Consultancy Assignment at Kakira Sugar Ltd., Uganda

Dr. Deepali Nimbalkar, Senior Scientist & Head andMr. Eknath Alhat, Research Assistant from the Dept.of Environmental Sciences, VSI visited Kakira SugarLtd. Uganda during February 7-14, 2016 to study theproblems of effluent treatment plant. It is one of theoldest and largest sugar producers in Uganda havingcane crushing capacity of 7500 TCD and area undersugarcane around 20,000 hectares. An effluenttreatment plant of 3000 m3/day capacity had been

installed at the mill a year ago. However, the planthas not been commissioned properly due to variousproblems. VSI team studied the design of thetreatment plant, characteristics of the effluent, itsgeneration, analysis and measurement of flow. Theproblems were identified and remedial measureswere suggested. The plant has begun to showimprovement in its performance with certainmodifications in process.

Mr. PV Ghodke, Scientist,Agronomy Section, in hiswelcome speech highlightedthe background andimportance of theme of theworkshop. Mr. DB Phonde, Senior Scientist & HeadSoil Science Section, in his inaugural address statedthe present situation of plant and ratoon crops in theoperational areas of sugar mills prevailed underdrought condition and efforts taken by VSI toincrease in the ratoon area so as to make availablethe sugarcane for crushing to sugar mills inforthcoming crushing season 2016-17. Total 48participants from 28 sugar mills of Maharashtra hadparticipated in the workshop.

Mr. PV Ghodke made presentation on ‘Weed controlin Sugarcane.’ He highlighted the weed speciescommonly found in sugarcane crop, yield losses dueto weed infestation and described advanced methodsof weed control. He suggested that any single methodof weed control will not serve the purpose. AnIntegrated approach of cost effective weedmanagement should be followed in sugarcane.

a. Pre-emergence spray of Attrazine 50% [email protected] a.i./ha at 3-4 days after planting of

sugarcane. ORb. Early post-

emergence spray ofMetribuzine 70%WP @ 1.25kg a.i./ha at 6-7 days afterplanting.c. Post-emergence sprayof Metribuzine 70%WP @1.25 kg a.i./ha + 2,4-D(Sodium salt)80%[email protected] a.i./haat30-35 days after firstspraying.

d. Hand weeding or hoeing at 30 – 45 days afterplanting and as per the weed infestation upto90 days of crop growth.

e. Spot application of Grammoxone orGlyphosate (non-selective) herbicides @ 4-5ml per litre water with knapsack sprayerholding hood in between the cane rows after90 days of crop growth.

f. Control of Cyprus rotundus, narrow and broadleaf weeds Sempra 75W.G@ 90gm +Metribuzine 70 WP @ 750 gm /ha can be usedin sugarcane as post-emergence selectiveherbicide at 2-3 leaf stage of weed.

Mr. DB Phonde highlighted the present droughtsituation prevailing in Marathwada and CentralMaharashtra and mentioned that cane availability willbe reduced in the forthcoming crushing season2016-17. He appealed to the officers in the gatheringto increase the area under ratoon crop with application

Agriculture officers and cane development officersfrom South, Central and North-East Maharashtra

presented cane development activities implementedby their sugar mills especially during drought situationand implementation of drip irrigation, ratoonmanagement schemes for multiple ratooning toincrease the cane availability in their operational area.

In the concluding session, Mr. Shivajirao Deshmukh,DG, VSI addressed the gathering and expressed theneed to give attention towards increase of ratoonproductivity by implementing best ratoon managementpractices. He also suggested for multiple ratooningon larger area. Practice of in situ trash mulching andits decomposition with use of decomposing cultureshould be encouraged among the farmers by givingincentives for 1st ratoon and 2nd ratoon crops. Workshop on “Sugarcane Crop Geometry”

A one day workshop on “Sugarcane Crop Geometry”was organized at VSI on February 27, 2016. Theworkshop was inaugurated by Dr. SM Pawar,Sugarcane Specialist, Central Sugarcane ResearchStation (CSRS), Padegaon, Dist. Satara. In hisinaugural address, he explained the importance ofsugarcane physiology and mentioned to look at theleaf area index and number of canes per square meterfor achieving the high cane yields. The qualityparameters were not affected by changing thesugarcane crop geometry. Dr. RS Hapase, PrincipalScientist & Head, Plant Breeding in his welcomespeech highlighted the importance of sugarcanephysiology in getting the high cane yields.

Mr. PR Hapase, Scientist, Dr. MW Pawar, TechnicalOfficer, and Dr. SD Talekar, Technical Officer, PlantBreeding section gave presentations on thesugarcane crop geometry.

Officers and expressed the need to pay attentiontowards the implementation of the best managementpractices to increase the sugarcane productivity duringthe prevailing drought situation.

Working Group for Cane Development committeefinalized the following important recommendations.

1. Planting at 4.0 to 5.0 feet distance so as tomake use of power tillers and mini tractor foreasy inter-culturing operations.

2. For getting the higher plant population insugarcane, the small earting up and finalearthing up should be followed to maintainhigher tillering.

3. Drip irrigation recommended for 5 feetdistance between rows.

4. As far as possible the planting layout (rowsand furrows) should be made as North-Southdirections.

He further emphasized the need of usingtwo row barley malts in Indian microbrewery sector toenhance the quality of beer with minimum financialimplications.

Dr. SV Patil explained about the academic activitiesof his department and efforts taken by the staff fortraining the students of M.Sc. (Wine Brewing and

Alcohol Technology, PuneUniversity affiliated course) andDIFAT (Post Graduate Diploma inIndustrial Fermentation andAlcohol Technology) courses toenhance their inter-personnelskills, technical skills andemployability of the students. Hefurther stated that almost 60 %of newly recruited assistantbrewers in microbreweries acrossIndia are alumni of VSI.

Mr. Sanjiv Nagpal expressed hisviews on potential tie-up between

VSI and Weyermann malting company regardingenhancement of brewing skills of students for thebenefit of the Indian Commercial and MicrobrewerySector. There is no need for the Indian students to optfor foreign universities when quality education isavailable at affordable price at VSI. He agreed toprovide malts and hops to VSI at discounted rates forgetting hands on experience for the students to makevarious beer styles. Mr. Pradeep Verma, also assuredthat Weyermann can provide training facilities to someof the interested students at their establishedmicrobrewery facilities in India.

Dr. SV Patil thanked Weyermann representatives forvisiting VSI and also appreciated their views onallowing students for in-plant training.
