EASTER CHICKS . . . but not the usual ones!

These are Uzbek babies, a nice Red and Black, from different Parents. You get an idea of the head type even at this age. Uzbek may be Beak Crest, Shell Crest or Double Crest, NO preference when judging. The Beak Crest can also vary, a full round, a half round, or a Beak 'tuft' are all allowed. Photo: Mick Bassett.

Friday 10 January 2014, Hub Maar, Raymond Ruyters, Rene van der Kerkhof and Geri Glastra were the first judges in the Netherlands to pass their exam for the Herve / Mergelland Hoen. From now they are qualified to judge the Mergelland Fowl at official exhibitions on the basis of the official breed standard In the Netherlands, Judges are guided, trained and tested within the National Association of Small animal keepers.

FOUR JUDGES PASS THEIR EXAM FOR THE ‘NEW’ BREED HERVE /MERGELLAND FOWL

Text: Jan Schaareman.

The Herve Fowl originated in Belgium and was already recognized in 1896 in Liege. These chickens also appeared in 1960, 1970 in the Dutch-Belgian border area Mergelland (Mergel=Marl). In the Netherlands, the Herve breed was called Mergelland Fowl. The first egg of the Mergelland Fowl, laid on January 2, 2013, was officially presented to Governor Theo Bovens on January 9th. Since 2013, the breed is also recognized in the Netherlands.

DEWLAP OF BASRA By: Rein Slikker. These pigeons originated in Iraq, Lebanon and Syria. I think it is most fascinating that their eyes can have green spots in them. The colour names are really oriental: rihani (blue ground colour) and abrasdel (pale meal). Lately, at the show of the Frisian Pigeon Club, I spoke with a pigeon breeder from Iraq. He told me that despite the continuing unrest in that country there was an active pigeon association with judges and exhibitions. You see, a pigeon brings peace! The Basra Dewlap has a strong upright body, a broad, gently sloping head and a beautiful dewlap. The cocks in the colour variety Rihani have a golden neck, the hens in that colour only need to have a have yellow-golden patch on their chest. This wonderful breed with his super colours deserves more breeders, although advice is necessary. For instance, you cannot mate the abrasdel together just like that. (Note by the editor: The Females are far more 'Blueish' in colour as it is a sex linked colour. You can see the 'Blue' in the flights of this Male.) There are more problems. Hopefully the breeders can work that out.

FIRST SHOW OF *SERAMA NEDERLAND* - NETHERLANDS By Petra Wilhelmus. Dear Serama fanciers, We can look back on a fantastic first show of *SERAMA NEDERLAND/Netherlands* held on 6 March, 2014 last in the clubhouse of TKV - "Tielse KleindierVereniging Tiel” – “Small Animal Association in Tiel”. It was special to share the same passion for the Serama to welcome so many people. Such a beautiful day would not have been possible without the efforts of many people. We would like, therefore, a word of thanks to the participants who travelled to Tiel from all parts of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany with their Seramas. We received an entry of 38 Seramas of marvellous quality. Fair sportsmanship of the participants and the enthusiasm of the many visitors made a cosy and relaxed atmosphere.

Thank you also to TKV for the hospitality and for the opportunity to use the venue for this show and providing the use of the cages. An excellent lunch provided by them tasted very good. Thank you to the sponsors: Garvo for the flag and the pins. To the Petshop "De Driesprong" from Kesteren who has made it possible to give an appropriate price in the form of food bags. Joyce from the flower and plant shop "Patrick Koolwijk" offered six beautiful bouquets. The "Chicken House - Kippenhuis" shop was present with a beautiful well-kept booth with chicken supplies and sponsored the second and third prize in the lottery.

Many hands make light work. Thanks to Jean Vereecke, Joyce, Rick Hendriks and everyone who helped us to succeed the day. Then a very special thank you, we want to express to John Benoot, president of Serama Club Belgium, who, in a very professional manner judged the Seramas. His commentary and explanation was very educational for everyone. Thank you to the video recordings of Rick Hendriks and beautiful pictures of Jai, Davy and other photographers who have immortalized this event, with worldwide distribution, that for a long time and with pride we can enjoy the souvenirs of a wonderful Serama event 2014. Thank you to All! In the next page you will find a link to the excellent photo report of this show, by Jai. Just CLICK the hen in the photo ... wait and the SLIDE SHOW will start automatically ... Thank You

Dipo products originated from the combination of health care / pigeons, but there is also experience with breeding chickens, rabbits and cats. Meanwhile, research has irrevocably shown that these products have proven their operation, especially in the contraceptive area. The following products can be ordered through the webshop http://www.dipoproducten.nl/Dipoproducten.php Dipobac probiotica contains 5 different good lactic acid bacteria and thus regulates a healthy intestinal flora. It also increases the overall resistance and expels the pathogenic bacteria and pathogens in the feces from the body. Quick visible results. Dipobac is "the right alternative”. Dipo protector contains Thyme oil, Oregano oil and Eucalyptus oil and works especially well in pigeons against Trichomoniasis, worms and Coccidiosis. Prevents infection via drinking water. Garlic oil plus is an oil with garlic, plus the three above oils. The addition of chlorophyll in this oil provides some extra vitamins. Expels micro organisms, works as a blood purifier, improves overall fitness and increases resistance. Dipo propolis is one of the few substances to which a natural antibiotic activity is attributed. Regular benefits give a peak and the highest degree of resistance. Dipo Propolis keeps the airway clean and inhibits the growth of fungi and bacteria. It also protects the drinking water against bacterial growth, even at higher temperatures.

THE MACCLESFIELD TIPPLER By: Mick Bassett. Here is a print by A F Lydon (1836-1917) which shows where the English Show Tippler acquired its basic type from and also the 'Tippler Bronze' colour. The 'Mac' was (is) small, compact, with fairly short legs, usually 'Light Print' or 'Dark Print' pattern, most often Blue but also showing 'Tippler Bronze'. A High flying Tippler that had long flying times, to 15 hours (but not long enough for 'modern' flyers). The basic ideal English Show Tippler (EST) type has not changed since those days, also good type Mac's are probably as seldom as English Show Tipplers now. A shame, a very pretty breed. The originals of this breed would have come from India (the Continent) and it was the 'Original' Tippler in the UK. In fact the 'other colours' - other than 'Print' Pattern were not even considered 'Tipplers' in those days! Do you want to know more on this old breed? Read here:

HOLIDAY PHOTOS . . . Hans Nieuwland (NL) send us this photo, taken on the ferry from Banjul to Barra in Gambia. This is not an unusual way to ‘transport’ your chickens in Africa. This is a rooster and it had been a long (and hot) journey for him in the plastic bag. The ferry was loaded with people and all sorts of vehicles cramming into the available space.

In Barra he ran into these chickens at a local ‘farm’.
