalloway hall; there were around 14 boys and 7 girls. The two mid yell pupils were Martha and Yann; Martha came third place (if she had won one more, she would have gotten the opportunity to go down to Perth in the Scotland school Badminton competition) Yann got 2nd place in the com-petition and Yann can now go down to Perth which is good for the school for him to represent the school and Shetland. Mind Your Head

From Wednesday the 31st October, P6-7 and S1-2 went to the Social Studies room to work with Loren Manson from Mind-Your-Head. We were working on worries and how you feel about yourself. We drew some plants that we had helped to grow, and pretend-ed they were worry plants. We realised the more you tend to them, the more they grow. On the 2nd last week with Loren, she put a mirror in the bottom of the box and told us we could look in the box one by one, and not tell anyone what we saw. We wrote down what we saw, and most of us just wrote ‘Me’ or ‘Myself’! She explained it was the most important thing in the world, and we all thought it might be Honey, her cute little puppy! We worked on other people’s worries from other schools, but we didn’t know who they were. We had to write down in pairs who they could go to, distractions, what would make them feel bet-ter and words of advice. We also wrote down one of our own worries and put them in a bottle. Loren shook it up and read out a few. We solved them, but she never said the name of who wrote it. We had a great time with Loren, and I think we would all go back if we could. By Teagan Johnson, P7

Camping Club adventures

On Friday 14th September, a small group of pupils and teachers went out to go on a camping trip just outside the Sandwick school. Malin Leslie, Lily Hansen, Honor Smith and their group of teachers Mrs Tulloch, Miss Andrew and Miss Watts all set out on the 3pm ferry to toft and then drove to the Sandwick school where they then met the group of Sandwick campers. While the Yell group were on their way, they stopped for a quick tour of the Lawrence Odie Knitwear factory. Once they ar-rived at the school they decided where to pitch their tents, pitched them and prepared for dinner. They had along side the Sandwick campers. Once dinner was cooked and eaten they then went inside for some team building games. With the games finished they went out-side to finally make some s’mores and go to their tents to sleep. On the 15th it was an early start for everyone as they got up and had some breakfast. Eventually it was time for them to head off as Malin went to baton twirl-ing, as they got off of the ferry it was straight to the school to be picked up and taken home.

WW1 Afternoon

On Thursday 15th November, the Upper Primary invited their family members into school to share with them their learning about World War One. All members of the class contributed towards presentations followed by an explana-tion of the different areas of learning they had taken part in. The upper primary were delighted that so many mem-bers of the community supported this event and would like to thank everyone who came. In particular, a huge thanks must be paid to Annette Jamieson who supported them greatly with this topic.

Let’s Think About Plastic

How plastic is made? Plastic is made from oil and natural gas and comes from far underground. The Erasmus Project is…. A chance for pupils from Reunion Island to come up here in June 2019 and us to visit them in May/June 2020 and a chance for pupils from Switzerland to do the same with Unst pupils. Our experience on eTwinning. On eTwinning we wrote a little bit about ourselves in a pro-file and read others’ from pupils from Reunion Island. We have asked them questions or commented on their profile. Future visit from… RSPB Karen McKelvie to talk about the impact of plastics on wildlife on the 4th of February. Angela Mouat science technician, will show us how to make plastic back into oil on the 14th of December. Amy Gear will come to speak about Zero Waste Shetland and help us create a sign

Young Ambassador Conference in Lerwick In November Kieran, Calum, Carly and Olivia from MYJHS went to Islesburgh in Lerwick to represent the school as Young Ambassadors at the annual Shetland Young Ambassador Conference. The day started with a welcome, and we split into groups alongside other children from Shetland. We learnt about effective ways of delivering activities, and we also learnt about communication with one another. After a break for lunch, we learnt about the benefits to your mental health that are created by being fit and healthy, such as feeling fitter and happier. We would like to thank Mr Hall for taking us down and back to Lerwick from the school on the day. Calum Graham, S3 Young Ambassador

Science visits This term we have been learning about renewable and non-renewable energy. We have had people visiting to tell us about their jobs. The people who came to speak to us were called Duncan Thomason, Andrew Nisbet and a company called NOVA Inovations. Duncan Thomason works for the Total company. He came because he was telling us about the gas. His job is the operator making sure every things ok. Andrew Nisbet is a volunteer for the North Yell develop-ment council. We have been working towards getting five wind turbines. They are now up and are successfully up and running. NOVA Innovations is a company that they have three tidal turbines in Bluemull sound. It’s a world first, they have put in 3 tidal windmills. Adam Priest came to the School to talk about Sullom voe, it has just completed 40 years of service and experts predict that that is only half way to the end of the ser-vice for the plant. They have recently celebrated 8 Bil-lion barrels. We appreciate that they have taken their own time to talk to us about their jobs.

Edinburgh Uni Bioinformatics Workshop for S3&4’s

(Bioinformatics workshop with staff from St Andrews and Edinburgh university)

Unst pupils came across to join us and we learned about how Biology, Statistics (Maths) and computing are used together to look at DNA. We investigated what types of animal DNA was present in a 100% pork sausages. We found human, cow, chicken and pig DNA in the sausage. It was due to contamination.

Growth Mindset

As part of our School Improvement Plan 2018-2019, we are focusing on developing a Growth Mindset ethos within our school and would like your support with this at home. The concept of growth mindset has been widely re-searched and is linked to raised attainment. It is be-lieved that the most successful learners embody a growth mindset whilst some learners do not believe they can ever be successful. We believe that through encouraging pupils to develop a growth mindset, both at home and at school, they will become more resilient in facing challenges and have a more positive approach when learning something new. We would like to encour-age all our pupils to believe that if they try hard and persevere, they can achieve success. Throughout the school year, we will have a monthly growth mindset focus. We will discuss this at assembly and encourage pupils to embody the focus throughout the month, and beyond. We will also supply each pupil with a small growth mindset table for their homework diaries to encourage this out of school.

October – Everyone can learn! November – I am a valued member of this learning community! December – We love a challenge! January – Feedback is a gift – accept it! February – A goal without a plan is just a wish! March – Mistakes are opportunities for learning! April – There is a difference between not knowing and not knowing yet! May – I’ve got this! June – A new day is a new opportunity to grow!

Batten Doon da Hatches On Sunday the 18th of November the school had a ‘batten doon da hatches day’ which lots of parents, community members and some pupils attended. They managed to dell up and pot/bag hawthorn bushes which we’re selling at the Mid Yell shopping night, dell yard and lay carpets and stow the new polycrub on the raised beds in the old polycrub and plant more bulbs. We have got a delivery of our new polycrub and intend to put it up in the spring. We are getting a shed which we will be putting up in the next couple months. This month we are one of the charities in the Tesco’s tokens we hope you show your support. By Jasmine Lawson and Dylan Henderson

Girls football

Mid Yell Junior High School’s Girls Football team travelled to the 60:40 centre at Clickimin to have their first match against AHS. Their Captain, Connie Dickie, put the girls through their warm up before the match and did a great job on the day. The girls played bril-liantly and even though they lost it never dampened their spirits and they sang the whole way back to Yell. Well done lasses.

Angela Mouat meet with S1& S2

Angela Mouat is a Science Technician based in Lerwick. She came to speak with S1 and S2 ’s about plastic and the importance of looking for alternatives that could effectively substitute plastic in the future. The reason for it is that only 2 out of 7 types of plastic we can recycle (PET– water bottles, and HDPE– milk, shampoo containers). The other types: PVC (cling film), LDPE (crisps packaging), PP (fishing nets), PS (disposable cutlery) will end up in landfill eventually. (In UK 2.5 million tonnes of plastic goes into landfill every year!) Furthermore as we look at the different items made out of plastic it becomes apparent that there is no clear marking, as to what types they are. Many of these items are contaminated with the harmful microplastic according to Mrs Mouat but customers can ’t make in-formed choices if they simply don’t know about it. Mrs Mouat told us also about a method that has been developed in Japan in 2010 and it ’s about converting the plastic into oil. She was able to give us a demo of this process, which uses pressure, steam and temperature to breaks down plastic and indeed- it resulted in a waxy residue. We learnt about an AHS teacher who decided to challenge herself and went 1 year plastic free. It turned out to be very difficult as she realised how many plastic products she is using everyday, like the favourite glass jar of peanut butter that had the little plastic seal around the lid, toilet paper packaging, shampoo bottles, tooth brushes etc etc..

Senior Citizen’s Christmas Dinner

On Wednesday the 12th December we held our annual senior citizens Christmas lunch. We had over 60

local folk come to enjoy the delicious dinner which was cooked by Alana and her team. They were also entertained by the pupils who per-

formed, played instruments and even sang a special dialect version of

Away in a manger– which was beauti-ful. This years S2 class were on

hand to sell raffle tickets, wait on the tables , marshal and show people

to their seats. An enjoyable afternoon was had by

everyone.

Italian Night On Wednesday the 7th of November, S3/4 took over LJ’s for the day. We worked in partnership with LJ’s in line for devel-oping the young workforce. We got a visit from Hazel, Hannah and Jan and talked about what roles there is within a busi-ness. Some of us were working on the business side and some the hospitality side. Hazel dished out roles for the business side and got given tasks to complete. We Planned everything along with LJ’s including menu, advertising, accountant, table plans, tickets, kitchen plan, customer service, hospitality liaison, marketing and PR, project manager, deputy project manag-er and record keeper. There was a lot of responsibilities and we had to work together and get things done in a short period of time. The hospitality team had to come up with a menu within 5 days. After all the chaos was over we had an induction and a health and safety check/evaluation. The day finally came and the hospitality team prepared for the night, they started at 11 o’clock and worked through the day. Some of us were prepping the vegetables for the soup and some us made bread and pasta. We then got to make dessert When the school day ended then all the business team came over and deco-rated the tables and went over the waiting sides. the hospitality people were split into groups, Ben, Kyle, Melissa and Leah were on the team with Hazel side making the bread, pasta, salad and vegetables and Kimberly, Carly and Connie were with Hannah.
