Vayechi—Real Prayer

Breishis 48:22 “…with my sword and my bow”

Rashi “my bow – this is prayer”

R av Simcha Zissel (1824 – 1898) a disciple of the great R. Yisroel

Salant and a foremost proponent of the Mussar movement, was

a person of extremely fragile health. In fact he was so frail, that before

Succos he would search for the smallest kosher esrog he could find, so

that he would not become tired from holding it during the waving of the

lulav! He was also accustomed to keep some cookies close to him while

he was davening in case he would faint from the exertion of standing dur-

ing the silent prayer. Nevertheless despite his condition he took a long

time to daven shemone esrei and he always prayed holding a siddur in his

hands. Once in the middle of Shachris he got up from his usual seat and

walked all the way to the back of the beis medrash where he opened a

book and began to read before returning to his place and continuing with

his davening (prayers). Afterwards the reason for this unusual behavior

became clear. R. Simcha’s siddur was missing ONE WORD and he did not

want to read this word from memory!

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen

Halachic Bulletin

Rav Moshe Feinstein writes in Igros Moshe Yoreh

Deah 3:147:2 that if a dead person is cremated,

either because they requested this, or even if

their children had this done to them, their ashes

should not be buried in a Jewish cemetery. More-

over ashes of any niftar never need to be buried.
