All of us, in our lifetime, will experience special moments of ex-citement, joy, satisfaction or contentment that can readily be described as “moment of happiness.” Such moments might be a long awaited victory over a long-time rival …or the winning of a championship. It might be receiving a special award for a job well done …or that moment might simply be watching a glorious sunset at the end of a satisfying day with friends. Moments like these should not go unnoticed or unappreciated. If you retain these memories you will most assuredly overcome any of the “unhappy moments” that we all experience. Over the past 50 years, I have been blessed with an amazing number of “mo-ments of happiness.” I have vivid memories of Rose Bowls …hockey championships …Final Fours …great half-time shows …thrilling performances. This past season alone …a 700-piece Alumni Band performed a “double-headed” run-on in Camp Randall …there was a dazzling fireworks display at Union South to commemorate the final game of the season …the “On Wisconsin Finale” was a “moment” I will never forget, nor is the ovation the Band received at the Pinstripe Bowl in historic Yankee Stadium.

Tonight it is our hope to provide everyone who is in the Kohl Center: the Band …the alumni …the stage crew …our friends, and each member of the audience (plus me!) with some “moments of happiness” that forever are part of your personal “treasures.” For the past five decades I have had the unbelievable pleasure of working with some of the most dedicated, determined, ambitious, intense young men and women in our state and my gratitude will remain forever. These people are truly the “Spirit of Wisconsin.” They made the “moments of happiness.” May that spirit never waiver! But …for tonight …

I’ll see you real soon and ON WISCONSIN!!!

— Enjoy the show!

Kohl Center ClassicsFor over 20 years the Kohl Center has been regarded as one of the premier venues in the country for basketball …hockey …musical productions …fanatical fans …great fun …and the WISCONSIN BAND! At times the intensity can seem overwhelming and then “ramps up” when the Badger musicians perform such favorites as Lionel Richie’s All NightLong or the ever popular Rock and Roll #2 and maybe a tuba specialty could add to the excitement …(or not!).

Jersey BoysThe Broadway smash hit, JERSEY BOYS has, since its open-ing, been breaking attendance records all over the world and was recently reimagined in a film by Clint Eastwood. JERSEY BOYS is the story of Franki Valli and The Four Seasons …four blue-collar kids who became one of popular music’s greatest success stories. This group dominated the music scene for years and offered America’s greatest challenge to the “British Invasion.” The Wisconsin Band offers a few of the distinctive songs that propelled the Four Seasons to the top of the charts: December, 1963 (Oh What a Night!) …Sherry …Walk Like a Man …Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You …Stay …Let’s Hang On.

The Music Man In 1957 a charming story by Meredith Willson served as the basis for one of America’s best-loved musicals …THE MUSIC MAN. Willson, a former piccolo player for the legendary John Philip Sousa called upon his background in bands, in music history, and composition to construct a production that was a captivating setting of a culture before world wars, before television, and before rock and roll. Some of the timeless, fast-paced melodies include: 76 Trombones …Gary, Indiana …Lida Rose, and Marian the Librarian, and each is now a well-established piece of Americana.

Tonight’s Moments of Happiness

Camp Randall Sing-A-LongFor decades the only source of music in Camp Randall Stadium was the UW Band. However, after several ren-ovations, new technology and the installation of a “state-of-the-art” sound system, “canned,” pre-recorded music soon came into vogue and it didn’t take long for students and fans to start “joining-in” when a familiar melody was played on the PA system. The songs that were sung were catchy, fun, but often annoying …something was missing …the WISCONSIN BAND. We offer some live accompani-ments to a few of these timeless favorites to provide more “presence” and invite you to a Camp Randall Sing-A-Long. Included are: Twist and Shout, Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl, Build Me Up Buttercup, House of Pain’s Jump Around, and, of course, Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.

Echoes from Camp RandallIf you have a strong awareness of history …if you revere tradition, legacies, and past glory …and if your allegiance to our great university is unyielding, then Camp Randall is a location dear to your heart. The arch ….the Union …the camp grounds all provide great memories of music …spirit …and days gone by. These are a few favorites: Fanfare for the Common Man …Caravan …and Swingtown.

Tonight’s Moments of Happiness

Jesus Christ SuperstarRecently a newly revised television production of the time-less musical JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR garnered even additional acclaim, and reminded audiences of the brilliant but controversial history of this monumental project by Brit-ish composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. SUPERSTAR is an accounting of the final days of Christ that has an earned the uncommon appellation of “rock opera.” Webber’s music runs the gamut from the hardest rock sounds of “Heaven on Their Minds” to the beautiful ballad, “I Don’t’ Know How to Love Him,” to the ragtime rhythms of “King Herrod’s Song” to the majestic, “I Only Want to Say (Gethsemene).” JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is inspirational theater …a musical milestone ...and a modern day masterpiece.

The Fifth QuarterThe Fifth Quarter may almost be as famous as the UW Band. If you are a Badger fan, you have your favorite tune …if you are a Badger alum, you want to hear You’ve Said It All …if you are just curious about what the fuss is about, you want to try The Chicken Dance. The fact is this unique aspect of almost all of our performances will appear in some form. However …you must participate …The Fifth Quarter is not a spectator sport. Join in!

Behind the ScenesFor the first few versions of the UW Varsity Band Concert, “production values” were modest. (Perhaps even “non- existent!”) There was no video, no backdrops, only 20 or 30 lights (borrowed from local high schools), a modest PA system, and a few “homemade” pyrotechnic effects. Slowly improvements were brought to the production, in a large part due to several exceptional people who returned to the show year after year to serve as the production team. These “friends of the band” were creative coordinators, technical coordinators, lighting designers, sound designers, stage managers, pyrotechnic experts, administrative assis-tants, and ticket managers. The names of those and many more who serve as the 2019 production team are listed at the end of this program; however, the band would partic-ularly like to thank Brian Anderson, Ken Ferencek, John Gerbig, Bob Monschein, Rod MacDonald, Eric Redding, Curt Sorensen, and Sarah Marty for their unceasing interest, patience, and advice.

Each of those team members is highly professional, very dedicated, and extremely creative. All have brought their experience in theater productions throughout the United States to our concert. This note of appreciation hardly seems enough for their contributions to this production; nonetheless …to each and every one of these loyal friends we again say …THANKS!
