Portfolio VeneziaCamp 2010 - Arsenale in Venice, 1st-3rd July 2010

The second edition of VeneziaCamp will take place at the Arsenale in Venice

(the Historical Dockyard) from the 1st to the3rdJuly 2010: three days of sharing,

comparison and growth in order to promote the themes of innovation and

ethics for digital citizens.

At the Arsenale, place of age-old navigation, from galleys of yore to current wifi systems, it will be possible to see an innovative mix dedicated to the themes

of the net and to digital citizens, and how everyday life aspects (from social

networks to civil service, from the e-commerce to tourism, the latter in

particular is very important for the city of Venice) are faced in the net and with

the net. Saturday the 24th will be the day dedicated to bloggers, with the non-

conventional form of the BarCamp; there will be spaces dedicated to the most

active online communities and to the development of new applications, and

also Venetian children and teenagers with their own view for the future of their

city: Venice wants to be more and more active and protagonist of its

innovation.

Inside this “container” we provide a special mixture in order to host all the

protagonists of the web, all the people who deal with facilities - such as in firms - and it is also thought for those who are creative, such as writers,

Facebook programmers, iPhone widget creators, for politics and directors

who manage and promote territorial innovative actions.

The very first edition

“VeneziaCamp 2009, which took place from the 23rd to the 25th October 2009

suggested some innovations - digital citizenship, technological innovation,

sustainable tourism, innovation in the PAs, social medias and communication,

web occupations - but, in the end, we have found ourselves involved in the

development of iPhone applications, eating “Italian whole roasted pig” which

has been tagged with the QR-code, and involved in debates with primary and

secondary schools about the future of the city, trying to understand the role of

counterinformation in the Italian region of Abruzzo, imaging our Arsenale as some Italian Docklands and asking not to close the doors of the Arsenale

becase Facebook developers wanted to spend the night there.

In these 3 days it was 2000 of us, if numbers still matter.”

What is it?

The ProjectVenice is a traditionally open city, which has been influenced by many

populations and civilizations: it is a city that never stops and, thanks to what the Public Authority did and to the frequent visitors of the net about this area, it can

be considered as the first city that got aware of the creation of the digital

citizens’ new status. The citizens do not want to be passive subjects but want

to play an active part in the society.

Digital Technology has revolutionized Italians’ way to get informed. The use of

Internet and satellite tv is growing more and more. Being well informed about

public interest matters means to play and active part in the life of a community.

This is what it means to be a citizen. Today, the connection between Internet

and information (and politics) awakens interest and attention more than it did in

the past.

We have decided to let Venice become a great laboratory for innovation, and to

give the people of the net the opportunity to find their ideal place. “The net is a real revolution: I think that the evolution of the broadband can be compared to

the effects of the steam revolution in the nineteenth century”, says Michele

Vianello, one of the promoters of the event and manager of the Vega

Technological Parc, “and the Arsenale, wired with optical fibres for the people of the net, is the ideal place where to start new trips: a great chance to inaugurate a new world”.

This is the reason why Venice, thanks to its own cosmopolitan mentality, may

become famous for innovation.

The Themes

As the first edition, VeneziaCamp 2010 will develope six different themes, with a single leitmotif given by the innovative vision of the net, the so called 2.0 web.

Today Internet is a well-established and universally recognized tool, but the approach to the “net” represents a real challenge for Economy, Society, Civil Service, Marketing and Tourism in the future. And if social networks represent the basis for everyday life for all those who surf the net habitually, all the people who work

with those networks are already thinking about Innovation Technology, not just Information Technology. Of all this and much more we will talk about in the edition of

2010.

The BarCamp will take place on the 3rd July: for further information see the website http://barcamp.org/veneziacamp2010

The Location

The event about digital innovation, organized with the Municipality of Venice,

takes place in the very first factory of the world, the “Tese” of the Arsenale, the most fascinatine place of the city. The places that saw the golden age of

the Serenissima now represent the new workshop for innovation: from pitch

to the net, from the galleys to the web, the Arsenale represents again a new

place dedicated to “navigation”: 300 sm divided into three areas with stalls,

community areas, convention rooms and clusters. The whole area of the

Arsenale is covered by a wifi net provided by the Municipality of Venice which,

from the 3rd July 2009, is the first digital city in Italy.

Innovation and digital citizenship, a place where the “people of

the net” can meet: during these three days, a lot of conventions have taken place here, meeting and seminars that illustrated e-

democracy world best practice, PA communication strategies,

shared vision in order to promote the modernization of digital PA.

Playful moments could not be missing just to discover Venice

with the digital WhaiWhai. The “QR-Code tagged whole roasted

pig” has represented a very important moment in the twinning

with the region of Abruzzo characterized by innovation after the

last earthquake.

A great event featuring some of the most active Italian bloggers together with journalists such as Luca De Biase, edtor of Nova24, and web marketing experts such as David Weinberger, co-author of the Cluetrain Manifesto, who gave a speech about Internet and Wikipedia evolution and their future expectations on the last day of VeneziaCamp.

There has also been an “institutional” moment, when Marc Charron, TripAdvisor Europe Managing Director, one of the biggest travel communities, gave the Mayor of Venice Massimo Cacciari the prize “Traveller friendly City”. This prize gives Venice credit for being the first Italian internet tourist - friendly city.

Even Digital Media Metadistrict firms, all the politics who ride social media, creative writers, the followers of the Digital Ethics Paper and the protagonists of the 40xVenezia and civil service net, innovators who are ready to spread the 2.0 Managing Manifesto.

Children as well took part in a special contest suggested by VeneziaCamp. Carlo Massarini presented the Next City Life: “Venice 2020: imaging living in my city”.

There was a special area at the Communities’ disposal

dedicated to meetings and to the exchange of ideas and thoughts about the theme of the event.

All the users could take advantage of a powered station for three

days in order to surf the net. The area, controlled by the security

staff, was available only for registered members who had to

mark their own tools to protect their own things.

8 Communities took part in VeneziaCamp:

• Abruzzo@Venezia

• Associazioni Venezia

• Webprofession.it

• Womentech

• Tribù Digitali Veneziane

• Filemaker

The day of Saturday focused on the traditional BarCamp, which is an event

dedicated to the “net dwellers”.

The BarCamp can be considered as a un-lecture created by the

contributors. It arises from people’s wish to share and learn in a

free open space: there is no audience and everyone can take part in the

event presenting a project, talking about ideas, debating or helping

organizers.

That was not a regular lecture with a specific theme and an outline of

events and topics, but a place where people can express and share

their thoughts and their knowledge.

Anyone can “teach”, suggest a topic or talk to people, aiming to promote

free thinking, curiosity, the popularization of all the themes linked to the

Web. There is a track, in our case it was the “digital culture”, and spaces

available to be used to propose a topic and discuss it.

The BarCamp hosted more than 200 users previously logged through the

wiki (http://barcamp.org/veneziacamp2009 )
