The effect of peer feedback on small group learning in case scenario based tutorials

Participants: A group of 25 first year medical students

What is peer feedback?

• It is an important tool in promoting learning. Its goal is to improve the performance of the receiver by closing the gap between current performance of a student and a more positive and desired state ( Archer 2010).

What are Case Scenario Based Tutorials

• Case scenario based tutorials unlike “conventional” tutorials, in which questioning of the students on the given subject occurs, involves solving actual clinical scenarios in a given amount of time. This not only makes the student’s theoretical knowledge stronger but allows them to apply their knowledge in a clinical setting while greatly enhancing their critical learning.

METHODLOLGY

• It is a six week study in which the participants meet each week for their 2-hour physiology tutorial.

• In the first two weeks we gave them training sessions on how to give the feedback and its significance

• In the third week we conducted the pre test ( their first feedback).

Page 6: Vaughn l&t 21012 presentation

• In the next two weeks the students reflected on their received feedback and set their goals for improvement.

• They were taught non verbal communication and different motivational and collaborative exercises were conducted.

• In the sixth week the post test ( their second feedback) will be conducted followed by a questionnaire about the peer feedback and focus group.

Why conduct Peer Feedback?• It provides the students with an unbiased reflection of their role in their group.• Allows each student to reflect and improve the quality of their contribution towards the group.•It improves group functioning while improving the overall learning of the group.•It provides a way for students to themselves improve their individual contributions and tutorial learning.
