Starr Commonwealth/montCalm SChool for GirlS offers strength-based solutions for families with struggling teens at its boarding school in Van Wert. “We seek to identify the inner strengths of each child,” says Starr Commonwealth Communications Director Dana Jacob. “Then we help the child build on their strengths.” Montcalm and its sister schools are a service of Starr Commonwealth, a nonprofit helping more than 4,000 children, families, and professionals through facilities in Ohio and Michigan.

the Children’S Garden in Van Wert’s Smiley Park is a highly sought-out site. “We educate children about horticulture, arts, and the environment,” says Louise Hartwig, master gardener. Children may visit several themed gardens within the 1-acre site. These include the KAM Manufacturing Butterfly House, Van Wert County Hospital’s Healthy Me Garden, and The Enabling Garden for the handicapped. Among the many other gardens are Sun Dial, Petals and Feathers, and 100 Aker Woods. The garden is open during park hours, free of charge.

the marSh foundation is a residential care facility for children that opened its doors in rural Van Wert in 1922. Executive Secretary and Treasurer Jeff Grothouse says the foundation’s aim is to provide a safe, secure environment for children in need. “We want children to receive the necessary training, instruction, and education for successful reunification with their family,” Grothouse notes. Van Wert entrepreneur George H. Marsh provided the original vision and funding.

BrumBaCk liBrary is one of the most photographed historic structures in northwest Ohio. Located in downtown Van Wert, the library’s expansive lawn enhances the structure’s castle-like appearance. John Sanford Brumback, a Van Wert banker, conceived and financed the Gothic and Romanesque structure. The interior features mosaic tile floors, marble and plaster walls, and a 30-foot decorative ceiling in the reading room. In use for over 100 years, the library is the first in the United States to serve an entire county. The Brumback Library remains a well-utilized and much-loved Van Wert County resource.

The Victorian-era Clark Mansion is the focal point of the Van wert County hiStoriCal SoCiety’S muSeum Park. “The public will see artifacts from Native American days to the present,” says Jeanne Zeigler, Historical Society spokesperson. The museum grounds also feature a carefully restored and maintained 1860s two-story log home, an 1875 courthouse gazebo, a 1906 one-room schoolhouse, a Pennsylvania Railroad caboose, and a barn filled with antique farm machinery. The museum is open on Sundays between March and December in Van Wert.

Chamber ReportThe Van Wert Area Chamber of Commerce

has been aggressively promoting the interests of the business community since 1922. “We strive to partner with businesses to build suc-cess through providing a variety of opportunities for our investors,” said Kate Gribble, Chamber President/CEO. The Chamber fosters a strong business climate by offering a range of benefits to area businesses including networking and publicity outlets, legislative advocacy, signifi-cant member discounts and leadership/profes-sional development programs. This premiere economic development organization continually works with businesses to provide additional tools which encourage growth and success throughout the business sector. Additionally, the Chamber serves as the “front door” of the community as they answer questions about the Van Wert area and assist new residents, tourists and businesses. Economic Development: Services Sector Shines

The director of the Van Wert County Economic Development Group says many niches exist for new businesses in the region, and that help is available for new entrepreneurs.

“There is a need for business people who will provide services such as distri-bution, advertising, logistics, warehous-ing, data collection, and other services to existing industries in the county,” says Economic Development Director Nancy Bowen. “There is a lot of opportunity in the services sector.”

Local economic development agencies have training options for entrepreneurs in

areas such as business planning, cash flow, marketing, financing, and networking.

“Approximately 40 professionals shared their expertise with people interested in opening their own business at a recent entre-preneur fair,” Bowen says.

Downtown Drive: Main Street Van Wert Revs Up Community

Main Street Van Wert helps entrepreneurs find more in common than an address.

A bustling coffee shop, ice cream parlor, furniture stores, and insurance and brokerage offices are just a few of the businesses ben-efiting from the cooperative spirit. The not-for-profit downtown economic development venture has helped 12 businesses open in the district since 2005. Even a wind farm startup is planning to have downtown offices.

The group also promotes architectural restoration. Mike Butler, a second-generation baker, discovered eye-catching antique glass above his front door when he remodeled his late 1800s building. Downtown is also home to historic Balyeats Coffee Shop, a nationally known provider of home-cooked meals since the 1920s.

Main Street provides matching grants to help businesses buy signs, bring buildings up to code, and purchase equipment. The group’s plans for 2009 include installing antique-style street lamps and sidewalks, as well as markers denoting the town as a cross-road on the Abraham Lincoln Highway.

Main Street Van Wert draws 20,000 visitors each June to the “Artrageous On Main” fine arts and crafts fair in downtown Fountain Park.

Innovation Center Allows Affordable Expansion

The owner of a company providing care for home-bound individuals says the Van Wert Innovation Center made it more afford-able to extend services from headquarters in Lima, Ohio, to Van Wert and three other northwest Ohio counties.

“We really needed a satellite office to ser-vice the region,” says Wally Kincaid, owner of Comfort Keepers. “The center helped me get into the area more economically.”

In addition to Comfort Keepers, other businesses located in the center include Flip Tuck Gymnastics Studio and Ultra Computer and Networking Solutions. The Innovation Center partners with Wright State University Business Enterprise Center, Rhodes State College, and Vantage Career Center to pro-vide business startup and management train-ing. The center has 34,000 square feet of warehouse, distribution, and manufacturing space and 7,200 square feet of office space.

Agriculture in the Lead

Van Wert is one of the top agriculture-producing counties in Ohio.

“The county is routinely in or near the top 10 for agriculture production in the state,” says Ohio State University Van Wert County Extension Educator Andy Kleinschmidt. “Ninety percent of Van Wert County is used for farming. Soybeans are the major crop. We have very flat land with few forested areas.”

Farm Focus, an independent agriculture research project based in the county, exports knowledge.

“When asked to place an economic value on the information learned at Farm Focus field days, farmers placed the value at $8,000,” Kleinschmidt notes. Approximately 250 farmers made that estimate after attend-ing a one-day Farm Focus event in 2007.

Olde Fashioned Christmas CelebrationCelebrate the holidays in Van Wert! On the first weekend in December, enjoy a parade,

community worship service, home decorating contest, and a downtown window contest. Every weekend in December brings free carriage rides, Santa visits, and the drive-through Holiday Light Spectacular at the Van Wert County Fairgrounds. In even-numbered years, cel-ebrations are enhanced with a Victorian Christmas Feast at the Van Wert Historical Museum and a presentation of Handel’s Messiah by the First United Methodist Church.
