DFCon 2013 Conference Co-Chairmen George Andros, MD, and David G.Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, are pleased to announce that the Edward James OlmosAward for Advocacy in Amputation Prevention Honoree for 2013 is Lawrence B.Harkless, DPM.
Dr. Harkless, Founding Dean and Professor of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery atthe College of Podiatric Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences inPomona, CA, has taught and mentored thousands of podiatric students, residents and
interns. He is widely viewed as a leading pioneer in integrating podiatric medicine into mainstream medicine. For three decades, Dr. Harkless directed the podiatric residency program at the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he earned an international reputation as a leading expert ondiabetes and the diabetic foot. He was the Louis T. Bogy Professor of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. Whileat UTHSCSA Dr. Harkless in 1985 founded one of the first symposia on the diabetic foot, Diabetic FootUpdate, which promoted a team approach to diabetic foot care. In 2007, Dr. Harkless accepted a newchallenge as founding dean of the Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine. Thenew podiatry college opened in 2009.
Dr. Harkless established the Foot Care Council for the American Diabetes Association and served as itsfirst Chair. He was named the ADA’s Diabetic Educator of the Year in 2001 and has received many otherhonors and awards, including in 2008 the Distinguished Achievement Award in Diabetic Limb Salvage fromMedStar Georgetown University Hospital DLS Conference.
Dr. Harkless is the author or co-author of several textbooks on foot care, including Handbook ofCommon Foot Problems and Foot and Ankle Secrets. He also has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in professional journals.
A graduate of the University of North Texas and the California College of Podiatric Medicine in SanFrancisco, Dr. Harkless completed his internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at SanAntonio and his residency in podiatric surgery at Atlanta Hospital and Medical Center in Atlanta.
Dr. Harkless and his wife of more than 30 years, Gerry, have two children.

COURSE DESCRIPTION DFCon 2013 is the premier international interdisciplinary diabetic foot conference inNorth America. This year’s conference is joint sponsored by Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Ciné-Med® and InternationalConference Management, Inc. It features the presentation of the 10th Annual Edward James Olmos Award forAdvocacy in Amputation Prevention. The course is designed for the wide spectrum of generalists and specialists whodiagnose and manage the diabetic foot. It will delve into diagnostic and interventional strategies for diabetic foot ulcersand amputation prevention. Featuring a world-renowned faculty, it offers the opportunity to review state-of-the-art concepts and techniques.
CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES At the end of the activity, attendees will be able to: ✲ List key risk factors associatedwith ulceration and amputation. ✲ Discuss the importance of appropriate vascular interventions and their regional andethnic variations in diabetic foot care. ✲ Recognize the growing importance of the diabetic foot as an internationalhealthcare problem. ✲ Discuss the role of various technologies and their impact on healing and preventing diabetic footwounds. ✲ Outline the appropriate use of various shoes, insoles and braces in foot care. ✲ Outline the basics ofappropriate antibiotic care of the infected diabetic foot. ✲ Discuss the complexities of the microenvironment of thediabetic foot wound. ✲ Cite the fiscal and social impact of diabetic foot ulcers and amputation.
ACCREDITATION This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas andpolicies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of Ciné-Med®,Valley Presbyterian Hospital and International Conference Management.
