on johns mind As I am sitting in front of the computer tonight the weather outside is absolutely rotten. Not in the sense that it is smelly rotten but windy and wet,wet rotten ! WINTER has arrived ! No more watering the garden plants but you may be using more electricity, so the power bill goes up and the water bill goes down. What a Yoyo. Not very good for my next

project – Renovating my leaky deck ! Yes I noticed a few damp patches on the ceiling of my carport some time ago and thought nothing of it but after a couple of winters it has become a major ! The galvanised long-run under the decking has rusted thru and if not for the good ol’ chinese tarpaulin that I got from the Warehouse ‘where everyone gets a bargain’ I would be having a shower every time I use my Hyundai when it rains. Yeah. And with all the other jobbies piling up I guess I’ll just sleep over it. Yawn n n. There has been some good news since the last newsletter, the police has matched the fingerprints left by the person when they broke into our home, Yeah ! The negative side of this is that they are dealing with a minor ( under 17yr when the crime was committed)) so usually they are on curfew and home detention ? ? As this person ( a female ) has committed other burglaries since breaking into our property the Police hope to have this girl prosecuted as an adult and hopefully do some time in jail. Well we shall see as the case is later this month.

Chairmans message Winter has hit with a

vengeance this week as I

write this article. Since my

last report it has been a busy

time for our community.

At the end of March you elected a new committee

to help run the Association for the next 2 years.

We welcome several new committee

members, Connie Lui, Michelle Wai, Wong Liu

Sheung, Jennie Sew Hoy and Donald Sew Hoy.

Cathrine Ming has been elected as Treasurer and

she brings with her a wealth of experience in

accounting for non- profit organisations.

A large contingent of 90 people represented

Auckland at Easter in Dunedin. This year we

achieved some very good results which will hold

us well in the next few years with the junior

basketball teams sweeping all that stood in front

of them.

The main message I would like to impress on the

membership in this newsletter is that on Sunday

July 12 we will be holding a function to celebrate

the Auckland Branch 80th Birthday and

the book launch of the NZCA History book -

Turning Stone to Jade. The function will be

a luncheon at Alexandra Park in Greenlane.

Please see further in the newsletter for details.

It is a great opportunity for the community to

come together to celebrate this milestone. So

make up a table of family and friends and come

out to renew old acquaintances and make new

ones. I hope to see you all there on the day to

celebrate our community.

CHINESE POLL TAX HERITAGE

TRUST –

RESEARCH PROJECT ON CHINESE

LAUNDRIES IN NEW ZEALAND

Some of us may remember the local

Chinese laundry, where our parents or

grandparents worked for long hours in hot,

steamy conditions. Laundry work was one of

the main occupations that Chinese

immigrants to New Zealand took up after the

gold rushes, along with market gardening and

fruit and vegetable and grocery stores.

Chinese laundries were so prevalent by the

late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries,

they became an ethnic stereotype, particularly

in the United States and Canada.

The Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust has

commissioned a project to research and

produce a publication on the history of

Chinese owned and operated laundries in

New Zealand. We need to ensure that this

significant part of New Zealand’s social

history is not lost; this project aims to

preserve our memories of those times.

2015- NZCA – National Trip to the Far

North – REPORT

a Group of Chinese from all over New Zealand joined

in this historic event – Poon Fah unveiled their

Itinerary

7.00am Leaving Auckland Saturday 2nd May 2015 for Dargaville

Countdown car park, cnr Greenlane Road and Great

South Rd. Be there by 6.45am

10.00am Arrive at Dargaville, Short break. Bring a snack and a drink for

yourself.

10.30am Leave for Te Roroa Headquaters

11.00am Walk through the Ventnor Grove, and give thanks to the

ancestors in front of the plaque we offered to Te Roroa in

2013. Bring joss sticks.

11.30–12.45pm Meal at Te Roroa café.

12.45pm Leave to visit Tane Mahuta – oldest largest and majestic

kauri tree. If you feel old, stand beside this fella and you

will come away feeling youthful.

1.15pm Leave Signal Station Road

1.30pm Signal Station Road – where the SS Ventnor was last

sighted. Stand looking out to sea. At 10 o’clock 10 miles

out to sea is where the wreck site lies. To the right you see

the harbour where the life boats landed.

2.30pm Travel to Old Wharf Road, where the scene in front of you

will bring that very well known photograph alive. This is

where the survivors beached their life boats.

3.30pm Go to the Hokianga Museum, run by a group of volunteers.

They are making a huge effort to get on loan some

Chinese artefacts for this occasion. They also hold a

record of the research on the project to date. We have a

koha for them.

4.30pm Go to your accommodation….. Self cater for a quick evening

meal .

6.30pm Travel to Rawene. Go to No 1 Parnell Gallery, Rawene.

Wander around the gallery and look at the exquisite

photographs taken by Dr King Tong Ho- the story of what

happened when we fed the ‘hungry ghosts’ the first time

after 110 years.

Fund raiser – Ralph Hotere books (through the kind

generosity of Ron Sang) will be on sale $65.00

7.30pm An evening presentation with Wong Liu Shueng, Project leader

for the Chinese Historic Ventnor Group (now under NZCA

– National.) Plenty of time to ask questions, the more the

better.


Sunday 3rd May

7.00am Breakfast & check-out

8.00am Travel to Rawene Cemetery. We know that there are

bones buried there. Wander around and tell us where you

think they might be. Chinese Historic Group are planning to

have the area surveyed later this year.

9.00am To catch ferry and get takeaway coffee (pick up from gallery

walk onto ferry.)

9.30am The 9.30am ferry a must . Bring a nibble ie museli bar

etc… to eat on ferry or on way.

10.30am Matihetihe Marae – powhiri. Our groups will be led onto the

marae by Meng Foon.

11.30am Kaumatua, Peter Martin (Uncle Mingo) who will lead us up into

the urupa (cemetery) to the red gateway. Two years ago

we placed a brass plaque on the gateway, but it has

corroded badly, and is now unreadable. This plaque is

being replaced by a granite one. The Poon Fah will do the

unveiling.

12.30pm Cuppa tea in building next to marae, light snack. Any

baking etc can be shared here.

1.30pm Go to beach for the bai jey ceremony

Picnic on the beach where the ancestors bones were

washed ashore.

2.45pm Depart for Auckland. Maybe a short stop in Kawakawa

before you leave the Far North.

N Z C A Women’s Group Activities.

The first meeting for the year was on Sunday 8 February 2015, blueberry picking at Blueberry Country, 229 Central Road South, Ngatea. We were all laden with buckets of blue berries, and visions of blueberry muffins

.

Ngatea Water Gardens was next up. Unfortunately the website was not up to date, and there was no café for a picnic lunch. The walk at Ngatea Water Gardens was beautiful, and included a museum, housing over 11,000 beer, soft drinks and unusual cans; a gift shop with crafts and souvenirs; and home to some of NZ’s oldest turtles, birds, fish, peacocks and ducks; flowers, water lilies, fountains, waterfalls and hilarious signs. The trip home included the ever popular stop off for Pokeno ice cream and Bacon.

A BBQ at Cornwall Park was held on Sunday 22

March. Thank you to Myra and Jessie for the

great organisation, and for the preparation and

cooking on the day.


Our first indoor meeting for the year was Saturday

18th April 2015. Ann Chin, a successful writer, has

been on Television and spoken to several

organisations about her books, and life

experiences. Ann presented on her book, From

China to Borneo & Beyond. Ann gave an insight

of her life growing up in Borneo, traditions and her

family. Afternoon tea and raffles ended the day.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Annette Huang

was unable to present the Zengcheng Village talk

on May 16 2015 Meeting. This much looked

forward presentation will be rescheduled in the

next few months.

The May meeting started with a with cooking

demonstration by Jessie Edmonds, making Gow

Choi pancakes; May Young demonstrating

ribbons and bows; book swap and 2 tables of

mah-jong

The next meeting will be June 2015, with Nancy

Young presenting from Camera to Print.

July will be the annual Yum Char, with invited

guests from Hamilton Womens Group.

SAVOURY MUFFINS

(recipe makes 1 dozen)

2 onions chopped and lightly sautéed

2 garlic cloves

3 or 4 zucchini grated

3 carrots grated

3 rashers of bacon finely chopped

1 ½ cups of self-raising flour

¾ cup oil

6 eggs lightly beaten

1 ½ cups tasty grated cheese

2 tblsp oyster sauce

Mix together lightly. Bake 20 minutes in muffin

pans at 200°

Suggest fold baking paper into cups and line

the muffin pans with these as they do tend to

stick no matter how well you grease the pans!

NZCA Easter Sports and Cultural

Tournament report:

The Annual NZCA Easter Sports and Cultural tournament was held this year in the deep south in Dunedin hosted by the

Otago Southland Branch. It was pleasing to see that so many Aucklanders made the trek down to Dunedin with over 90 players

and supporters travelling.

The team was a good mix of families and open participants. Everyone that played over the weekend represented Auckland with

skill, grace and good sportsmanship. Over all it was a very successful tournament for Auckland winning the below grades;

TIniball, Miniball, Intermediate Miniball and Men U17 basketball.

NZ Invitational China National under 19 team report:

In April the Association had the pleasure in hosting the touring Men’s China under 19 Basketball team when they

visited Auckland for 2 games against an Auckland NBL development team. This tour was to help them prepare for the

Men’s Under 19 World Championship to be held in Greece in June this year.

To be able to watch these young world class athletes up close was an opportunity not to be missed as they played to

two sell-out crowds at the AUT North Shore Recreation Centre.

Also during this tour, NZCA brought together a group of Chinese New Zealand development players who had played at

the recent NZCA Easter Sports and Cultural tournament for the opportunity to train and scrimmage against the China

National under 19 team. Auckland was represented by Richard Liu, Devon Ahmu, Matt Loulanting and Theo Farrow.

The NZCA team also played the curtain raiser to the China versus Auckland games both games were won by the NZCA

Invitational Development team.

NZCA Auckland Inc Annual Golf Tournament 2015 This is the 12th year that this popular event has been held. 35 keen and eager golfers turned up at the Aviation Golf Club on Sunday 17th May, ready to enjoy a leisurely day at the golf course, as well as taking the opportunity to renew friendships and mingle with others in the wider golfing community. We were pleased to welcome some familiar faces, as well as the new players who played for the first time in our tournament. We hope that you will join us next year. Golf on the day, according to most players, was pretty average, but the course was in good condition. Weather was overcast and cloudy - fortunately the rain held off. The History of the New Zealand Chinese Association

Stone into Jade tells the story of one of New Zealand’s oldest Chinese

community organisations. In its early incarnations, the NZCA offered

kinship and a united voice for an often marginalised and fragile minority.

As the New Zealand Chinese evolved into a community with a sure sense of

place in the country’s growing diverse population, the NZCA has had to

adapt and change to reflect its current and future needs. Turning Stone

into Jade is the story of how a community founded by sojourners and

migrants has adapted to a new homeland, far from the place of their

ancestors’ birth.

Written by David Fung, this book comprises an extensive range of records

from the Association’s archives and other historical research,

supplemented with photos, illustrations and contributions from its thirteen

branches across the country.

10 years ago (August 2005) NZCA Cantonese Music

School emerged from a chance meeting with Lina

Liang at the NZCA Banana Conference in July of that

year (Lina was doing a Masters paper in Bilingual Ed.

– basing learning through the language of Music). I

had been in the field of education for many many years

and recognized this as a unique method for learning a

language. I saw this as an opportunity for our young

children (my grandchildren) to learn Cantonese in a

fun and un conventional way.

The NZCA Cantonese Music School started in August

2005.

Mission Statement:

“To foster the learning of the Chinese (Cantonese)

language as a second international language through a

biiingual programme utilising music and movement as

an effective teaching medium”.

Music and movement is a really dynamic and

entertaining way to stimulate children’s learning.

The best time for children to learn a language is

between the ages of three to seven.

What is the Programme???

Singing nursery rhymes in Cantonese (real easy for the

three year olds to learn), recognizing and learning

numbers and colours through song. Role play -

yumchar . All reinforced with a CD with over 20 songs

for parents to take home - Learning for life – “If you

don’t use it then you lose it”

From age five they can start recognizing the Chinese

characters to the songs and learn to read and write.

A very good base for the learning of mandarin at

College. “ A Head Start”. There is no difficulty

adjusting to the Mandarin language and there is no

difference in the written language. Chinese in Malaysia

can learn up to five languages/ dialects.

NZCA Auckland Youth Leadership Camp -

Thursday 10th December to

Sunday 13th December 2015

Following the highly successful Youth Leadership Camps in 2011 and 2013 - NZCA Auckland is hosting a third camp on 10-13 December 2015 at Camp Adair, Hunua. This is a great opportunity to support our high school members in Year 9 (Form 3) to Year 13 (Form 7). The camp offers a comprehensive leadership, cultural and team building experience for over 40 Chinese students from across our community, with the added energy and enthusiasm of Albert King (inspiration and leadership motivation consultant based in Singapore). There will be great interaction over the weekend with key speakers from a diverse cross section of leaders across our community, whilst alumni facilitators will motivate a versatile outdoor and cultural programme. The activities cover confidence courses, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese traditional dance, career booth rotations and much more to ensure an intensive and fulfilling programme for all participants.

The benefits will translate into the participants becoming more confident and capable young leaders within our community and beyond. The camp provides a stepping stone to our other NZCA leadership initiatives, being the Leadership and Development Conference (for ages 18 - 30) and the social business networking forum - Future Dragonz (http://www.futuredragonz.org.nz/index.html).

GOCK, Mr Moo Lock (Joe) For services to the horticulture industry Mr Joe Gock has been a market gardener since

the 1050s

Mr Gock was a pioneer in raising kumaras using

under-earth heating in modern hotbeds. He also

developed a disease-free strain of kumara ,now a

mainstay of the kumara industry known as

Owairaka Red.

In partnership with the Department of Scientific

and Industrial Research he developed a prototype

kumara curing shed, which reduced crop losses

from 50% to less than 1% allowing the seasonal

crop to be marketed all year round.

In the late 50s he successfully grew seedless

watermelons and to distinguish this he placed

stickers on individual fruit, now a common

practice and marketing tool in the industry. In the

1980s he bought and patented a mould for bushel

sized polystyrene boxes for packing and

transporting broccoli while keeping it fresh. These

polystyrene boxes are still in wide use today.

He has been a member of the Chinese

Commercial Growers Association for more than

60 years, and has mentored young Chinese

growers. He is also a member of the Dominion

Federation of New Zealand Chinese commercial

Growers.

Mr Gock was featured in the 2012 book ‘Sons of

the Soil: a history of Chinese Market Gardeners of

New Zealand’.

2 cups flour 25 cups water 2 tsps 1dashi seasoning 1/2 tsp soy sauce 1/2 small cabbage finely chopped 1 bch spring onions chopped 60 grms bacon cut small pieces Some prawns about 16 1. whisk tog. Flour, water,dashi & soy sauce until smooth 2.In a separate bowl beat 4 /6 eggs Add bacon, cabbage, bacon, prawns & spring onions 3.Add to batter , mix well & ladles mall amounts into hot pan , fry until bubbles appear & flip over.
