Workers who inhale dust on demolition sites can be at risk for lung problems. Wearing protective gear,
including a respirator, when working around older buildings, where dust, gas, chemicals textiles, and silica,
among other issues, can help.
Why are the lungs important to the body?
Every cell in your body needs oxygen to live. The air we breathe contains oxygen and other gases. Once in
the lungs, oxygen is moved into the bloodstream and carried through the body. At each cell in the body,
oxygen is exchanges for a waste gas called carbon dioxide.
How do the lungs work?
The heart pumps oxygenated blood to the cells of the tissues and organs. The cells use the oxygen carbon
dioxide is produced and absorbed into the blood. This blood is carried back to the lungs where it is removed
when we exhale.
What can cause damage to the lungs?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): Conditions defined by an inability to exhale normally/ Chron-
ic bronchitis: A form of COPD characterized by a chronic productive cough. Emphysema: lung damage where
air is trapped in the lungs, another form of COPD.
Lung disease is slow, debilitating and can be deadly. In the construction industry, the worker might inhale
dust that penetrates the lungs which can slowly cause them to scar over. It can be decades before lung
disease develops. Reactions vary. Some people develop wheezing, coughing, scarring, or an inability to
normally exhale and restrictive lung disease even after exposure has ceased.
Most occupational lung diseases are preventable. on the other hand, they are often incurable.
Reducing the amount of dust in the air can be achieved by wetting down or vacuuming working surfaces.
Proper use of respirators can prevent workers from inhaling dust in the air.
OSHA has developed a crystalline silica and a beryllium fact sheet. www.osha.gov/silica and www.osha.gov/
beryllium These are two standards to protect workers, construction as well as general industry and maritime
employees.
