1 Vatican Shows Concern for Drivers, Street People A #iveday meeting on the “Pastoral Care of the Road/Street” was held last October 1923, 2010 in Bangkok. The Church of Taiwan was represented by Fr. Paul Fan, Sr. Emma Lee, Fr. Loloy Napierre, and Ms Rose Lin. The object of the care is not the road, or the street per se, but those people who spent most of their hours on the road or street – truck drivers, cab or bus drivers, street women, street children, and the homeless. This meeting was under the aegis of the Vatican Of#ice PCPCMIP (the Ponti#ical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People). It was called to consider the response of the Church in Asian and Oceania to the needs of those who live in and on roads and streets. It studied how to evangelize persons who often spend long hours alone, resulting in a dif#iculty in establishing social relationships. It also emphasized the need for inculcating safe driver habits to prevent some of the 3500 deaths that occur daily from road accident. The opening talk was by the Most Reverend Antonio Maria Velgio, President of the PCPCMIP.
