The appearance of new types of stamps and forms ofpostage usually involves problems of terminology. How bestto define the ‘new stamps’, whose characteristics of issueand / or use have little or nothing to do with ‘traditional’stamps?

Even the acronym ATM, one of the best known and usedamong collectors, worldwide, is becoming obsolete andcannot be used to define some of the new types of variablevalue stamps.

These terminology limitations sometimes lead to the use ofterms taken from traditional philately, which erroneouslydefine some of the characteristics of ‘new stamps’. Such isthe case with variable value stamps issued by ‘Post & Go’kiosks in the UK and other countries. From September 2011,Royal Mail started to regularly issue stamps with specialinscriptions, the first dedicated to the centenary of ArnoldMachin’s birth. Since then, the terms ‘overprint’ and lesscommonly, ‘underprint’ have been used to refer to thesecommemorative texts or just the identifiers of the locationwhere the kiosk is installed. In philately an overprint is a textor graphic which may serve different purposes, but is addedto a stamp after its printing or manufacture. Underprint is animpression underneath the stamp design, usually as asecurity measure to prevent forgery. Post & Go kiosks are notjust printers adding commemorative inscriptions to existingstamps. These machines are capable of printing values thusmaking stamps from simple self-adhesive labels with pre-printed designs, but without any face value. Specialinscriptions are printed at the same time as the stamp andtherefore not a subsequent overprint. Similarly, theunderprint on ‘Post & Go’ issues may be the microprintedtext lines appearing in the security background, but neverthe special or commemorative inscriptions of the stamps,even though these are printed under the face value.

For me, the stamp on the front cover is, and will alwayssimply remain, a variable value stamp with a special imprint.

La aparición de nuevos tipos de sellos y formas de franqueosuele comportar problemas de terminología; ¿ Cómo definir alos ‘nuevos sellos’, cuyas características de emisión y/outilización poco o nada tienen que ver con los sellos‘tradicionales’ ?

Incluso el acrónimo ATM, uno de los más conocidos y usadosentre los coleccionistas de todo el mundo, está quedandoobsoleto y no puede utilizarse para definir algunos de losnuevos tipos de sellos de valor variable.

Estas limitaciones en la terminología hacen que, enocasiones, se utilicen términos provenientes de la filateliatradicional para definir, de forma errónea, algunos de losatributos de los ‘nuevos sellos’. Tal es el caso de los sellos devalor variable emitidos por los quioscos ‘Post & Go’ en el ReinoUnido y otros países. A partir de septiembre de 2011, Royal Mailempezó a emitir de forma regular sellos con inscripcionesespeciales, la primera dedicada al centenario del nacimiento deArnold Machin. Desde entonces se han venido utilizando lostérminos ‘overprint’ y, menos habitualmente, ‘underprint’, parareferirse a estos textos conmemorativos o, simplemente,identificadores del lugar donde está instalado el quiosco. Enfilatelia, un ‘overprint’ o sobreimpresión es un texto o gráfico,que puede tener diferentes funciones, pero que se añade a unsello con posterioridad a su impresión o fabricación.‘Underprint’ es una impresión realizada bajo el diseño de unsello, normalmente como medida de seguridad para prevenirfalsificaciones. Los quioscos ‘Post & Go’ no son simplesimpresoras que añaden textos conmemorativos a sellos yaexistentes. Son equipos capaces de producir valores, de‘fabricar’ sellos a partir de simples etiquetas autoadhesivas condiseños preimpresos pero sin ningún valor facial. La impresiónespecial se produce en el mismo momento en que se genera elsello y, por tanto, no es una sobreimpresión posterior. Delmismo modo, el ‘underprint’ de las emisiones ‘Post & Go’podrían ser las líneas de texto microimpreso que aparecen en elfondo de seguridad, pero nunca las inscripciones especiales oconmemorativas que incluyen los sellos, por mucho que seimpriman ‘under’, debajo del valor facial.

Para mí, el sello que aparece en la portada es y seguirásiendo, simplemente, un sello de valor variable con unaimpresión especial.

rooms of the Caulfield Racecourse. This important eventwas organized by the Australian Philatelic Federation,with the patronage of the Federation of Inter-AsianPhilately (FIAP) and with the indispensable collaborationof Australia Post.

The exhibition brought together collections from over20 countries in Asia and Australia, as well as a non-competitive exhibition (ROYALPEX 125) of collectionspresented by members of the Royal Philatelic Society ofVictoria, which marks its 125th anniversary in 2017.

In the commercial area, Melbourne 2017 boasted some60 booths, occupied by international dealers, auction houses,postal administrations and various companies related to theworld of philately; among them, Cartor Security Printing.

Already directly related and relevant to our field ofstudy, Cartor installed its own ‘Post & Go’ philatelickiosk on its stand with code CSP1CSP1CSP1CSP1CSP1, presented for thefirst time during the PHILATAIPEI 2016 exhibition (see

article published in VARIABLE 43 43 43 43 43).Cartor used the kiosk to print special sample labels

and during the four days of the event the machine wasavailable to visitors for the purchase of ‘Post & Go’

JerseyandGuernseyPostvariablevaluestamps.

Faced with the costly decision at the World Stamp ShowNY2016 (VARIABLE 41 41 41 41 41), where each philatelic administrationshipped its own philatelic kiosk to the United States, thisoption tested in Melbourne significantly reducedoperational costs and could be repeated at futurephilatelic events.

It was not the first time ‘Post & Go’ stamps hadbeen issued in Australia. Four years earlier, at theWorld Stamp Exhibition Australia 2013, also inMelbourne, Royal Mail installed two earlier versionkiosks of the current ‘Post & Go’ machines, whichissued UK stamps (see article in VARIABLE 29 29 29 29 29). Nor wasit the first time that a single ‘Post & Go’ machinehad issued stamps from twodifferent postal administrations.But it was the first time that aprivate philatelic kiosk, notbelonging or owned by any postaladministration or philatelic service,was used in public to issue stampsfrom two different countries.

During the four days ofMelbourne 2017, the CSP1 CSP1 CSP1 CSP1 CSP1 kioskissued Jersey Post stamps with thethematic series ‘The Crest ofJersey’ (in matt finish) from one ofthe reels, and Guernsey Poststamps with the ‘Guernsey flag’definitive design from the otherreel. El servicio filatélico de Correos anunció la emisión de ochodiseños de ‘etiquetas franqueadoras ATM’ en 2017; dosbásicos para ser emitidos de forma permanente en el quioscofilatélico instalado en CCP Chamartín (ver artículo publicado en

VARIABLE 44 44 44 44 44), más otros seis diseños especiales, emitidostemporalmente con motivo de los tres principales eventosfilatélicos nacionales: JUVENIA 2017, la Feria Nacional delSello, y EXFILNA 2017.

La XXV edición de JUVENIA - Exposición Nacional deFilatelia Juvenil se celebró del 10 al 13 de mayo de 2017 enAvilés, Asturias. Fue organizada por el Grupo FilatélicoAvilesino y la Federación Española de Sociedades Filatélicas(FESOFI), con la colaboración de la Sociedad Estatal Correos yTelégrafos. Junto con JUVENIA, se celebró tambiénMAXIESPAÑA 2017, la primera exposición de MaximofiliaEuropea que se organiza en España.

Además de las emisiones de sellos de valor variable, Correoseditó un sello conmemorativo ilustrado con la fachada delAyuntamiento de Avilés, emitido en un Pliego Premium, yvarios matasellos especiales (imágenes al final del artículo).

La primera edición deJUVENIA se celebró enBarcelona, en 1971, y desde1973 ha venido celebrándosecada dos años. Desde 1997,Correos dedica un sello a laciudad que acoge estaexposición.

The Correos philatelic service has announced the issue ofeight designs of ‘etiquetas franqueadoras ATM’ (ATM frankinglabels), in 2017. Two ‘definitive’ designs to be on permanentsale at the philatelic kiosk installed at CCP Chamartín (see article

published in VARIABLE 44 44 44 44 44), plus another six temporary specials, onthe occasion of the three main national philatelic events:JUVENIA 2017, the national stamp fair, and EXFILNA 2017.

JUVENIA 2017, the 25th National Youth Stamp Exhibitionwas held from May 10th to 13th 2017 in Avilés, Asturias. It wasorganized by the Grupo Filatélico Avilesino and the SpanishFederation of PhilatelicSocieties (FESOFI), with thecollaboration of theSociedad Estatal Correos yTelégrafos. MAXIESPAÑA2017, the first Europeanexhibition of Maximaphilyorganized in Spain, was alsoheld in conjunction withJUVENIA.

In addition to thelaunching of new variablevalue stamps, Correosissued a commemorative‘traditional’ stamp depictingthe facade of the Avilés CityHall, issued in a sheettogether with specialpostmarks (end of the article).

The first JUVENIA was held inBarcelona, in 1971, and since 1973has been held every two years. Since1997, Correos has dedicated a stampto the city hosting this exhibition.

Although most of the exhibition andinstitution stands were located in thePalacio de Camposagrado (images next

page), a beautiful Baroque building, theorganizers had the wisdom andforesight to take the exhibition toother parts of the city, so it was more

A nivel de coleccionismo, la gran sorpresa en Avilés fue lapresentación de un nuevo equipamiento de sobremesa quepermite la emisión de sellos de valor variable similares a losemitidos por el quiosco. Este sistema informático ha sidodesarrollado por el servicio filatélico de Correos, y seráutilizado, principalmente, para la producción de pedidos yabonos. De esta forma, los responsables del servicio filatélicoya no tendrán que desplazarse al quiosco, o movertemporalmente el equipo de suubicación.

El nuevo sistema informático deuso interno incluye una tableta, conun programa especialmente creadoy diseñado de acuerdo a lasnecesidades, que permite la gestióny el control de todo el proceso deimpresión de los sellos de valorvariable, y al que también puedeaccederse a través de una pantalla yun teclado. La impresión se realizacon tres impresoras térmicas directasBrother TD-4100N; dos para lossellos y una para los recibos.

A unique code for each stamp is printed on the bottom ofthe stamp. The first block of all stamps issued in Avilés isB5ES17B5ES17B5ES17B5ES17B5ES17, ‘BBBBB’ indicates that it is a philatelic issue, ‘55555’ the monthof issue (May), ‘ESESESESES’ for the country, and ‘1717171717’ for the year ofissue. There follows the machine code, the session and stampnumbers. Both designs could only be obtained with the fourprogrammed basic postal rates - A, A2, B and C, making upthe four-value set or ‘Tira de 4 Tarifas’. These face valueindicators correspond to the domestic postal rates for lettersup to 20 and 50 g, and the rates to European countries andthe rest of the world up to 20g., respectively.

For collectors the great surprise in Avilés was the display ofnew desktop equipment, printing variable value stamps, verysimilar to those issued by the kiosk. This computer system hasbeen developed by the Correos philatelic service and will bemainly used for the production of single and standing orders.By using this new equipment, the philatelic service staff willno longer have to go to the kiosk, or temporarily move theequipment from its location to produce larger orders.

This new computer system, for internal use only, includes atablet, with a program speciallycreated and designed to cater to theneeds of the philatelic service thusenabling the management andcontrol of the whole process ofvariable value stamp printing. Thecomputer application is alsoaccessible through a screen and akeyboard. The system includes threeBrother TD-4100N direct thermalprinters, two for stamps and one forreceipts.

The new computer system usesthe same rolls of thermal labels, isprogrammed with the same values



and, as can be seen in theimages, the informationprinted on the stamps isalmost identical to the ES01ES01ES01ES01ES01kiosk imprint; same format,size and printing fonts. Onlythe code of the printingequipment (ES02ES02ES02ES02ES02 in Avilés)shows the origin of thestamps. The receipts issuedby this new equipment, alsoprinted on thermal paper,include the sameinformation, although thesize is much larger thanthose issued by the kiosk.They can only be obtainedtogether with the stampsissued during thoseexhibitions or philatelicevents in which thephilatelic serviceparticipates. No receipts willbe issued for the stampsproduced for single orstanding orders.

Like in 2016, the philatelicservice produced apictorial covers for theATM issues. In the image,the cover includes fourTarifa A stamps issued bythe two machines (ES01ES01ES01ES01ES01and ES02ES02ES02ES02ES02), with the twoJUVENIA 2017commemorativepostmarks.

No se emitirán recibos para lossellos correspondientes a pedidos puntuales o abonos.

Al igual que en 2016, el servicio filatélico editó un sobreilustrado especial para lasemisiones ATM. En laimagen, el sobre incluyecuatro sellos de Tarifa Aemitidos por los dosequipos (ES01ES01ES01ES01ES01 y ES02ES02ES02ES02ES02),con los dos matasellosconmemorativos deJUVENIA 2017.



El Centro CulturalInternacional OscarNiemeyer es un magníficoproyecto del arquitectobrasileño, construido entre2008 y 2011. El complejocultural está formado porcinco piezas; una plaza, unauditorio, una cúpula, unatorre mirador y un edificiopolivalente.El casco histórico de Avilésfue declarado ConjuntoHistórico Artístico en 1955.Destacan las calles conedificios con soportales, algunos anteriores alsiglo XVII, que permitían realizar actividades aresguardo de la lluvia o el sol. Este motivoilustra también el matasello turístico.

The Oscar Niemeyer International CulturalCenter is a great project of the Brazilian architectof the same name, built between 2008 and2011. The cultural complex is formed by fiveelements, an open square, an auditorium, adome, a sightseeing tower and a multipurposebuilding.The historical centre of Avilés has been included

in the heritage listing since1955. The city has streets withbuildings with arcades, someof them dating back to beforethe XVII century and coveredpassageways in front of theshops or for the use of marketstalls. This motif also illustratesthe tourist postmark.

Only two weeks after the Avilés Youth StampExhibition, the second major philatelic event of theyear was inaugurated in Spain, the Feria Nacional delSello in Madrid. In 2017, the 49th stamp fair was heldfrom May 25th to 28th, again in the Plaza Mayor ofMadrid, which commemorates its fourth centenary. Itis a fair organized by the Sociedad Estatal Correos yTelégrafos, S.A., with the collaboration of ANFIL (thenational association of stamp and coins dealers) and

Fábrica Nacional deMoneda y Timbre (theSpanish Mint). Like theprevious year, the fairwas held in a largetemporary pavilion,opposite the Casa de laPanadería, with 18commercial stands, plusthe stands of Correos,ANFIL, the Real Casa dela Moneda - FNMT, and aguest country, Israel.

Sólo dos semanas después de laJUVENIA de Avilés, se inauguró elsegundo gran evento filatélico delaño en España, la Feria Nacional delSello de Madrid. En 2017, la 49edición de la Feria se celebró del 25al 28 de mayo, de nuevo en la PlazaMayor de Madrid, que este añoconmemora su cuarto centenario. Esuna feria organizada por la SociedadEstatal Correos y Telégrafos, S.A.,con la colaboración de ANFIL y laFábrica Nacional de Moneda yTimbre. Al igual que el año anterior,la feria se desarrolló en una grancarpa situada frente a la Casa de laPanadería, con 18 standscomerciales, además de losinstitucionales de Correos, ANFIL, la Real Casa de la Moneda -FNMT, y un país invitado, Israel.

Tras la edición de 2016 dedicada el Tricentenario del Correoen España (ver artículo publicado en VARIABLE 41 41 41 41 41), la Feria del Sello2017 estuvo dedicada al mundo del cine y el sello, condiferentes exposiciones y propuestas para animar la

Around the pavilion, there were photocalls with movie characters. And inside, a movietheatre with an audiovisual devoted to cinemastamps issued by Correos, together with a‘chroma’ zone allowing the visitor to appear inscenes from ‘¡Bienvenido, Míster Marshall!’ or‘Belle Époque’; two well-known Spanish films.

During the fair, Correos launched variousphilatelic products related to the world ofcinema, which aroused greatinterest among the visitors. Inparticular, a stamp sheet printedwith ‘lenticular’ technology andvarious products dedicated tothe films ‘Star Wars’ incommemoration of the 40 yearsof this series. Also a thematicbook and two new stampsdedicated to Spanish cinemaicons.

Following its appearance atthe 2016 stamp fair, Correosagain installed the ES01ES01ES01ES01ES01philatelic kiosk at the 2017 show. In just one year, the ‘ATMPunto Filatélico’ project has been fully rolled out, with aconservative and successful issuing policy, and a very goodacceptance by collectors. Unlike 2016, in which the use ofspecial and definitive designs were alternated, during the fourdays of the 2017 fair, the machine issued variable valuestamps with only the two special designs for this event.

En especial, unahoja bloque impresa contecnología lenticular y variosproductos dedicados a laspelículas ‘Star Wars’, enconmemoración de los 40años de la saga, un librotemático ‘Sellos de película’,o los nuevos sellos dedicadosa figuras del cine español.

Tras su presentación en laFeria del Sello 2016, Correosinstaló nuevamente elquiosco filatélico ES01ES01ES01ES01ES01 en laferia de 2017. En tan sólo un

año, el proyecto ‘ATM Punto Filatélico’ se ha consolidadoplenamente, con un programa contenido y acertado deemisiones, y una muy buena aceptación por parte de loscoleccionistas. A diferencia de 2016, en que alternó el uso dediseños especiales y básicos, durante los cuatro días de laFeria, el equipo emitió sellos de valor variable con tan sólo losdos diseños especiales para este evento.



The design called ‘Película’ (Film)on the receipts is dedicated to theSunday philatelic market of thePlaza Mayor, which in 2017 turns 90years old. The plaza first became themeeting point for collectors back in1927. The design ‘Claqueta’(Clapperboard) features Las CuatroTorres, the modern skyscrapers ofthe business area next to the Paseode la Castellana, north of Madrid,which have transformed thecapital’s skyline in recent years (see

maximum cards at the end of the article). Thelogo of the fourth centenary of the

Plaza Mayor is alsoincluded in bothdesigns.

Both designs are byJuan Antonio González,who also designed thepictorial cover releasedby Correos, and thespecial postmarks ‘ATMPunto Filatélico’ and thefair’s general postmark.This postmark was alsoavailable, for the firsttime, as an embossedpostmark, with a raiseddesign on paper (left).

In addition to the kiosk, Correos also installed the new backoffice computer system presented in Avilés, on its stand. But,unlike Avilés, the stamps issued by this equipment do not

A partir de junio de 2017, los sellos de los pedidosindividuales de coleccionistas y comerciantes, los vendidospor el propio servicio filatélico en exposicionesinternacionales, y los incluidos en los abonos anuales, seemiten con el nuevo sistema informático de uso internopresentado en Avilés. El primer bloque del código inferiorempieza con la letra ‘PPPPP’ (de PPPPProducción), siguen el mes, el paísy el año de emisión. publicado en VARIABLE 44 44 44 44 44), PostNL decidió seguirlos pasos de otros servicios filatélicos conequipos similares e instalar el quiosco en losprincipales eventos filatélicos en los queparticipa. La segunda aparición del quioscoNL01NL01NL01NL01NL01 fue en la 27 Internationale Briefmarken-Messe de Essen, en Alemania. La feria se celebródel 11 al 13 de mayo de 2017, en uno de lospabellones de Messe Essen, uno de los mayoresrecintos feriales del país. Con más de 40 administracionespostales presentes o representadas, cerca de 80 standscomerciales, y la presencia de numerosos grupos de estudio,es una de las principales feriasfilatélicas anuales que se celebranen este país.

Fue la segunda ocasión que losquioscos de Intelligent AR visitabanla feria de Essen. Dos años antes, en2015, Royal Mail había instalado dosquioscos ‘Post & Go’ en su stand, elequipo A006A006A006A006A006 del Reino Unido y elGG01GG01GG01GG01GG01 de Guernsey Post (ver artículo en

Thesecond appearance of the NL01NL01NL01NL01NL01 kiosk was atthe 27th Internationale Briefmarken-Messe inEssen, Germany. The stamp fair was held fromMay 11th to 13th 2017, in one of the halls ofMesse Essen, one of the largest trade fair

venues in Germany. With the attendance or representation ofover 40 postal administrations, nearly 80 commercial stands,plus many study groups at the event, it is one of the main

annual philatelic fairs held in thiscountry.

point of interest. Duringthe three days of the fair,the machine issued onlytwo types of stamps orautomaatpostzegels, withthe two designs launchedin January; ‘Butterflies’ fordomestic mail stamps, and‘Tulips’ for internationalmail stamps. All the stampsincluded the ‘ Essen 2017Essen 2017Essen 2017Essen 2017Essen 2017 ‘special imprint. Since theissue was released inGermany, the uniquevertically printed code ofthe stamps issued duringthe stamp fair,begins withB5DE17 NL01-B5DE17 NL01-B5DE17 NL01-B5DE17 NL01-B5DE17 NL01-,followed by thesession andstamp numbers.

With only twoavailable stamps,the programinstalled in thekiosk offered theoption of stampsfor domestic mailas singles and ingroups of two orfive stamps, andthe stamps forinternationalmail as singles orin strips of five (see screen images).

Sin anuncio público previo,totalmente por sorpresa, el museopostal de Londres introdujo, el 3de abril de 2017, un nuevo rollode etiquetas en su quioscofilatélico A001A001A001A001A001 - ‘Post & Go +’. Elnuevo diseño, ‘Post Office(London) Railway’, es uno de losseis que componen la serietemática ‘Royal Mail Heritage:Mail by Rail’, presentada duranteel Spring Stampex de febrero (ver

artículo publicado en VARIABLE 44 44 44 44 44).Completamente volcados en los

trabajos de preparación delnuevo museo postal, cuya inauguración está prevista parajulio, el diseño está dedicado a la línea subterránea deferrocarril para transporte de correo que unía varios centrosde clasificación postal de Londres. Realmente muyapropiado para el nuevo museo, una de cuyas principalesatracciones será, precisamente, la visita a este ferrocarrilsubterráneo. Sin embargo, esto será en julio. El quiosco serádesplazado al nuevo museo y muy posiblemente imprimirá unnuevo logotipo en los sellos. Entretanto, los responsables delmuseo decidieron crear aún esta emisión ‘Post & Go’ con ellogotipo gráfico y el texto ‘The Postal MuseumThe Postal MuseumThe Postal MuseumThe Postal MuseumThe Postal Museum’.

With no prior public announcementand totally by surprise, the LondonPostal Museum introduced, a new rollof labels in its A001A001A001A001A001 ‘Post & Go +’ kioskon April 3rd 2017. The new design,‘Post Office (London) Railway’, is oneof six stamps that make up the ‘RoyalMail Heritage: Mail by Rail’ thematicseries, released during Spring Stampex,in February this year (see article published

in VARIABLE 44 44 44 44 44).With the new postal museum, due

to open in July, the design depicts theunderground railwaylinking several postalsorting centres inLondon. It’s a veryappropriate design forthe new museum as oneof the main attractionswill be, precisely, the visit

to this underground railway. However, this will be in July. Thekiosk will be moved to the new museum and quite possiblywill print a new graphic on the stamps. Since 2012, after London Spring Stampex, the Association ofScottish Philatelic Societies Congress has become an annualevent for Royal Mail ‘Post & Go’ machines. In 2017, the 88th

Congress was held from Friday April 21st to Saturday 22nd, inits usual location at the Dewars Centre, in Perth, north ofEdinburgh.

This year, the congress was hosted by the LanarkshirePhilatelic Society, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of itsfoundation, in 2017. The host society produced a coverhonouring the ‘Cameronians’, (ScottishRifles), an infantry regiment of the Britisharmy. They also produced a pictorialpostcard featuring Lanarkshire postmarksand Royal Mail prepared a specialpostmark.

Royal Mail installed two kiosks at thecongress, with codes A012A012A012A012A012 and A014A014A014A014A014.Unlike previous years, Jersey Postdecided not to send its philatelic kiosk toPerth.

During the two days of the congress,the A012A012A012A012A012 machine issued stamps withthe ‘Machin’ and, for the first time, ‘SpearThistle’ designs. This design was part of the‘Symbolic Flowers’ series, first released inSeptember 2014 (see article published in VARIABLE3434343434), and now also issued as a single design inrolls. HMS Trincomalee is a Leda class sailing frigate with46 guns. Built in 1816-17 by the East IndiaCompany in Bombay, it is the only surviving RoyalNavy ship built in India, and the oldest survivingbattleship in the United Kingdom. The ship was inservice until 1986. In 1987, the HMS TrincomaleeTrust began the restoration of the frigate, whichended in 2001.

The exhibition is dedicated to theimportant role of naval aviation in achanging world, which has left behindthe Cold War era and the nuclearthreat, and is now dominated by aprocess of globalization, internationaltensions and terrorism. The exhibitionfeatures three aircrafts, the Lynx Mk3(XZ720) and Sea King HC4 (ZA298) (left),nicknamed ‘King of the Junglies’ after34 years of service in the Royal Navy,and the Harrier GR9 (ZD433), named

‘Dirty Harry’, that participated in the Wars in Afghanistan,Bosnia and the Gulf.

June 5th 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the issue of thefirst definitive stamp series featuring the Arnold Machin imageof Queen Elizabeth II. In the mid-1960s, five artists presentedtheir works for a new profile portrait of the Queen, and theArnold Machin design was selected. After several changes, inthe final version the Queen is wearing a diadem, emulatingthe portrait of Queen Victoria on the Penny Black. This image

was intended for definitive stamps featuring the portraitand face value only. However, a smaller image was

required for use on commemorative stamps. ArnoldMachin created a new design, replacing the diademwith a laurel wreath and ribbons. This version hasbeen reproduced on special stamps since 1968, as arelief or solid silhouette version. Throughout these 50years, the Machin portrait of the Queen, a national

icon, has been reproduced in more than 130 colorsand has appeared on more than 200 billion stamps.

El 5 de junio de 2017 se cumplían 50 años de la emisión dela primera serie básica de sellos ilustrados con la efigie de lareina Isabel II. A mediados de los años ’60, cinco artistaspresentaron sus propuestas para un nuevo retrato de perfil dela reina, y el diseño de Arnold Machin fue seleccionado. Trasvarios cambios, en la versión final la reina lleva puesta unadiadema, emulando el retrato de la reina Victoria en el PennyBlack. Esta imagen estaba pensada para ilustrar sellosbásicos, en los que tan sólo aparece la efigie y el valordel sello. Sin embargo, se requería una imagen demenor tamaño para ser utilizada en sellosconmemorativos. Para ello, Arnold Machin creó unnuevo diseño sin la diadema, pero con una coronade laurel y cintas en el pelo, que se ha reproducidoen los sellos desde 1968 en relieve o simplementecomo una silueta sólida. The design of the newPost & Go ‘Machin Anniversary’series shows the full-reliefdesign of the Queen’s headwith the laurelwreath. Thelabel’s securitybackgroundconsists ofwavy lineswith thecontinuoustexts ‘MACHINANNIVERSARY,1967-2017’and‘ROYALMAIL’.The series withthe same sixdesigns come in a colour palette inspired by someof the original definitive Machin stamps issuedbetween 1967 and 1968 (see Presentation Pack

illustrations); From top to bottom we have orangerust, oriental gold, spectrum violet, olive brownsepia, Paris green & olive brown. The rolls oflabels were manufactured by InternationalSecurity Printers, and have identical characteristicsto previous issues.

The new Post & Go series could be obtainedfrom June 5th 2017, at many of the NCR / SSKpostal kiosks installed in post offices across thecountry. It was also available from the IntelligentAR kiosks permanently installed at the LondonPostal Museum and Royal Mail Enquiry Offices.Royal Mail released its usual presentation packwith the six designs, all of them with the firstpriority domestic postage rate ‘1st Class up to100g’, and printed by the C001 C001 C001 C001 C001 in-house printer.

Unlike the stamps printed by the kiosks, all thestamps included in the presentation packs have
