“Taste the Latin Touch...”

By Rico de La Prensa

After ten years ofcontinuous struggle, ClubTaino achieved its goal ofplacing the Puerto Rican flagwith numerous other flagsadjacent to InternationalPark, across from downtownToledo. It was a mightyceremony, worthy of themighty battle. Its president, RobertoColón, welcomed the crowdthat gathered for this festiveoccasion last Saturday, beginning at 1:00PM.

Club Taino celebrates Puerto Rico’sConstitution Day with flying colors

A poem, written by AntolinFlores and orated by hisdaughter Gladys Flores, wasread prior to the flag raising. The poem commenced,“Dios sabe lo que hace ytodo lo ha hecho muy bien.Hizo un pedazo de Tierra quees mi bella Borinquen.” Aixa Ortiz Vega sang boththe U.S. and Puerto Ricananthems. Entertainment wasprovided by Grupo Fuego(Cleveland), Raices Latinas(Toledo), Fusión Latina, andSammy De León y SuOrquesta (Lorain). Club Taino began almostten years ago to effect thisday. The city of Toledooriginally denied the flag’splacement because, “PuertoRico was a state.” After being educated to itsCommonwealth status andthe procurement of thedemanded $4,000, the flag

was placed with the otherstandards. Others that worked hardfor this day included:Carmen Vega, MaríaGonzález, Gladys Flores,Reylene Medina, AngelitaCruz Bridges, LourdesSantiago, Marlene Pérez,Lily Cardona, CeciliaMéndez, Aixa Ortiz Vega,Ronald Goodall, andnumerous sponsors. Ezra C. Escudero, directorof Ohio’s Commission ofHispanic/Latino Affairs, attended, along with amultitude of dignitaries. Shown above is AixaOrtiz Vega, singing both theU.S. and Puerto Ricananthems. Ortiz Vega is ofMexican and Puerto Ricandescent and has been anaccomplished singer formany years. She works forAdelante, Inc. in SouthToledo.

Latinos in the Toledo/Lucas County area shouldbe very organized and vocalabout this year’s presiden-tial and local elections. Manyimportant decisions will bemade as the economy movesforward or stagnates. Latinosshould have all their issuesand concerns laid out forpoliticians wanting theLatino votes in 2004 and2005.

Latinos & Poverty in OhioAccording to the Na-

tional Center for Children inPoverty 2002, there are80,338 Latino children un-der the age of 18 living inOhio. Of those, 18,666 livein poverty and 79,951 livein households. That does notinclude the 22,112 popula-tion ages 18 to 64 that live inpoverty and an additional1,326 ages 65 and over liv-ing in poverty. 24.4% ofLatinos in Ohio live in pov-erty compared to 10.0% ofnon-Latino Caucasians inOhio living in poverty.

Latinos & Poverty inLucas County

The Lucas County statis-tics reveal there are 8,743Latino children under theage of 18 living in LucasCounty. Of those, 2,553 livein poverty and 8,714 live inhouseholds. This does not

include the 2,157 populationages 18 to 64 that live in pov-erty and an additional 132 ages65 and over living in poverty.29.7% of Latinos in LucasCounty live in poverty com-pared to 10.9% of non-LatinoCaucasians in Lucas Countyliving in poverty.

Latinos & Poverty inToledo

The “Kids Count” censusdata shows that 7,315 Latinochildren under the age of 18live in Toledo. Of those,2,304 live in poverty and7,297 live in households. This does not include the1,945 population ages 18 to64 that live in poverty and anadditional 106 ages 65 andover living in poverty. 31.9%of Latinos in Toledo live inpoverty compared to 14.7%of non-Latino Caucasians inToledo living in poverty.

Home OwnershipAccording to a study re-

leased October 1, 2002 by anational grassroots organiza-tion, “Latinos were deniedconventional mortgages 1.53times more often than non-Latino Caucasians. Locally,Toledo Latinos were rejectedfor mortgages 1.73 times moreoften than were whites, but ayear earlier the figure was1.85.The home ownership ratefor Latinos is 44%, signifi-

cantly lower than Anglos(73%) and the national aver-age (66%).”

Employment“The unemployment rate

for Latinos is significantlyhigher than that of Anglos,9.2% and 5.2% respectively”according to the NationalCouncil of La Raza.

Education According to findings by,

Latino Issues Forum, studieshave shown that educationis directly linked to incomeand economic stability.

Recommendation:As wefind ourselves in the midst ofextreme social, political, em-ployment, and economichardship, we must stop giv-ing away our votes unlessLatinos demand and get aconfluence set of solutionsfrom the next president, county commissioner, etc.

2004 Elections

WASHINGTON (AP),July 22: Democratic presi-dential candidate John Kerryholds a 2-to-1 lead over Presi-dent Bush among Latinos, according to polling thatsuggests Republicans havenot made inroads into a keydemographic group thatthey’ve targeted this elec-tion.

A majority of Latinos, 56percent, said they disapproveof the way Bush is handlingthe war in Iraq.

Kerry and running mateJohn Edwards had the back-ing of 59 percent, while Bushand Vice President DickCheney had 31 percent andindependents Ralph Naderand Peter Camejo had 3 per-cent, according to the pollreleased Thursday by the PewHispanic Center and the Kai-ser Family Foundation.

When voters were askedif they might change theirvote for president, 29 per-cent of those who said theywere not voting for Kerrysaid there was a chance theymight support him. Only 13percent of those not support-ing Bush said there was achance they might back him.

Bush’s job approval rat-ing among Latino voters

was 35 percent, lower than hisjob approval among the gen-eral population in other poll-ing.

In the 2000 election, Demo-crat Al Gore got 62 percent ofthe Latino vote and Bush got35 percent, according to exitpolls. Republicans are aimingto push their Latino support to40 percent this election—agoal GOP strategists have saidis crucial because Latinos arethe country’s fastest-growingminority group.

“Bush’s numbers with His-panics were up from the timeof his inauguration until abouta year ago, but they’ve slipped... significantly now thatthere’s a presumed Democraticnominee,” said Roberto Suro, director of the Pew HispanicCenter. “Now Bush is backwhere he started.”

The battle for Latino voteswill be fought state by state, however, because the candi-dates are competing for eachstate’s electoral votes.

Polling finds different lev-els of support among differentLatino groups. For example,Cuban-Americans were morelikely to support Bush, whileMexican-Americans weremore likely to support Kerry.

Nearly half of Latinos, 45percent, identified themselvesas Democrats. About two in10, 20 percent, said they are

Poll: Latinos back Kerry overBush 2-to-1By WILL LESTERAssociated Press Writer

Republican, and another twoin 10 said they are indepen-dents.

That’s almost an identi-cal party breakdown to simi-lar polls taken in 1999 and2002.

The party identificationwas measured in polling of2,288 Latino adults, includ-ing 1,166 Hispanic regis-tered voters, from April 21 toJune 9. The random sampleincluded those who said theywere of Latino origin.

The head-to-headmatchup of Bush and Kerrywas from a poll taken July12-20 of 788 Latino regis-tered voters.

The margin of samplingerror for both polls of regis-tered voters was plus or mi-nus 4 percentage points. Themargin of error for the in-depth adult sample was plusor minus 3 percentage points.

The Labor Departmentsigned agreements July 21with México pledging toimprove compliance withU.S. labor laws and increasesafety for Latino workers inthe United States.

The declaration did notinclude additional fundingor an increase in inspectionsand enforcement.

Department and Mexicangovernment officials saidthey will build on existinginitiatives aimed at reachingout to employers and Span-ish-speaking workers to edu-cate them about their rightsand obligations.

The agreement and aLatino safety and health con-ference Thursday in Orlando,Florida, follow reports by TheAssociated Press that thedeath toll for Mexican-bornworkers has soared, with onedying every day on averagein the United States, basedon federal statistics.

In the mid-1990s, Mexi-cans working in the United

States were about 30 percentmore likely to die than U.S.-born workers; in 2002, theywere about 80 percent morelikely. Experts say the popula-tion is hard to reach, and theyoften take the most hazardousjobs with the least safety train-ing and equipment.

Though criminal prosecu-tion of employers is rare, it doeshappen. In one California case, for example, a Merced Countydairy owner faces trial on in-voluntary manslaughtercharges after two of his Mexi-can-born workers drowned af-ter being overcome by fumesfrom liquid cow manure.

On Tuesday, opening state-ments in Patrick Faria’s casewere scheduled for Sept. 13.

“This administration is com-mitted to ensuring that (Mexi-can workers) are safe on the joband fully and fairly compen-sated for their work,” said Labor

Labor Department, México pledge toimprove safety of Latino workers in EE.UU.

Secretary Elaine Chao, whosigned the agreement withMéxico’s foreign affairs sec-retary, Luis Ernesto Derbez.“These agreements willbuild on thisadministration’s unprec-edented joint outreach pro-gram with the Mexican Em-bassy and its consulates inthe United States.”

The department’s Oc-cupational Safety andHealth Administration andthe Wage and Hour Divi-sion will develop safetytraining programs target-ing industries with a largenumber of Latino workers. If funds are available, thedepartment will developnew safety public serviceannouncements and createvideos and posters, and willpublicize and distributeexisting materials and re-sources.

Last week, Democrats con-demned a vote by the HouseAppropriations Committee toretain a Republican amend-ment to an appropriations billthat would restrict the use ofthe Mexican Consulate’s iden-tification card, the MatrículaConsular.

Republican CongressmanJohn Culberson of Texas in-serted the provision restrict-ing Matrícula Consular cardslast week in subcommittee. Democratic Congressman EdPastor of Arizona followed byintroducing an amendment tostrike the Culberson provisionat a meeting of the full Appro-priations Committee. Theamendment failed by a vote of26 to 25, with all but two Demo-crats voting for Rep. Pastor’samendment.

“I am outraged that theRepublican majority has ap-proved this offensive provi-sion that would restrict the useof the Matrícula Consularcards” House DemocraticLeader Nancy Pelosi said. “TheMatrícula Consular allowsmany Mexican immigrants toopen bank accounts and par-ticipate in other activities forwhich they pay taxes and con-tribute to the Americaneconomy.

“This is the latest in a seriesof Republican actions tobring to the floor extreme anti-immigrant measures, many of

which have the potential tojeopardize our homeland se-curity.”

The matrícula consular isinternationally recognized asa valid form of identification, much like the consular regis-tration issued by the U.S. StateDepartment to U.S. citizens liv-ing abroad. Several state andlocal governments, includingpolice departments, and morethan 120 financial institutionsin the U.S already recognize it.Several of these financial in-stitutions as well as the Trea-sury Department, wrote lettersto the House AppropriationsCommittee opposing theCulberson amendment.

The vote is the latest in aseries of measures brought byRepublicans in Congress thisyear that have a clear anti-im-migrant agenda. These mea-sures would have the potentialof endangering national secu-rity. Congressman TomTancredo (R-CO) has repeat-edly introduced measures thatwould withhold federal home-land security funds to citiesand states that refuse to endproven community basedsafety policies. Another billbrought by Congressman DanaRohrabacher (R-CA) wouldhave mandated that hospitals,as a condition of receiving fed-eral funds, violate medical eth-ics and compromise publichealth by requiring that immi-

gration status be determinedprior to providing medical ser-vices. With the support ofDemocrats, the Tancredo andRohrabacher legislation weredefeated.

“The AppropriationsCommittee’s refusal to removethe Culberson anti-matriculaconsular language has effec-tively stripped law enforce-ment officials of the tools theyneed to protect American citi-zens and to identify individu-als for law enforcement pur-poses. The Culberson lan-guage remains foolhardy,”Congressman Rubén Hinojosa(D-TX) said. “I intend to workhard to remove it from theTransportation Appropria-tions bill.”

Welcome to Mija Magazine or should Isay welcome home!

Hello all my Mijas out there, this is sucha great moment for me and I hope you aswell.

Finally, there is an online magazine thatcaters to the “real” Latin woman.

I don’t mean to down anyone, but let’s sit back and think aboutsomething real quick …where else can you find a website that highlightsupcoming plus size models, does a mini-documentary on a transgenderwoman, read poetry, find the current issues that Latina’s are dealing within the capitol, find recipes, beauty tips, register to vote, hear snippets ofUnivision’s Music’s top Latina rapper, while not turning on thetelevision once? My answer is nowhere!

As much as I love to read magazines and watch TV, after a while, this industry façade gets sickening. I see that the mainstream has a trinityjust like Christians have the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit…it is sex,make-up, and money!

YOU CAUGHT ME! I am not the poster child for the next big thing, but if I can promote a Latin woman to keep on pushing to reach her goalas the “next big thing” than I have achieved something.

I didn’t start this magazine to make money. I started it to help womenlike us; everyday women that do extraordinary things and are not beingrecognized or don’t have the necessary resources to accomplish whatwe are driven to do.

People have doubted my effort towards Mija, but just like a childgoing through life’s beautiful changes; Mija Magazine will develop andgrow into one of the webs greatest resources for Latina promotion, empowerment, and education.

Companies will see such an expansion of need that they will haveto reinvest back into what really matters and that is us…..Mijas!

Raices Latinas is aninternational cultural dancegroup of 38 dancers betweenthe ages of five and 21, whodedicate themselves to

Raices Latinas, an expansive and exquisite dance troupepreserving their culture byway of dancing: danza, plena, bomba, seis chorreao, merengue, bachata, andsalsa. They also have an undyingmission to introduce/reintroduce the variousdances of Puerto Rico to theLatino/a youth of Lorain. “We say Hispanic youthbecause we want Latinos toexpress an interest in theirown culture, but our groupwelcomes any child that isinterested in learning thedances, no matter what racial

background they comefrom.” Velez stated. Raises has one AfricanAmerican, one autistic, andone deaf member of thegroup, which is one of itsbetter dancers. “He just goesby movement; it’s reallyimpressive.” says Velez. Raices Latinas currentlyholds 38 members—20 girlsand 18 boys. The group isseparated into three sectionsby age: group one ages 5-8,group two 9-11, and groupthree 12 –21 years of age. Danny Contreras, indepen-dent candidate for LucasCounty Sheriff, has becomethe second Latino member ofthe Toledo PoliceDepartment’s Retired SeniorVolunteer Patrol (RSVP) pro-gram.

Contreras took time outfrom his hectic campaignschedule to complete the train-ing course and graduated onJune 25, said Sgt. NarcisoGómez, who oversees the pro-gram for the policedepartment’s Community Ser-vice Section from the ScottPark District Station.

The RSVP program waslaunched in Toledo in Sept.2000. The Toledo Police De-partment formed a partnershipwith the Area Office on Agingof Northwestern Ohio, Inc., toassist with recruitment andtraining.

“There are 51 volunteers inthe program,” said Sgt. Gómez.“They receive training in CPR,how to call 911, and how tonotify the police during theone-week training session. Weteach them about the depart-ment structure and crime scenemanagement. When theygraduate, they are issued a pic-ture ID and a distinctive ma-roon-colored uniform.”

Gómez said there are now“two male Hispanics” in theprogram with Contreras beingthe second member.

He said the program origi-nally began in San Diego,California.

How does the departmentget the message out to seniors? Gómez says he goes to eventslike Senior Day at the LucasCounty Rec Center as well ashealth and church fairs andsets up an information table. But many of the volunteers aswell as the clients hear aboutRSVP by word of mouth.

There are two cars assignedto the program and the volun-teers go out in pairs. “The cityis split into North and Southfor purposes of the project, andthe volunteers are out on thestreets every day Monday toFriday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.,”said Gómez, who has been amember of the Toledo PoliceDepartment since 1983. Bornand raised on Sumner Street,he was the neighborhood ser-geant for the South Side, work-ing out of the Aurora L.Gonzalez Community Centerand Heritage South. He hasbeen with the Community Ser-vices Division since 1995.

Gómez said the RSVP pro-gram members will check onthe houses of people while theyare on vacation. He creditedthe vigilance and quick think-ing of RSVP volunteers who inApril checked on the condi-tion of a senior who did notrespond when they knocked

on his door and found that theman had fallen down. “If itwere not for their visit, therecould have been a possibletragedy,” said Gómez.

Officer Anita Madisonhelps coordinate the programwith Gómez, her commandofficer. She told La Prensa thatRSVP clients can include se-niors who live alone (includ-ing couples), seniors who arehome alone while family mem-bers work, and anyone who ishomebound and at-risk.

“The RSVP program mem-bers do not perform any policefunctions, but they providecompanionship,” said Madi-son. “They will spend 15 to 20minutes with each senior andsee between six and eight se-niors each day. They will talkto the seniors and if necessarymake referrals to social agen-cies. They will get with a po-lice officer and help link thesenior to whatever service theymight need.”

She said there is also a Vistavolunteer who also works withthe program.

Madison said clients andvolunteers could contactRSVP at (419) 936-3730, or

visit their Web site atwww.toledopolice.com

Applications for volun-teers are always accepted andvolunteers will be contactedbeginning in January and thenext graduating class will beassembled for June 2005. Vol-

unteers must be 50 or older, have a valid Drivers License, satisfactorily complete a re-quired criminal backgroundcheck and the required train-ing, and commit to serving aminimum of 12 hours permonth.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP):The Ohio State Fair has tradi-tionally been as “NorthAmerican” as apple pie-on-a-stick.

This year, fair officialshave increased their market-ing efforts toward a commu-nity that might identify morewith the traditions of othercountries—the state’sLatino population.

Latinos are the nation’sfastest-growing minoritygroup, and their Ohio popu-lation grew 4.4 percent be-tween 2000 and 2002, ac-cording to Census data. Theynow number about 230,000,or 2 percent of the state’spopulation.

Fair spokeswoman Chris-tina Minier said there aremore events on the Aug. 4-15 schedule this year gearedtoward that community.

Aztec and other dance musicAug. 14 on the Main StreetStage. That and the Aug. 8concert by Latina artist Jenni-fer Peña are outreach efforts tothe Latino community, Miniersaid.

“It’s an effort to attract thosecommunities to the fair and toalso educate fair-goers aboutthose cultures,” she said.

Phillip Barbosa, a commis-sioner with the state’s Com-mission on Hispanic/LatinoAffairs, said the first “FiestaOhio” event last year was asuccess for the community. Thecommission participated andplans to do so again, he added.

Barbosa said many Latinofamilies identify with eventsat the fair.

“It’s more cost-effective fora lot of families than a visit to

Cedar Point,” he said. “ManyHispanics tend to be workingin agriculture on some levelor another, and it brings themtogether to see what they’vebeen producing.”

Minier said “Fiesta Ohio”will remain on the fair sched-ule annually with one addi-tional rotating event to cel-ebrate different cultures eachyear.

This year it’s the AfricanFest on Aug. 7, featuring WestAfrican and masqueradedancers and African Reggae.Last year’s fair had an eventcalled “Passport to Asia.”

Ohio families have justtwo weekends to visit the statefair this year—the 12-dayschedule is the shortest theevent has been in almost 30years.

Answers for Living the Last Months of Life

For my family, the answer

was right in our own home.

“When my father, Marcelino, found out he had a

terminal illness, he insisted on spending his final

months at home. He didn’t want to even think about

being anywhere else.

“My family wanted to have Papi stay home, too. We

believe in taking care of our own.

“Hospice of Northwest Ohio made it possible by

sending us doctors, nurses, aides and social workers

– plus coordinating his medicines and equipment.

Hospice responded to our every needand kept my father feeling good enough to enjoy many

visits with our big family.

“Papi’s final wish was to return to his original home,

Puerto Rico, for his last days. Hospice of Northwest

Ohio arranged to transfer him to a hospice program

there, where he passed away in peace. For me and my

family, the compassion of Hospice really hits home.”
