Dear Friends,Welcome to the 2012 Jewish Book & Cultural Arts Fair presented by ARTÉ Retirement Resort! What better way to be enlightened, learn, entertained and connect to the Jewish culture than through the arts. As we are developing the strategic vision for the Jewish Community Association and how the VOSJCC helps us achieve that vision; Jewish arts and humanities will play a critical role. The Jewish culture, religion and community are kept strong and broadly connected through conversation. The arts and humanities are what stimulates and creates much of this conversation and it also is what engages it over the widest spectrum of the Jewish and broader community.

I look forward to seeing you at the many events during this 18 day fair. Invite all of your family and friends to come enjoy, laugh, learn and be inspired.

Stuart Wachs, President & CEOJewish Community Association of Greater PhoenixValley of the Sun Jewish Community Center

Jewish Book & Cultural Arts FairNew Eyes: A One Woman Play Starring Yafit Josephson

October 29 | 7 pm New Eyes made its debut in Los Angeles in 2010 and has been a smash-hit playing with rave reviews to sold out audiences for the past 2 years. It tells the true story of Yafit Josephson, a young woman living in Israel who

joins the Israeli army to serve heroically for her country. Upon completing her service, she moves to Los Angeles to follow her dream of becoming an actress but finds

herself constantly cast only as a Middle Eastern villain. Just as her native country wrestles with the world’s false perceptions, Yafit must decide how far she is willing

to go to challenge, change, or accept how others see her and what she is willing to risk to fulfill her dreams and destiny. New Eyes explores universal themes of self-esteem, family, identity and cultural differences. Yafit Josephson portrays over 18 characters from over 5 different countries as she conveys her riveting and uplifting story.

Community Read & Coffee TalkRoberta Rich Midwife of VeniceTuesday, November 6 10:30 amBook discussion with author, coffee and snacks.Hannah Levi is renowned throughout Venice for coaxing reluctant babies from their mothers’ bellies, aided by the secret “birthing spoons” she designed. The Midwife of Venice unfolds when a wealthy count implores Hannah to attend to his wife, who has been laboring for days to give birth to their firstborn son. Hannah is conflicted. A Papal

edict forbids Jews from rendering medical treatment to Christians, but the payment he offers is enough to ransom her beloved husband, Isaac, who has been captured at sea. Can Hannah refuse to help a suffering woman? Hannah’s dilemma pits her against a treacherous family that endangers both the baby and her voyage to Malta, where Isaac, believing her dead in the plague, is preparing to buy his passage to a new life.

Not since The Red Tent or People of the Book has a novel transported readers so intimately into the complex lives of women centuries ago or so richly into a story of intrigue that transcends the boundaries of history. Readers will devour Roberta Rich’s The Midwife of Venice and stay closely alongside Hannah Levi to see her future unfold.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Roberta Rich was until recently a lawyer practicing family law. She has also been a student, waitress, nurses’ aide, hospital admitting clerk and factory assembly line worker. She currently divides her time between Vancouver, B.C. and Colima, Mexico. She is married and has one daughter, three step-children, a German Shepherd, tropical fish and many oversexed parakeets. The Midwife of Venice marks her debut as a novelist.Read this book in advance and bring your book club. Books available for sale now in the JCC lobby!

A Sweet Taste of...Stanley Ginsberg Inside the Jewish Bakery: Recipes and Memories from the Golden Age of Jewish BakingThursday, November 8 | 3 pm Coffee & refreshments servedJoin us for a taste of traditional Eastern European Jewish baking. Young generations of American Jews are becoming increasingly assimilated into mainstream society. Small, family-run Jewish bakeries that once lay at the heart of their

communities have fallen victim to the demise of the old-school bakers, shifting demographics and the large corporate food processors.

Inside the Jewish Bakery: Recipes and Memories from the Golden Age of Jewish Baking chronicles the history and traditions—as well as the distinctive baked goods—of Ashkenazi Jewry in Eastern Europe and America. He uses sources as diverse as the Talmud, Sholom Aleichem and the yizkor books that memorialize communities destroyed in the Holocaust.

Stanley Ginsberg, a Brooklyn native, grew up in a close-knit Yiddish - Italian neighborhood where generations lived side-by-side and everything was in walking distance. Stanley began baking in the 60’s as a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Ph.D. in classical Chinese literature. One of his great moments occurred in 1971, when his grandmother, an exceptional cook and baker, pronounced his challah as good as any she’d ever eaten. His baking repertoire is eclectic, with a bias toward traditional Yiddish breads and rolls, sweet yeast breads, coffeecakes and European-style artisan breads.Let’s keep history alive! Send us your favorite Jewish bakery recipe and it’s memory. It must be sent as an email to [email protected] in a word document in a form that can be easily printed no LATER than October 31. No hand written recipes or late submissions accepted. These recipes will then be printed and shared at this event!

Event is made possible through funding by the Ted Barkin Family Endowment Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation.

Amy Ephron | Loose Diamonds...and other things I’ve lost (and found) along the wayFriday, November 9 |11 amFour years ago, Amy Ephron came home to find that every single piece of jewelry she owned was gone – taken by a burglar that was responsible for an epidemic of millions of dollars of stolen jewelry across Los Angeles. Missing from Amy’s jewelry box were the gold stud earrings that her mother had given her when her ears were first pieced, a

1920’s marcasite and crystal bracelet and so much more. While Amy realized that her jewelry could not be replaced, she came to realize that its value lay in the memories associated with the it and not the jewelry itself.

These memories spurred more memories and soon Amy began to write. What she formed was a series of essays titled Loose Diamonds that cover the odd, funny, distressing (and everything-in-between) events in her life. Throughout Loose Diamonds. Amy Ephron celebrates these memories, her friendships, as well as her romances and marriages and the things that make life livable. She writes unflinchingly about the fragility and tenuousness of life, how fortune can turn on a dime and circumstances aren’t always in our control. She explores the enduring effects of parental wisdom, the complications and rewards that marriage can bring and the intricate ups and downs of friendships—all with a quick wit and a delicate eye.

Amy Ephron is a bestselling and award-winning novelist. She writes a monthly column “L.A. POV” for the New York Times’ on-line. Her magazine pieces and essays have appeared in Vogue, The New York Times’ Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, The Daily Beast, House Beautiful, the Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post and her own online magazine, One for the Table and various print and online publications. She directed a short film Chloe@3AM which was featured by the American Cinematheque at the Womens’ Directors Festival in January 2011. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband Alan Rader and any of their five children who drop in.Reservations for this luncheon MUST be made by November 2. Co-sponsored by Women’s Philanthropy of the JCA and Brandeis National Committee.

Jewish Book & Cultural Arts FairYiddish Between Two Wars

Dr. Adina Bar-ElTuesday, November 13 | 7:30 pmAdina Bar El, author and researcher, was born in 1946 in Tel Aviv, Israel and is now a member of Moshav Nir Israel in Hof Ashkelon. She published 16 books for children

and youth, a book of poetry and two books of non-fiction research. Adina serves as head of the Somalion Association of authors of books for children and youth. She is a lecturer at Achva teachers’ college, an editor and a literary critic. As a daughter of holocaust survivors she was drawn to write her PhD thesis on Yiddish and Hebrew Literature from the period between the two world wars and she has become a renowned expert on this topic. Adina lectures around the world on the topics of Jewish children periodicals between the wars, Jewish education in Poland, her personal story as a daughter of survivors and her experiences as an author.

Adina Bar El’s is visit to Phoenix is one of many TIPS people-to-people programs.

TIPS Partnership- The Jewish Agency’s (JAFI) Partnership2Gether platform has become the paradigm for successfully partnering global Jewish communities directly with Israeli communities. Since 1995, three American communities (Tucson, Phoenix and Seattle) have been matched with two Israeli communities: the development city of Kiryat Malachi and the regional council of Hof Ashkelon. This partnership is a reciprocal relationship in which the Jewish Community Association of Greater Phoenix supports programs that empower and build leadership in the Israeli communities and enhance the connection between Israel and Phoenix by promoting people-to-people relationships.

Before a CanyonJeremy Tucker with Victor VillaneuvaMonday, November 12 | 7 pmTucker’s memoir, Before a Canyon, is set over the 1997-’98 school year at an inner-city Phoenix middle school. Tucker was on a two-year deferral from medical school so he could be a Teach for America Corps instructor. Victor Villaneuva was a 12-year-old student in Tucker’s homeroom and his reading and math classes.

“I remember his first day. I assigned him a seat. Unbeknownst to me, the

boy got out of his seat and was mimicking me behind my back. I thought the kids were smiling at what I was presenting. So, I checked my zipper to make sure it was up. I turned around, and there was Victor, standing behind me looking all-sweet. Rather than get angry, I was impressed that he would do that the first day. Of course, I was frustrated he would do something like that. But, it was kind of humorous.”

From there, Before a Canyon chronicles the deepening relationship between Tucker and his student. At one point, Victor’s mom urges Tucker to adopt her son, “to save him.” It is one of the few places in Tucker’s book where he probes his own feelings as deeply as he has written about Victor. Victor is now 25, married, with kids of his own.

What makes the completion of this book even more interesting is that in 2004, Tucker went from new doctor, a resident at Baylor in pediatrics, to patient after he was diagnosed with medulloblastoma – a brain cancer. Tucker underwent surgery that left him severely impaired physically, but mentally intact. Tucker is in his fifth year of recovery, his medical career is on hold, but he keeps busy writing, and also tutoring Kipp Academy Sunnyside students. Since he was an English major at Yale, he assists students with their college essays and encourages them to tell about the obstacles they have overcome. He is also keeping busy with research and preparing another book on creative writing.Co-sponsored by Temple Solel, NFTY Southwest Region, BBYO and Jewish Youth Alliance

Twenty-five years after his high school graduation, David Halpert returns to Detroit, a place that he and most of the people he grew up with fled long ago. At first, everything seems different and not for the better. David’s mother has developed Alzheimer’s and his normally stoic

father pleads with him to move back to Michigan to help. David doesn’t have anything left in Detroit besides his parents, but by leaving Colorado he might be able to start moving on from the tragic death of his young son four years earlier and his subsequent divorce.

Once back in Detroit, David spots a newspaper story reporting that his high school sweetheart, Natalie and her black half-brother have been shot and killed. This terrible catalyst begins David’s journey through Detroit’s white suburbs and black inner city as he and Natalie’s sister Carolyn reconnect, find solace in each other and try to make sense of the mystery behind the murders.
