Family Adventures and Memory-making TimesDude ranch vacations are popular because families can spend time together without distractions. A ranch vacation can be a time to get back to the basics and just enjoy spending time together as a family.

Roundup your family to try these fun family activities to spend time together at your own ranch! You can do some of these things without even leaving home.

Sidewalk Chalk FunA fun family activity can include a bucket of sidewalk chalk, a driveway or sidewalk, and a pretty summer day. While girls might like drawing a hopscotch game and having someone to play it with them, boys will certainly enjoy drawing a western town, creating a four-square game grid, or designing an obstacle course to ride a bicycle or skateboard through.

Kids also might enjoy tracing the shadows of other family members or drawing head shots of each family member. Younger children might find it a good opportunity to practice writing the alphabet, numbers, or drawing shapes.

As a family, use sidewalk chalk to draw a mural or play oversized games of tick-tack-toe. Create dot-to-dot illustrations to form a picture. Write a poem or rhyme together with sidewalk chalk. In VBS, kids learned about branding. Maybe your family could create your own family brand illustrated in sidewalk chalk.

Bandanna WranglingTake turns tossing a bandanna up in the air and asking other family members to catch it before it hits the ground. To make the game more challenging for older “wranglers,” call out specific body parts to try catching the bandanna. You might say “Catch it with your arm” or leg, stomach, foot, elbow, finger, head, and so forth.

Horseshoes You Make and PlayMake this horseshoe game with your family, and then play it together. Create a horseshoe pattern that is 8 inches long and 7 inches wide from a piece of cardboard. Use the pattern to trace four horseshoes on a one-inch thick foam sheet. Also, draw two 12-inch circles on a foam sheet. In the middle of each circle, cut a tiny slit to insert an unsharpened pencil or small dowel rod as the horseshoe post. Use a little tape if necessary to sturdy the post.

Allow kids to decorate the horseshoes and post bases if they would like. Place the two horseshoe posts six feet apart. Ask a family member to stand at one post and throw two horseshoes to the opposite post. Family members can take turns throwing the horseshoes.

Three points are scored when you get a ringer (horseshoe around the post), two points for a leaner (horseshoe touching the post), and one point for the person closest to the horseshoe post if no one is touching the post. You can play as individuals or as teams.

Family Cooking Cowboy-stylePlan a night to sit around the campfire with your family. It is a great time to share family memories, play games, and cook meals together. Consider these two easy ways to cook together over a campfire.

Campfire PizzaSet ready-made pizza crusts on top of sheets of aluminum foil. Place a layer of pizza sauce on the crust and then add your family’s favorite pizza toppings and cheese. Place the foil sheets on a grilling rack over a campfire. Leave the pizzas over the fire until the cheese melts. The pizza will taste like an oven-roasted pizza.

Campfire TreatWet a longer dowel rod to use as a roasting stick. Shape a biscuit from refrigerated biscuit dough around the rod. Cook the dough over a campfire until it is golden brown and easily slides off the rod, turning it often so it will not burn. Then fill the opening with ready-to-serve pudding or pie-filling. It makes a great snack for your family.
