General Cleaning Vocational English Language Training
Module 1
Module Duration: 2 hours (4:00-6:00, Monday)
Module Description: This day includes giving a general overview of the vocational program,
administering a pre-test, and teaching 10 basic vocabulary words with
accompanying activities.
Module Goals:
To introduce the participants to the VELT program.
To assess the participants pre-course English skills with a pretest.
Have students successfully sign in on their “replica timecard.”
Teach the following words:
o Clean
o Dirty
o Broom
o Dust Pan
o Vacuum
o Mop
Review the words through classroom activities
Send students home with vocabulary list and activity handouts to study

Introductions
(10 Min) Classroom and Interpreter Orientation
o Orientate students with appropriate
interpreter
o Allow interpreter time to make an
introduction and to get to know their
students
Introduce yourself
Ask for student introductions
o Ask them to say their name, where they’re
from, how long they’ve been here and past
employment (say in English).
ACTIVITY:
Have students come to the front of
the class and introduce themselves.

Overview of the VELT Training Program and its
objectives
Stephen or Waleed will do this.
Fill out
timesheet
(10 Min.)
Have students fill out their sign-in/time sheet
with the help of the translator.
Tell them that it is like a timesheet that they
will be required to fill out for their employer.
Make sure each student has done the first
week correctly.
Show them where in the classroom they can
find the time and date (you can write it for
them on the board)

Pre-test
(15 Min.) Explain the purpose of the pre-test. Let them
know it might be hard and they aren’t expected to
know these things already (that is the purpose of
the course!)
Administer pre-test and help as needed
Walk around and help students to understand
the questions
If students are unable to write the answer to a
given question, give them the opportunity to say
the answer to you, then you can write it for them
and give them credit.

Hand out vocab sheet, explain that they should
take notes.
Begin the PowerPoint instruction on Clean vs.
Dirty.

(10 Min)
Do a hands-on activity/demonstration that
involves making a mess and tidying up in front of
the class.
PREPARE THIS ACTIVITY BEFORE CLASS
STARTS
Ask someone to come “clean the
table/board/floor.”
ACTIVITY:
Cover the whiteboard in
markings of all different
colors, take pre-ripped
pieces of paper and sprinkle
them all over the floor, lay
other props out in a mess.
Ask the students if this area
looks clean or dirty.
See if any of the students
will come clean-up the area.
If not, show them how to
make it clean by erasing the
whiteboard, sweeping the
pieces of paper into a
dustpan and organizing the
props.

OPTIONAL
Play the clean the room video (whole video)
Emphasize that the worker is making the dirty
room clean.

Use PowerPoint to go through
different slides, ask students to raise
their hand if they think it is
dirty/clean then go over the right
answer.

BREAK
(10 Min) Give the class a 10 minute break
Make sure that they sign out on their timesheet
Make sure that they also sign back in.

Tell them they only have to learn four more
words today.
See if anyone can recall the first two words we
have learned.
Begin cleaning tools vocabulary review on the
PowerPoint

DEMONSTATIONS: When
teaching each word show them how
to use the item if the prop is
available.
For example: Grab the vacuum, plug
it in, and move it around the area.

Pause the video to highlight different tools being
used.

Review with flashcards
Have the students work in groups to test each
other.
DEMONSTRATION - Show them
how to lay all of the cards down
with picture up and to turn it over
and read and say aloud the word.

Show the activity titled Cleaning Tools Matching
Game on the PowerPoint
Give them the handout and see if they remember
any of the words.
Then go over the right answers one by one asking
volunteers to come point to the right object if they
know it.
At the end, show them the slides that show the
correct matches and ask them to change their own
handout to reflect the right answers to they can
study them on their own at home.
If available give them different colored pencils to
write the correct answers with.

to match the word to the
picture on their own without
the help of the interpreter.

Be creative – bring in your own wrap-up activity.
Have students act out how to use different props
from the lesson.
o Example: Tell a student to imitate
“washing the floor with the mop” or
“sweeping with the broom.”

Follow up:
Report the following to Stephen or Waleed
o Any students that really struggle to understand concepts or are very slow learners.
o Anyone that detracts from the class or has a bad attitude.
o Anyone that struggles with personal hygiene.

module.
