Hari om!

There is one thing called Control of Mind, and the other a state of No Mind. Thefirst one is a state of mind where there are various thoughts flowing along. Some good, some not so good, sometimes peacefully and at other times force-fully. The scene is like watching a river in its different locales, but the flow goeson & on. Sleep is the only times when such a mind is at ease, and that alsobecause it is tired. All such people do realize the importance of a quiet & peacefulmind, and for this all what they can think of is the 'control of mind'. Everythought has an agenda, a compulsion of having to pay attention to something, and behind it all a seeker who has things to fulfill. A seeker who is obviouslylimited and also helpless, because the fellow has no control on what is goingon, and has no freedom too of ignoring the whole scene. It is this flood, whichis at times even like a tsunami which necessitates all kinds of pressures, es-capes or temporary respite through pleaures. Intoxicants too are a commonbut cheap means to handle a disturbed & tired mind. All religions try to handlesuch minds of their followers. Love, devotion, pranayama, absorbtion, austeri-ties, strict regulations & discipline, thoughtlessness etc are advised by differ-ent sects as per their understanding and traditions. Here the basic premise isthat the thoughts shall come, and we just need the art & science of handlingand controlling them. They cant dream of a person who has no such problem,it rather appears so unnatural to them that there are people whose mind iseffortlessly quiet. Inspite of all their knowledge, regular sadhanas or austeri-ties, all such people are basically ignorant people.

Vedanta describes a man of knowledge as someone whose mind is effort-lessly and naturally quiet and at peace. This is what is called a state of 'NoMind'. Such a mind does not indicate the absence of our capacity to think orfeel, in fact it was their high degree of understanding of the mind and the selfthat they are what they are. They are the enlightened ones. They have re-solved all compulsions and seekings, because they now know the truth of lifevery nicely. It is this deep understanding of life which has resolved all the prob-lems of the mind, and is therefore at effortless peace. Bhagwat Gita says thata Sthitha Pragnya is one who revels 'in his self' and is so contented in himselfthat effortlessly there are no thoughts & desires in the mind. Their quititudeand fulfillment is not a product of their efforts, but was their natural state. Tothink is a deliberate yet now a loving effort, and self-contentment is their natu-ral state. They see the world without the specs of thoughts, and thus they aloneknow how blessed is the human existence and life. They are truly healthy andnormal people. Such is the blessing of knowledge and awakening. .

Atma Bodha - Shloka 19

Vyapriteshu indriyeshu atman:A lot of activities like eating, hearing,

smelling, sleeping, seeing, touching, working

with the hands, running, feeling, thinking etc. are

constantly taking place in the life of an individual.

These activities are experienced at the level of

various faculties, the sense organs, the organs

of action, the mind and the intellect. All such ac-

tivities are experienced by these various facul-

ties and for these faculties and the source of

power to enliven these faculties is the atman or

the form of Supreme Consciousess which re-

flects through these activities. Infact it is only

with the Supreme as the substratum that all our

levels of existence viz. the sense organs etc

have an existence, identity, and the pottential to

respond and experience. Without this divine

power no existence would be ever possibe. Yet

the purport of discussion in this sloka is that even

though basically our enitre manifestation and ex-

pression of life is charged by the Supreme Brah-

man yet it is neither the doer of any activity nor

the enjoyer of any experience. It as though ap-

pears to be performing these various activities.

As these instruments indulge and experience the

world one comes to miscomprehend that the Self

is the doer and the enjoyer. As also because of

lack of awareness of the truth of the Real Self

Vedanta Sandesh - June 2010

The Self is an uninvolved witness of all the activities that take place at the level of our sense

organs, pranas, mind and intellect. It is totally unaffected by all the drama that goes on in this

world. Yet, whose mere presence activates all our faculties. This was explained in the previous

sloka by an example of a king who is a witness to all the courtroom drama. But this fact today is

against our direct experience. Today we experience that I am the doer and enjoyer. What is the

reason for this misconception? How then can I see the Self as totally detached uninvolved sub-

stratum of all existence and its play. To explain this herefrom this this sloka is described the

Adhyasa or superimposition of the Anatma on the Atma and the atma on the anatma by the indi-

vidual jiva due to his ignorance.

Atma is Changeless, Change is just Imposed

Vyaapriteshu indriyeshu aatma vyaapari iva avivekinamDrishyate abhreshu dhavatsu dhavanniv yatha shashi

Vyaapriteshu indriyeshu: while the enses are working; atma: the atman; Vyaapari iva: like the

worker; avivekinam: to the non-discriminating; drishyate: appears; abhreshu dhavatsu: as the

clouds move; Dhavanniv: As if moving or running; Yatha shashi: like the moon;

The Atman appears to be working to the non-discriminating mind while the senses

alone are working. Just as the moon appears to be running when in fact the clouds are

moving.

19

Page 5: Vedanta Sandesh - June 2010

Page # 5

one comes to see the body, mind and intellect

as the Self alone. The Acharya thus goes on to

say that it is only to the ignorant that the Atman

appears to be the doer and enjoyer.

Vyapari iva avivekinam:It is only to the unwise and untutored who

has not studied the scriptures at the Holy Feet

of a Guru and hence who has not discriminated

between the Atman and the non-Atman that the

atman appears to be active as performing or

even empowering the faculties to perform as a

doer and experiencing all the various activities

at the level of the body, mind and intellect as an

enjoyer. This misapprehenshion is called as su-

perimposition where the dharma or nature of the

Atman is superimposed on the anatman and that

of the Anatman on the Atman. Here we are su-

perimposing the sense of doership and

enjpyership of the sense organs, the organs of

action and the mind and intellect on the Self.

The Self is but an involved witness to all that is

happening at the level of the indiviual body. Infact

even when it is said that the Atman is the su-

preme source or life energy empowering all our

sense organs etc, even in that case the Self is

not the doer as it does not empower or enlighten

the body, mind and intellect with the sense of

doing something but it is only with its mere pres-

ence that everything gets activated. It is just

reveling in its nature and everything gets enliv-

ened. If one had to say to the fire, Thankyou fire

for cooking my food for me, the fire would say, “I

am not doing anything deliberately, I am just rev-

elling in my nature of heat, anything that comes

in my contact will be heated up without me de-

liberately doing anything. So too the Atman evels

in its own glory of pure existence, conscious-

ness and bliss. It does not carry any ego of bring-

ing about existence, enlivening it or making it

joyous. Seeing the Atman as the doer is impos-

ing the qualities of the Anatman. This is ex-

plained by the Acharya with a nice example.

Drishyate Abhreshu Dhavatsu...One often experiences two very common

illusions as we walk on a street on a moonlit

night. One is that the moon is as though cov-

ered by the clouds and second, the clouds are

moving fast in the direction of the wind. If one

were to analyse this situation one would realise

the fallacies of such a perception. Firstly clouds

which are much smaller in size and are at a great

distance fom the moo cannot cover the moon.

The truth then is that the clouds are covering

our vision and do not have the capacity to cover

a moon which is much greater in size than the

clouds. Even then the seer says, Look the clouds

have covered the moon. Secondly, often not only

children but grown ups too feel that as if the

moon is walking with them fast - Dhavanniv

yatha shashi, whereas the truth is that it is not

the moon but the clouds which are moving fast.In this manner when the Self is recognied by

identifying with the activities of the body, mind

and intellect then it as though appears that the

Supreme Self is the doer. Not only this all the

changes, all the emotions all the limitations that

take place at the level of these bodies one comes

to say that I am changing, I am growing old, I

am ying, I am happy, so on and so forth. As long

as one contiues to impose the activities and

liitations of the BMI on the Real Self so long one

will continue to suffer the consequences of

doership and enjoyership. Hence the implica-

tion in the sloka under discussion is to be able

to Discrimnate between the Atman and Anatma

and see the Atma as the uninvolved witness of

all our faculties.

This Self is never born, nor does It die. It did not spring from anything, nor

did anything spring from It. This Ancient One is unborn, eternal, everlasting.

It is not slain even though the body is slain. - Kathopanishad

Vedanta Sandesh - June 2010

One day I decided to quit...I quit my job, my relationship, my spiritu-

ality... I wanted to quit my life.I went to the woods to have one last talk with

God.“God”, I asked, “Can you give me one good reason not to quit?” His

answer surprised me...“Look around”, He said. “Do you see the fern and

the bamboo?” “Yes”, I replied. “When I planted the fern and the bamboo

seeds, I took very good care of them.I gave them light.I gave them water.

The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its brilliant green covered the floor.

Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo.

In the second year the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again,

nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. He

said. “In year three there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I

would not quit. In year four, again, there was nothing from the bamboo

seed. I would not quit.” He said. “Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged

from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and

insignificant...But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet

tall.It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong

and gave it what it needed to suvive. I would not give any of my creations a

challenge it could not handle.” He asked me. “Did you know, my child, that

all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing

roots”. “I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you.” “Don’t

compare yourself to others.” He said. “The bamboo had a different purpose

than the fern. Yet they both make the forest beautiful.” “Your time will come”,

God said to me. “You will rise high” “How high should I rise?” I asked. “How

high will the bamboo rise?” He asked in return. “As high as it can?” I ques-

tioned. “Yes.” He said, “Give me glory by rising as high as you can.” I left

the forest and brought back this story. I hope these words can help you see

that God will never give up on you. Never, Never, Never Give up. For the

Prayer is not an option but an opportunity. Don’t tell the God how big the

problem is, Tell the problem how Great the God is!

Don’t Give Up

Sanyas & Viraja Homa

The unique-

ness of human birth is

in having the capacity

of extremely fine and

subtle 'Self-

Consciousness'. The

astounding capacity

of this subjective

awareness is the

singularly most

important factor which

makes or mars our

life.

- Poojya Guruji

Hari Om.

We are happy that my Visa to visit Russia has been got, and soon I will be visiting

Russia. Further to our earlier discussion I shall initiate you into Sanyas Ashram now. I

will briefly tell you the basics of this ceremony.

In this final initiation the most important component is the Viraja Homa. This is a ritual

part of the ceremony which physicalizes the resolve & the fundamental change. The

phase before Sanyas basically permits and in fact focusses on various noble, selfless

and important things which we need 'to do' with a dedicated resolve & sense of

responsibility, in other words things which need change, purification etc. So while we do

study the limitations of Karma and its dynamics, we also appreciate the positive side of

Karma. So helping the society/family/disciples with an imposed sense of responsibility

and love, expressing the notion that a particular kind of situation alone is an ideal

prescription for happiness, formation of some institution & organization for various sewa,

inculcating some qualities in mind etc., are taken up with dedicated resolve - in fact as

an injuction of the scriptures themself. So we appreciate the role of our vyavaharic satta,

and are in fact motivated by the scriptures to give due importance to them - till a certain

time, and for a particular objective.

Now when we enter the Sanyas Ashram, the fundamental change is to completely stop

all such efforts to change anything whatsoever. Now the priority is just to accept

everything as they are and know the truth of everything. It is a conscious living at a level

which transcends the doer, but is a deliberate knower. So there are no good or bad work

- it is just no work whatsoever. We see things 'happening', by the inherent motivations,

aspirations and insecurities of all. A state of mind which neither accepts or rejects

anyone, which is neither for or against anyone, which is not related to any family, society

or even country. All such fragmentations & superimpostions are negated. We just 'see'

the truth of everything that is, whether anything outside, or in our mind. A non-reacting

mind which just studies everything and realzes its truth. This is the change which this

homa physicalizes. A true, sincere, deep-rooted, uncompromising, once for all, transition

from Karma to Gyana. Things are just happeneing, and we are just an uninvolved

witness of all the 'happenings' all over, who is intensely interested to know the truth of

everything, truth not only as the timeless thing, but also as a process of all what is

happening. That is Sanyas, and there is yet another change in name & form, and like

the homa, it also affirms that fundamental change, which is a message to not only me

but also to others around.

This ceremony is always somewhere near a river. We give away our earlier identity and

all its associated things to it, and come out fresh & new. As a part of this ritual we take a

dip in water, drop our old clothes, and alongwith it our old identity and level of existence;

don the new ones given by our guru thereafter. This dip is at the twilight time, and a real

new day starts for us thereafter. I hope there is some place on the banks of Volga to

take such a dip etc.

uIn India the last three months of summer, were a period of austerity for

mother earth, for human beings, plants, trees, animals, the rich and the poor, all

alike. This period of austerity invokes the best of forbearance and activity to gather

oneself together and go through this phase of parched throats, bathing perspira-

tion, furnace like hot airs and scorching heat. Cause we all know that in God’s

creation and order the first phase is the first step to the next phase. In the Gita

Lord Krishna says ‘yagyat bhavati parjanyah i.e. from sacrifice or offerings we get

rains.’ The whole activity of getting blessed with the rains is the prasad of a great

yagna going on in nature. The sun burns in its glory to evaporate the water from

the seas and oceans to form clouds, the mother earth bears with the blanket of

heat and so do all living beings, plants and animals, the winds then give the right

direction to the clouds that are formed. And at the end of this penance, this

phase of hot weather brings with it the rains, rains that are showers of life and

prosperity and come with it rainbows of happines and joy. This is the cosmic yagna

in nature wherein the sun, the seas, the clouds, the winds all of them make thier

offerings to bring about rainfall.

Sri Krishna says that performing our actions too is like making an offering

in the universal cosmic yagna. As human beings we are part of the big cosmic

body of the universe and the cosmic family of all beings from the inert beings to

the celestial devatas. The beauty of God’s creation is that no being lives in isola-

tion. We all have seen and unseen connections with each other and so not only

all of us have a role to play for the welfare of each other but our actions inevitably

influnece the lives and welfare of all around us. As a human being we have the

previlege, freedom and pottential of performing actions. It is our freedom to either

choose to perform actions for our selfish desires or to perform them selflessly for

the welfare of one and all. Actions which are selfless, dynamic, creative, inspiring

and loving actions are actions performed with an attitude of yagna. Lord Krishna

in his divine song inspires man to perform actions with such a spirit of yagnas,

where we live and perform by connecting ourselves to the totality. Such pious and

god-centric actions are our offerings to the various devatas who are constantly

blessing us with various things in life. This spirit of yagna in the field of action

brings about the rains of prosperity, mental peace, happiness and serenity and

the well-being of one and all.

So, as we eagerly await and welcome the monsoons this year let us incul-

cate this spirit of yagna and let all human beings, plants, animals, nature, mother

earth all bath in the rain showers of holistic prosperity. Let us pray for a good

monsoon and welcome the earthly fragrance of the first rains, the joyous chirping

of the birds, the refreshing smile of flowers, plants and trees, the smile of life on

the faces of the farmers and prosperous crops. May this monsoon too be a beau-

tiful abhisheka on Shiva lingums and be an inspiration for all spiritual aspirants

and sadhus to spend time in devotion and knowledge.

In whom longing for the Beloved hath taken abode,

Every moment his body becometh feeble and enervated.

A stream of tears constantly flows from his eyes;

The pangs of pain ceaselessly smart his body and mind.

Like rivers in Sawan and Bhadon, overflows the stream of my love.

Day and night I long for Him and tears fall like incessant rain.

The pain for my Beloved increasingly penetrates my being every moment;

My attention can be transfixed on nought but him,

Even as the moon bird never gets satiated by looking at the moon.

Dark clouds gather and burst with thunder, and lightning dazzles the eyes.

The peacock crows in delight and the rain bird sings his longing.

I yearn for thee evermore, my body keeps wasting away in anguish.

When I listen to the Sound, I lose my patience and I write to my Beloved.

With mind and soul as my couriers, I send my message to His inaccessible abode.

When I hear the tidings of His well-being,

My heart is filled with love and delight.

Ever since this yearning for the Lord has taken hold of me,

I have severed all connections with the world.

Story of Mahakala

Mahakaleshwar is a Jyotirlinga and is at Ujjain or Avanti. The

city of Avanti is on the banks of the river Kshipra (Shipra). There is a

small story behind this temple. A brahmana named Vedapriya used to

live in the city of Avanti. He used to worship Shiva everyday and he

had brought up his four sons to do the same. These sons were named

Devapriya, Priyamedha, Suvrita and Suvrata. Not very far away, on a

hill named Ratnamala, there used to live an asura named Dushana.

Dushana was evil, he could not stand the idea of the Vedas being read

and the religion prescribed in them followed. He went about destroy-

ing this righteous religon wherever he could. Dushana got to know

that in the city of Avanti there lived four brahmanas who followed the

righteous religion and worshipped Shiva. These were the four sons of

Vedapriya, who were religiously following the preceepts of their noble

father who was then no more.

Dushana and his cohorts came and attacked the city of Avanti.

They threatened to kill the four brahmanas, but the brothers were not

at all perturbed. They continued to pray to Shiva. They bowed in obei-

sance before the linga. Suddenly a tremendous sound was heard and

a pit appeared in the ground in front of the linga. Shiva himself ap-

peared in this pit in a fiery & effulgent form, and Dushana was immedi-

ately burnt into ashes. Lord Shiva put all of Dushana’s soldiers to flight

never to come back again on that side. The four brothers requested

Lord Shiva that he may kindly be present at this place of his divine and

effulgent manifestation to bless all righteous devotees and for the noble

cause of Dharma - and Shiva agreed. This is the place that is now

known as Mahakala, and that particular manifestation of Lord Shiva is

known as Bhagwan Mahakaleshwar.

Gita Gyana Yagna, Mumbai:

A Gita Gyana Yagna by Poojya Guruji Sri Swami Atmanandaji was

organized at Bandra Hindu Association, Mumbai from 10th to 16th May 2010.

Poojya Guruji conducted discourses on Gita Chapter 2 and Upadesha Saaram

of Bhagwan Sri Ramana Maharshi.

Gita Chap 2, the Sankhya Yoga marks the begining of the message of

Gita by Bhagwan Sri Krishna to Arjuna. It features the significant turning

point of Arjuna’s surrender as a disciple, showing ignrance as the main cause

of grief, role of karma in preparing our mind for Self- knowledge and the most

important and famous description of a Man of Perfection, the Sthita Pragnya.

Upadesh Saaram is also a popular prakaran granth which explains

the blessings and limitations of various sadhanas and that ultimately knowl-

edge alone brings about liberation.

Gita Gyana Yagna, Ahmedabad:

A Gita Gyana Yagna by Poojya Swamini Amitanandaji was organized

at Sri Ramkrishna Kendra, Maninagar, Ahmedabad from 11th to 17th May.

The subject matter of Gyana Yagna were Gita Chapter 1, and 1st Chapter of

Kathopanishad.

This year for the first time the Gyana Yagnas at various places,

Mumbai, Lucknow, Dehradun, UK, Ahmedabad, all dealt with the first chap-

ter of the Gta. Often taken lightly this chapter diagnosis the exact problem of

Ajuna. It is highly important to understand the problem of Arjuna and see its

universal and timeless connection to man. Then alone we can identify with

the message of the Gita. A good doctor also never jumps into the treatment

of any patient till he has properly diagnosed the ailment of his patients.

Sankaracharya Jayanti, Indore:

On 18th May 2010 was the Adi Sankaracharya Jayanti, the birthday

of Bhagwan Bhashyakara Bhagwatpada Sri Adi Sankaracharya, one of the

greatest teachers of Vedanta and Sanatan Dharma.

There were special celebrations at Vedanta Ashram, Indore on this

pious day. One program was at the Sankaracharya Gate, and the other was

at the Ashram. Adi Shankaracharya Idol was seated on top of the Gate a

few years back by Param Pujya Guruji. Shankaracharya dwar is one of the

grand gates of the Sudama Nagar Colony and aso makes it the most suit-

able entry towards Vedanta Ashram. Various devotees gathered at the

Sankaracharya Gate at around 9.30 AM, the place was cleaned and Poojya

Guruji performed the puja. After Aarti there was prasad.

Sankaracharya Jayanti, Indore:

After the puja at the Shankaracharya Gate all the devotees gathered

at the Ashram where we all chanted the Totakashtakam and Guru Stotram.

Poojya Guruji then blessed all of us with a short discourse on the greatness

of the great Acharya. Sankara traveled to various holy places in India giving

discourses and also composing his commentaries in the meantime. Sankara

wrote commentaries on Badarayana's Brahma Sutras, the various

Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. In addition to these, Sankara wrote

independent treatises called Prakarana Granthas, including the Upadesha

Sahasri, Vivekachoodamani, Atma-bodha, etc. He also sought to debate

with other schools of thought and the philosophical victory gained by tat

brought about the revival of Hinduism. After that we had the arti and every-

one had prasad of the famous Indori Poha after that.

Visit to Hare Krishna Mandir, Indore:

On 2nd May, Poojya Guruji and Poojya Swamini Amitaandaji visited

Hare Krishna Temple on the outskirts of Indore with Dr and Mrs Subhash

Garg, the well-known Dentist of the city. Basically it was a fun ride in the

newly acquired Tata Nano Car of Dr Garg.

The small but spacious car, which has created a new segment in the

car market, and is the worlds cheapest car, opening the door for various

people to own a car. The best thing about the car is the magnanimous moti-

vation of its Chairman Mr Ratan Tata, who created an engineering wonder

by presenting car in this range. P.Guruji was impressed by the car. They all

drove to the Hare Krishna Mandir, where the evening Aarti had just started.

After the joyous Aarti, they all took praasad there itself.

Sankaracharya Jayanti, Mumbai & Ahmedabad:

Sri Adi Sankaracharya Jayanti, was also celebrated in the presence

of Poojya Swaminiji at the residence of Sh Dinesh Chandra Pathakji, who

has an idol of Bhagwan Sri Afi Sankaracharya at his home. Devotees gath-

ered at his residence and the puja was conducted amidst chnting of stotras

& bhajans.

At Mumbai also, the Vedanta Mission members gathered at the Con-

ference Hall of Elite Builders nd offered their respects to the great Acharya

by chanting stotras aand singing Bhajans. The members regularly study

Gita, Upnishads and also various Prakarana Granthas in their regular Gyan

Yagns, followed by their manan in SStudy Groups.
