Dear reader, In the Northern Hemisphere, Summer is about to start officially. Long days and short nights, probably less time will be spent on the computer.
Nevertheless we filled a new issue for you with all sorts of articles and instalments, written by various authors. Some articles are short and sweet, for just a quick read. Others are extensive and very interesting. We know we have to compete with beach and bbq, not to forget the World Championship Football hosted in Brazil! However, the June issue will be available two months long and even after that, in the online archives. So, enjoy the sun, your birds and all other summer pleasures. Press report ORGANISATION CHAMPION SHOW 2015. Following the resignation of daily management in the fall of 2013, Aad Stehmann had taken the position of chairman ad interim and performed with pleasure and devotion. Recently, a prime candidate has been found for the post of chairman. After internal consultation, the exhibition organization unanimously agreed to the appointment of Robert Meijer as its new chairman. He is very well established in the organization and already proved a valuable mainstay for the team. The whole team is looking forward to organizing the Champion Show in January 2015 with the usual background support of Ornithophilia and Avicultura. It goes without saying that the Champion Show will continue with the show on the successful path. There will be special attention to the National Shows of Rabbits, Guinea pigs and Small Rodents (KLN) and the National Shows of Fancy Pigeons (NBS) which both are housed at the Champion Show.
The Champion Show 2015 will be held 22 - 24 January 2015.

EXHIBITION DATA FOR THE YEARS 2015 and 2016 The North Show and the Champion Show together agreed on setting the exhibition data for the years 2015 and 2016. This was prompted by the preference of the Champion Show to go to the third weekend in January, this way finding a compromise between the needs of pigeon breeders and fur breeders. The Noordshow came in a fix due to the turn of the year, which in 2015 would be in the middle of the exhibition week, so that is no option. Based on these data, it was decided in joint consultation to keep the following planning: Year Noordshow Champion Show 2015 8-10 January 22-24 January 2016 7- 9 January 21-23 January The North Show and the Champion Show realize that a longer period is preferable between shows. Having taken all interests into consideration, we think that this way the most justice was done to the participants of both National Exhibitions.
COLD-BLOODED CHICKS By Elly Vogelaar At the day of hatch, chicks are still poikilotherm, meaning they have a variable body temperature. Gradually they change into a homeotherm (= stable body temperature) animal. Before chicks are completely homeotherm, they cannot control their own body temperature. They behave as cold-blooded animals by adjusting their body temperature to the environmental temperature.
However, in contradiction to cold-blooded animals, chicks have an optimal rectal temperature, which is between 40 and 40.6°C. When rectal temperatures
are in this range, the chick is in its ‘thermal neutral zone’, meaning they will be able to keep their body temperature at a constant level. The development of the thermoregulation system takes place during the first four days after hatch. Chicks that are being too cold will not search for feed and water and have a higher risk to get sick. Therefore, make sure that air and floor temperature reach a comfort level for the chicks. HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR CHICKEN TODAY?
ICE COLD AND DEAD? By Bill Burnside.
Fabio van Olst (NL) sent us 3 photos and a few lines: It was early in spring and the days were still cold. For whatever reason, the parent had left the nest leaving it to the cold climate. This was a single baby I thought was dead. It was ice cold and had no visible signs of life. It didn’t have a nest mate to keep warm with. I warmed a pot of water, placed a plate over it and sat the ice cold baby on the plate. After a while it opened its eyes, and as time went by, the bird began to move. The warmth brought it back from the ice cold state it was in.
I found a baby English Short Face Tumbler in the same state of cold as the article above. I too thought it was dead. I took it into the house and ran warm water over its body, and at the same time massaging it. After a short time, it began to move. I dried it off with a towel and placed it under my arm pit which is quite warm. The bird survived and it was named Arm Pit. What is the lesson learned about young who appear to be dead from the cold? The two stories of which the babies appeared to be dead may give pause to think, if you have a similar situation, you may be able to save the bird with a little tender loving care and warmth.
