TR1 Series VFD Introduction

Trane TR1™ Series VFDThe most commonly used motor in HVACinstallations today is the three-phase,asynchronous AC induction motor, which isboth inexpensive and durable. Standardasynchronous AC induction motors aredesigned so that the operating speed of themotor is dependent on the frequency of thepower applied. When operated from thepower line, this frequency is fixed, resultingin two position control, either on or off. Thismeans that your typical HVAC fan or pumpis running at 100% speed even when theenvironment of the building is calling forsomething less than 100% heating orcooling! Enter the HVAC Variable FrequencyDrive.

A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is anelectronic system which provides infinitelyvariable control of the speed of three-phaseAC induction motors by converting fixedfrequency and fixed voltage input power intoadjustable frequency and adjustable voltage. With a VFD installed in your HVAC system, you control the speed of the AC pump or fanmotor to meet the exact need of thebuilding’s environment.

The Trane TR1 Series VFD is an advanceddesign VFD, fully dedicated to the optimumoperation of HVAC applications. It offersenergy savings, user-friendliness and built-in functionality to meet the rigorousdemands of today’s HVAC applications.

Motor control is based on the VVCPLUS vectordrive system, providing full motor power atrated speed without derating. The AutomaticMotor Adaptation feature ensures optimummotor torque performance while theAutomatic Energy Optimizer functionoptimizes the variable frequency drive’svoltage output to the actual load of themotor, thus minimizing the powerconsumption.

Controlling the flow of air and water inHVAC systems is the only effective way tomeet the changing demands put on anHVAC system by the environment. OnlyVariable Frequency Drives can maximizethe efficiency and energy savings in today’sHVAC fan and pumping systems. The TraneTR1 Series VFD is your ultimate solution toreducing energy and maximizing occupantcomfort.

Not all of the options available on thestandalone drives described in this brochurewill be available on the factory-installeddrives as standard options.

Drive Feature User Benefit

Interchangeable keypadwith memory .................................. All keypads are identical and easily removable. Four TR1 Series VFD set-ups can be uploaded

to the keypad and saved. This allows the selection of summer/winter modes or return toprevious settings.

Operates without akeypad in place ............................. Assures tamper-proof operation. TR1 Series VFD status shown even with the keypad removed.

Keypad can be easilyremote mounted ............................ The standard keypad can be remotely mounted 10 feet from the TR1 Series VFD with a standard 9-

pin cable. The remotely mounted keypad is gasketed and carries a NEMA 12 and NEMA 3R rating.

Parameters can be uploadedand downloaded............................ In multiple TR1 Series VFD installations, only one keypad needs to be programmed. The settings

are stored with the VFD. To program multiple VFDs, upload the parameter settings to thekeypad, then place that keypad on each of the other drives and download these same settings toevery other VFD.

Preset typical HVAC defaults ...... Many installations require nothing more than scrolling through the twelve “QUICK MENU” itemsto confirm that these defaults are correct.

Built-in two setpointPID controller ................................ Can look at two feedback signals, compare with two setpoints and make various process control

decisions.

Built-in EIA-485 interface ............. Fully equipped for serial communication. Up to 31 TR1 Series VFDs can be connected to oneserial bus up to 5,000 feet long.

Built-in MODbuscommunication ............................. Allows communication through Trane Tracer Summit™.

Simplified automatic energyoptimization ................................... This automatic, dynamic control eliminates the need to select a V/Hz pattern. Automatic Energy

Optimization continually monitors the motor’s speed and load and adjusts the applied voltage tomaximize energy savings. Even at full speed, voltage will be reduced if the load is less than100%. This automatically compensates for oversized motors or systems that are not fully loaded.

Automatic highambient derate .............................. If the ambient temperature exceeds the normal limit, the VFD can be set to warn of its

overtemperature and continue to run, keeping the HVAC system functional. To control itstemperature, the drive will reduce the output carrier frequency and then, if necessary, reduce theoutput current.

Automatic motor adaptation ........ Automatic Motor Adaptation is a test algorithm that measures motor stator resistance andreactance. Knowing these, the VFD automatically optimizes performance and efficiency. Themotor does not have to be run or decoupled from the load for the Automatic Motor Adaptationsetup to be performed.

TR1 Series VFD Design Features

Harmonic MitigationThe TR1 Series VFD limits harmonicdistortion on the power line with DC linkreactors. DC link reactors on both DC buslines are supplied standard in every TR1Series VFD. These reactors reduce RMSinput current by more than 40% compared toVFDs without input reactors.

Other variable frequency drives addressharmonics with AC line reactors, usuallyexternal to the VFD. Often, these optionalAC line reactors are 50% larger than the DClink reactors standard on the TR1 Series VFD.This results in significant additional heatgeneration and reduced efficiency.

Input ProtectionIn addition, the TR1 Series VFD employsmetal oxide varistors and R/C snubber circuitry toprotect the drive from power line noise.

User-Friendly Local Controland Set-upEvery Trane TR1 Series VFD is equippedwith the same easy-to-use keypad. Nomatter what size VFD or option and controlpackage is specified, the same removable, interchangeable keypad comes standard withevery unit.

The TR1 Series VFD keypad offers morethan simple Hand/Start, Off/Stop, Auto Startcontrol.

• Transfer of parameters between differentunits – A complete set of parameterscan be programmed into one VFD, andusing the keypad, can be downloadedinto other VFDs.

• Remote mounting available – Theoptional remote keypad kit allows remotemounting of the TR1 Series VFDkeypad. The kit includes the standard 10foot, nine pin cable. Removal of thekeypad does not affect the VFD’s NEMA1 or NEMA 12 ratings, and the gasketedkeypad itself carries a NEMA 12 andNEMA 3R rating.

• Operation without the keypad – Thekeypad can be removed for tamper-proofoperation. VFD status ON, WARNING,and ALARM lights are still shown, andthe VFD will continue to run at the lastcommanded local speed or will operatein remote operation through networkcommunication.

• Complete programmability of display –The keypad’s four line, backlit, alphanumeric display can beprogrammed to display four differentmeasurements at a time. This includes°F, °C, %, Pa, bar, RPM, frequency,gallons/minute, ft3/sec, p.s.i., or 15 othermeasurements. These measurementscan be displayed in any order, with oneselected as the large, main display.

• Plain language alarms and warnings –alarms and warnings are displayed ineasy-to-understand alphanumeric formeliminating the need for decoding orreferring to long tables in manuals.

All VFD parameters are accessible throughthe keypad. The Quick Menu key offersimmediate access to 12 start-up parameters, including Motor Power, Motor Voltage, MotorNominal Speed, Ramp Up/Down Time, andMinimum/Maximum Frequency. TR1 SeriesVFDs are shipped with application-specificparameters pre-programmed; the QuickMenu allows input of motor nameplate datafor speedy commissioning.

Closed Loop ControlThe TR1 Series VFD includes aProportional, Integral, Derivative (PID)controller with two setpoints and twofeedbacks, a feature not offered anywhereelse in the market. Not only does the built-inPID controller eliminate the need for extra I/O modules to maintain closed loop control, but having two setpoints and feedbacksallows for two-zone regulation.

The TR1 Series VFD built-in PID controllercan greatly improve the efficiency of coolingtower systems. Once the VFD isprogrammed, it can automatically match theVFD’s speed to the air flow requirements.

The built-in PID controller is also useful inpump applications. The TR1 Series VFD,combined with a flowmeter, can measureand regulate flow to accurately maintain agiven rate. The TR1 Series VFD, combinedwith a differential pressure transmitter, canwork with throttling valves to provide moreaccurate control and energy savings.

Trane also offers an optional cascadecontroller for pumps. This add-in boardallows staging up to four additional drivesand/or fixed speed motors. By using the PIDcontroller in the master drive, this canprovide an exceptionally wide range ofefficient control in large pumping systems.

The TR1 Series VFD can also operate inopen loop control mode, where the drivereceives a speed command signal from thebuilding management system. Even in thismode, feedback signals from the controlledsystem can activate warnings on the displayand the building management system.

TR1 Series VFDNetwork Communication

LonWorksLonWorks® is a family of products developedby Echelon Corporation. The protocol isLonTalk®.

Each device on a LonWorks system is anode. Each node must contain an EchelonNeuron® communications chip. This chipabsorbs much of the burden of implementingLonTalk in the communications system.LonWorks supports distributed, peer-to-peercommunications. Each device cancommunicate directly with one anotherwithout a central control system.

Well suited for control at the device level, hundreds of manufacturers of thousands ofdevices now conform to the appropriateLonWorks device standard. Conformance tothe standard is important to ensure trueinteroperability of LonWorks devices.

When LonWorks is specified for the TR1VFD, the LonWorks controllercommunicates through the popular FreeTopology transmission media. Controlling tothe LonMark Functional Profile for VariableSpeed Motor Drives, the TR1 LonWorkscontroller is certified to LonMark version 3.3.LonMark certification is the assurance thatthis product provides the interoperability thatthe LonMark standards demand.

BACnetBACnet is a non-proprietary, open protocolcommunication standard adapted andsupported by the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI), and the American Societyof Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioningEngineers (ASHRAE). No proprietary chipsets or proprietary protocol is used. Anyvendor may develop BACnet components.

BACnet is compatible with the Internetprotocol (IP), allowing BACnet devices to beviewed and controlled with standard webbrowsers. BACnet enables data to be sharedamong the different devices in a BAS, andallows setting of priorities among thedevices. BACnet is compatible with manynetworking standards, including Ethernet,ARCnet, and LonTalk. BACnet can be used atboth at the device level and the system level.

Each TR1 BACLinkTM Portal can control upto ten TR1 VFDs in any mix of sizes. TheBACLink Portal’s NEMA 1 enclosure can bemounted in any convenient location. A 115-volt power source is all that is required.Twisted-pair wiring is suitable for BACnetcommunication.

The BACLink Portal must be pre-programmed at the factory to ensurecompatibility with the communicationsnetwork used in the facility.

MODbus RTU

The MODbus Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)protocol, originated by Modicon Corporation,is an open protocol. MODbus RTU, orsimply MODbus, has many applications bothin HVAC and industry.

Communicating over EIA-485, MODbus is asimple, mature protocol that is relatively easyfor the system analyst to install and configure.

The Trane Tracer SummitTM CommunicationsBridge integrates MODbus devices to aBACnet/Ethernet or BACnet/IP network. This can then be used in conjunction with aTracer Summit PC workstation.

The MODbus RTU capability in the TR1VFD allows the flexibility to communicatedirectly over MODbus, or to easily convert tothe open protocol BACnet to allowcommunication through Trane TracerSummit or other workstations.

Modbus RTU

NETWORKING

Trane Supports OpenCommunicationTR1 Series VFDs support opencommunication. BACnet, LonWorks andMODbus RTU are the three open protocolscommonly used in building automationsystems (BAS). The TR1 VFDs cancommunicate through all of these protocols.

Unlike proprietary systems, open systemsoffer the user maximum flexibility in theselection and integration of both hardwareand software. Changes, additions andupgrades are easily made. The user is nottied to any one source of supply. The usercan integrate components from multiplevendors into flexible, functional systemswithout the need to develop customhardware, software or tools. With properselection, open systems can offer the userinterchangeability of components from onebrand to other.

Trane leverages open systems technologyby integrating components from virtually anyopen systems supplier into a flexible, reliable, functional Trane Comfort System.
