Celebrating Edvard Grieg

June is the month to pay homage to Norway’s most revered com-poser, Edvard Grieg, who was born in Bergen on June 15, 1843, in the Grieg’s family home. Here are a few notable facts

about the composer culled from The Grieg Museum’s web-site.*

Grieg’s most famous compositions include Piano Con-certo in a minor, incidental music for Ibsen’s drama “Peer Gynt” (Morning Mood, In the Hall of the Moun-tain King, Solveig’s Song a.o.), Lyric Pieces for piano, Holberg Suite, Last Spring

He grew up in a successful merchant family, together with his brother John (born 1840) and his sisters Maren (born 1837), Ingeborg Benedicte (born 1838) and Elisa-beth (born 1845). Very early he showed a strong interest in music and for the piano as instrument. He could sit at the piano for hours, exploring all kinds of tunes on his own.

During his early school years in Bergen, Edvard wasn’t the most disciplined pupil. He preferred to discover the music himself. Instead of the compulsory etudes, he pre-ferred to improvise and play new tunes and melodies. However, despite the certain amount of reluctance, his love for music grew into what was to become, in his in-nermost spirit, the right thing to do in life – to be an art-ist.

Edvard Grieg studied at the music conservatory in Leip-zig, Germany. This conservatory was founded in 1843 by Felix Mendelsohn, and was reckoned to be the best and most modern conservatory in Europe. His teachers in Leipzig were some of the best pedagogues in Europe: Ignaz Moscheles in piano, Carl Reinecke in composition and Moritz Hauptmann, for whom Edvard Grieg had the greatest respect. He graduated from the conservatory with excellent marks in 1862.

An extensive touring schedule with innumerable con-certs, combined with a weak health condition, was to put an end to Grieg’s life. In September 1907 Grieg became seriously ill and was hospitalized in Bergen, where he died on Sept. 4, 1907, of chronic exhaustion.

LOV Notes May 2017 Next Meeting: June 3, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at Denny’s Restaurant in Fletcher Hills Hostesses: Tam Stautland and Thelma Johannesen.

The month of May can be merry or grey. It’s a time to celebrate Moms, Cinco de Mayo and Norwegian Con-stitution Day. For us of Norwegian descent, this spe-cial day turns into a month-long celebration that in-cludes comfort food, cultural traditions and great com-pany. I hope that you and yours had a chance to enjoy the norsk! As you will read in the minutes of our May LOV meeting, we continued with poetry and prose, learning more fun facts about each other and discussing the topic of Spring. Many folks think of Spring as a gentle time of renewal, but if you grew up in Minnesota, like Sandra, it’s the time for muddy, impassable roads and dirty melting snow, NOT your favorite season. You will also read in the minutes that we have several projects in the works, from gathering items to sell at our Lille Buttiken in November to a cookbook, com-piled from submissions from our members. I have had no responses from our advertisement for the girl’s bunad and the boy’s vest so they are both still availa-ble. I purchased the adult bunad for my daughter, Whitney. June will be our last breakfast meeting before we break for July and August but we will have a potluck luncheon on Wednesday August 9 at Girl Scouts Bal-boa Campus in the historic Florence Burnham Hall. We may also have some special guests…more later. Whitney and I gained appreciation for those brave souls who wear bunads in May… in sunny San Die-go…she was sweating in hers at the lodge dinner, but she wore it proudly. Ja, vi elsker dette landet!

Hilsen, Myla

Barnas Klubb Activity How to make a Viking Journal A 6# brown paper bag, crumpled and rubbed with per-manent ink stamp pads, looks like aged leather for the cover of your journal. Cut 8 ½ X 11” paper in half to make pages of the journal. Fold in half as shown in the photo and punch holes at the fold. Thread raffia or yarn to hold it together. CALL TO ORDER: Richard Hausvik, substituting for Susan Cody, called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: The minutes of the April Lodge Meet-ing and Board Meeting were accepted as printed in the May Valhall Viking, No. 4. COMMITTEE AND DIRECTOR REPORTS: Membership: Aprell Bigler reported that she received one new online ap-plication, from Bjorg Daley. She has been mailed Valhall literature and invited to come to our meetings and socials. Social: (1) Judy reported that April was a quiet month, with just a lodge meeting. Marc Schaefer is in charge of the 17th May social, so she let him fill us in on May’s events. (2) Marc reported that the Mannskor will perform for us at the Syttende Mai Social on May 20. The meal will be open-faced sandwiches and tradi-tional pølse (hot dogs). We are using a caterer this year, who assures us they can make the sandwiches exactly as we want them. (3) Marc reminded us of other festivi-ties at Balboa Park, the Sunday lawn program on May 14 and 9AM flag raising and breakfast at Sefton Plaza on the 17th. Publicity: (1) Marc told us that there will be a proclamation from the Mayor declaring May 17 “Norway Day” in San Diego. This honors all the local Norwegian organizations, including our lodge. (2) Sandra Yeaman wondered if we should pay a $3 fee to Facebook for additional publicity for Valhall Lodge. There was some discussion and Marc said he would create the event on Facebook. A motion to pay the $3 fee for Facebook publicity was made by Jim Adams and seconded by

Sandra Yeaman. The motion was passed.

Youth: Myla is ready with a Viking bracelet activity for the Syttende Mai Social.

Corporation: (1) Allen reported that the Corporation held their meeting prior to the lodge meeting where they discussed the $1000 of proposed do-nations; $500 to Mannskor, $250 to Camp Norge and $250 to Sons of Norway Foundation. This proposal was presented to the lodge members and Marc Schaefer made a motion to approve these donations, it was se-conded by Steve Rawlinson. The mo-tion was passed. (2) Rick added that the piggy will be passed around after the meeting. A $20 contribution has been made to the Foundation from recent piggy contri-butions. FINANCIAL REPORTS: Treasurer: Millie Wright read the treasurer’s report of our bank balanc-es. She made a transfer of $7000 from checking to savings account in order to earn interest.

Financial: Aprell Bigler read the fi-nancial report.

AWARDS: Membership Pins: 10 year pins were presented to Arnette Scherl and An-dreas Ueland. Congratulations to both!

Recruitment Awards for 2016: Bronze recruitment pins were present-ed to: Allen Johannesen, Aprell Bigler, Cheryl Edwards, Sven Olsen, Ragnhild Amble, James Adams, Jacqueline Adams and Helen Johnson. Thank you to all. OLD BUSINESS: (1) Rick is finishing up the recently updated By-laws. They will be pat-terned after Vinland Lodge’s laws. By-laws are common to area lodges. (2) Standing rules are also being up-dated. Several changes were made at the board meeting but Rick realized a few more need to be changed. Stand-ing rules are unique to each lodge and deal with details such as date, time and day of meetings, charges for so-cials and other rules pertaining to our lodge. Additional changes will be discussed and approved at the July board meeting. (3) Rick reminded us that we still need a Vice President. Susan has put in a lot of years as President, and she would love to have a Vice President who would ultimately become Presi-dent. Rick will help as much as he can but in the near future he will be relo-cating to South Dakota for part of the

year. He and Sven are filling in for Susan for a few meetings as she has a conflict with the practices for her San Diego Follies show being at the same time as our meetings. REMARKS FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER: (1) Rick reported good news, we have filled one of the vacant positions in the lodge: Janet Kylstad Coulon has vol-unteered to be Historian for the lodge. Thank you Janet! Regarding the li-brarian position, for now books can be checked out on the “honor system” and we don’t need to have a librarian. (2) Jim Adams reported that he visited Sven and Joyce Olsen, Joyce is home now and doing better. (3) Jim Adams reported that he will be in charge of procuring the lutefisk this year and he is planning to get it from a Midwestern source. He will also be taking a trip and touring the Lefse fac-tory in Blair, Wisconsin. ADJOURNMENT: The next social will be May 20, and the next lodge meeting will be June 5. There were 22 members present and the lodge meeting was adjourned at 7:39 PM. Respectfully submitted by: Janet Weber Secretary Valhall Lodge #6-25

San Diego Mannskor The San Diego Mannskor once again provided delightful entertain-ment at Valhall’s Syttende mai celebration on May 20. Pictured above are some of the members. If you would like to enjoy more of their music, there is another opportunity this month. . The Mannskor has been busy preparing for the Sangarfest 2017, a yearly Grand Concert by the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers Asso-ciation. The choir will have approximately 100 voices from all over the West Coast! The Grand Concerts perform in different locales every year, and this year it will be in San Diego this June 24th.. Find out more about it on page 15 of this newsletter

Two Students from Norway Two students from Norway, Cathrine Skreiberg and her friend Guro Snerting, are doing their internship in San Diego from October 9th to the 27th at Colonel Salomon preschool in San Diego. They are looking for a place to stay, and that is why they are reach-ing out to our lodge for help. They are wondering if we know some one they could ask for further help, or if anyone knows of a place that they could take a closer look at? They are hoping to find a family they can stay with so they can get to know the culture and share their culture. They are willing to pay for their stay and hopefully share some home cooked meals together. Any advice welcome. Please contact Susan Cody for contact infor-mation. .

Minutes of the Ladies of Valhall Meeting Saturday, May 6, 2017

Denny’s Restaurant, Fletcher Hills Hostesses: Arlene LaBree and Anne Høidal 13 people attended. The meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m. by President Myla Cole-man. Secretary Sandra Yeaman confirmed that those in attendance had already read the minutes of the April meeting as printed in the May edition of Val-hall Viking. Three corrections were made: the name of the Music Schol-arship Council, the dates of Susan Cody’s planned trip to Norway, and Helga Moore’s having held the presi-dency of the House of Norway, not LOV. Dale Roybal moved and Anne Høidal seconded that we approve the minutes as corrected. The motion carried. Several members expressed apprecia-tion for the minutes of our meetings being included in Valhall Viking. Treasurer Amelia Seeto-Murguia was unable to attend but reported through Myla that there were no major depos-its or withdrawals from the accounts in April. Old Business Myla reported that her daughter tried on the adult bunad and loves it. Myla will buy the bunad for her daughter. She included ads for the child’s bunad and vest in Valhall Viking. Helen Johnson circulated samples of rosemaled ornaments her cousin is willing to make for us at a cost of $8.00 each. We could then sell them at Lille Butikken for $10.00 or more. Tam recommended and volunteered to contact the Sons of Norway mem-bers who do rosemaling to let them know we have received this offer and ask if they wish to match the offer before we act on ordering items from others outside our Lodge. Myla reported that Arlene LaBree

had suggested we put together a cookbook for possible sale at Lille Butikken. Dale mentioned the idea had come up before, and she has an outline of the proposal from that timeframe that we include just holi-day baking recipes. Dale volunteered to chair a committee to investigate options for a cookbook, possibly combined with the LOV stories and cultural notes from Anne for some time in the future. New Business Sunshine Committee: Barbara Evje is convalescing at home. Millie will send another card to her. Susan announced she will be part of the cast of the 10th Anniversary Cel-ebration of San Diego Follies which will run from June 22 through June 25 at Lincoln High School. She cir-culated postcards with information. Tam announced she will have pieces included in the 31st Annual Open Juried Show of the Pastel Society running May 3 to 15 at Spanish Vil-lage Gallery 21. A reception will be held Sunday, May 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. Thelma Johannesen announces she and members of her church choir will be performing at Carnegie Hall as part of a larger choral performance on November 27. A number of cultural celebrations will occur in May. The House of Norway Lawn Pro-

gram will be on Sunday, May 14. The House of Norway flag rais-

ing ceremony with brunch fol-lowing will be on Wednesday, May 17. It is important for those planning to attend the brunch to RSVP.

The Sons of Norway celebration of Syttende Mai will be dinner on Saturday, May 20.

Sewing Klubb will meet the last Wednesday of the month at the

House of Norway at 6:15 p.m. Cultural Committee: Tam Stautland and Anne Høidal read two more poems from Rolf Jacobson. Tam read the two poems, “May Moon” (Mai mane) and “May at the Windows” (Mai på ruten), in English, followed by Anne reading the poems in Norwegian. Anne pointed out that the latter poem’s rather dark themes result from the fact that in years past it was common for ill or ailing people to struggle to get through the winter and into spring and then die during the spring months. Another fact im-portant to understand the poet’s mood is that he was imprisoned for treason for four to five years after World War II because of his political alliance with Germany during the war. Tam reminded us that the next LOV to Read book selection is Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology. The LOV to Read club will meet at the HON every other month at 9:00 a.m. on the last Saturday of the month starting on June 24th. The following meetings will be in August 26th, Oc-tober 28th, December 30th, 2017, February 24th and April 28th, 2018. Continuing with the “Telling Our Stories” project, Sandra read respons-es from the four members who at-tended the March meeting for us to guess who wrote them: Jean Shogren went to a one-room

school house for grades 1 to 6. Ragnhild Amble grew up on a

farm with two large houses so that her grandmother, two aunts, and an uncle lived nearby.

Else Ottesen remembers watching her grandmother knitting socks and mittens for her grandfather and recalls the smell of the hot wool when her grandmother washed and felted them to make them water

proof.

Valhall Viking 11 June/July 2017

Anne was almost killed by a cow when she was 5 years old.

Since Myla admitted last month that she sewed her own wedding gown, she brought a picture of it for us to see. Sandra collected submissions for the Telling Our Stories project from members who had completed them and an-swered questions about the project for the rest of the members to work on submitting something next month. Sandra described her own piece about the branching points in her life, both those from childhood that resulted from events that happened outside of her control and those later resulting from choices she made. For the Good of the Order We sang Happy Birthday to Arlene and Dale, the only members present with birthdays in May . Winners of the drawing for the centerpieces were Helen Johnson, Peggy Gere, Arlene LaBree, Sandra Yeaman, Myla Coleman, Thelma Johannesen, and Millie Wright. Myla thanked our hostesses, Arlene LaBree and Anna Høidal, and adjourned the meeting at 11:10 a.m. Next Meeting at Denny’s: June 3, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Hostesses will be Tam Stautland and Thelma Johan-nesen. Respectfully submitted, Sandra Yeaman Secretary

Midsummer—Sankthansaften

Midsummer, also known as St John's Day, is the period of time centered upon the summer solstice. Northern Eu-ropean celebrations that accompany the actual solstice take place on a day between June 19 and June 25 and the preceding evening. Midsummer tradition in Norway, Sankthansaften, is celebrated on June 23. The day is also called Jonsok, which means "John's wake", important in Roman Catholic times with pilgrimages to churches and holy springs. For instance, up until 1840, there was a pilgrimage to the Røldal Stave Church in Røldal (southwest Norway) whose crucifix was said to have healing powers.

Today, however, Sankthansaften is largely regarded as a secular or even pre-Christian event. In most places, the main event is the burning of a large bonfire. In Western Norway, a custom of arranging mock weddings, both between adults and between children, is still kept alive. The wedding was meant to symbolize the blossoming of new life. Such weddings are known to have taken place in the 1800s, but the custom is believed to be older. It is also said that, if a girl puts flowers under her pillow that night, she will dream of her future husband. (Adapted from Wikipedia: Midsummer)

Adults Get Help with Reading and Math

Volunteer organizations are receiving money to help adults with reading, writing and math.

Altogether 79 nonprofits will be helping adults. The or-ganizations will hold courses in reading, writing, math and computer skills.

The organizations have received 25 million kroner from the Ministry of Education. The money will give people the knowledge they need to get a job and for life in gen-eral.

“It is positive that several volunteer organizations are helping adults. [They are] making voluntary contributions in an important way so that adults acquire new knowledge,” says Minister Torbjørn Røe Isaksen.

Many different nonprofits will organize courses. Money will go toward training that will take place among other places in shelters, volunteer centers, prisons and libraries. Organizations such as the Red Cross, Mental Helse (a mental health-focused organization), Caritas Norway (a Catholic development and relief organization) and Folke-universitetet (adult continuing education) are some of those who will receive money.

They will first and foremost help adults with little educa-tion. People should be helped where they live. You can look up where the nearest courses are arranged.

“The nonprofits meet adults in many different places. Adults who are not working also need new skills. Often, new knowledge allows them to participate in public life. This can result in their getting a job,” says Gina Lund. She is director of Kompetanse Norge (the Norwegian Institute for Adult Learning), which has the responsibility of distributing the funding

TUBFRIM—Stamps for a Good Cause For the past 30 years, members have been clipping can-celed postage stamps and sending them to Tubfrim, who then sells them to dealers and collectors.

Originally the money raised went to help children afflicted by tuberculosis. Since tuberculosis is no longer the threat to health that it once was, today the proceeds from the re-sale of stamps helps improve the quality of life for children and youth with disabilities and special needs. Sons of Nor-way members are the largest contributor outside of Norway to Tubfrim’s efforts, sending nearly 30% of all stamps col-lected.

While helping children is a great motivation for our mem-bers to participate, there is a special incentive to say “thank you”. For every pound of stamps collected, the member or lodge can enter a drawing, held in mid-January every year, to win a round trip ticket to Norway, worth up to $1,000. Bring stamps to Susan Cody, Tubfrim Chairperson, to any Vahall meeting.
