Motivation

Current rates of detection of developmental disorders in primary care are lower than their real incidence.

Early identification of children with such disorders should be a priority

Council on Children With Disabilities, 2006.

Language disorders are the first symptoms of a possible developmental disorder

J. Narbona, et al. , 2003.

Identify the disorder in the first stages Provide a proper medical treatment

However… No optimal methods for screening of speech

and language delay have still been identified.

Screening is practiced in an inconsistent way in primary care.

Could ICT provide pediatricians with an effective tool to improve early detection in primary care?

H.D. Nelson, et. al, “Screening for speech and language delay in preschool children: Systematicevidence review for the US preventive services task force”, Pediatrics, vol. 117, 2006, pp. 298-319.

Research Goals

I. To build a tool for intelligent healthcare in primary care Pediatricians may get assisted in the process of

early referral of language disorders

II. To build a Knowledge Base for smart screening of language disorders

III. To validate the KB through proven real cases of children with language disorders

Other results

▸ The final KB has 136 questions: 1 to 72 months Extension to original Denver test

Alert Milestones that imply bringing forward the visit Alarm Milestones that imply referral to the specialist

Age – Milestone Question to be answered by pediatrician System decision

1 month - Alarm Reacts to a bell Send to specialist to check hearing

1 month - Alarm Vocalizes without crying Send to specialist to check hearing

2 months - Alert Emits “OOO/AAH” Bring forward visit (three months)

Conclusions

▸ Innovative smart solution to assist pediatricians in detecting language disorders.

▸ A easy-way to interact with the system through an Open Web application.

▸ The involvement of 4 experts allowed to defining the problem and selecting significant 21 real proven cases.– A deeper validation of the KB is planned to be carried

out with the 39 cases available in the LIC
