The building was created as part of the Urban Rehabilitation Program for Rome, in particu-lar what concerns the redevelopment of the Corviale area. It is a residential building in the mixed type: in-line on the lower floors, duplex in the last two levels. The project involved the construction of 35 apartments of various sizes, served by two staircases. The basic idea of the residential building is to communicate in differ-ent ways with different areas of the city from which the lot is surrounded. The front side fac-ing towards downtown reproduces a reassur-ing and familiar modern residential building typical of Rome with large balconies project-ing; the rear side facing toward the periphery, interacts with the Corviale-building nearby (1 km long housing building, covered by grey-ce-ment prefabricated panels ), it is characterized by a more compact facade, that represent the limit of the intervention. Both, the material-color coating of the west front and the invoice of the balustrades along the east front of the building, help to underline the duality of the building. It is more evanescent towards the city thanks to the railings recurring lacquered perforated sheet, more solid towards the Corviale, where the coating intense yellow in porcelain tiles is op-posed to the dark gray of the existing Corviale-building. The yellow surface of the west front enhances the compositional complexity of the facade and at the same time highlights the cut between the second and third level. This deep cleavage underlines the change in the type in-side the building ( in-line in the lower floors, duplex in the upper floors).

Gallipoli Old MarketAssignments: Design manager-Building site supervisorPhase: Completed

Gallipoli old Market has been built at the end of XIX century, at the entrance of the old city, a high and rocky island linked to the continent only by a narrow bridge (XVII century). The Mar-ket has been built where the Castle moat was, just linked to the west wall of the fortress, so it completely hid the main façade of the Castle and its masonry access bridge. The project also solved the relationship be-tween Market and Castle . A delicate balance between writing of the additions and reading of history led to the creation of a dynamic and multi-level path of wooden stairs introducing a new and different perception of both build-ings.

The first phase of the intervention relates to the demolition of all existing walls (nternal and ex-ternal). After the process of lightening, the new outer limits become multi layered walls that permit to walls having exceptional performance both in energy saving that in noise reduction.Technology used will be carried out in “not wet” tecnique, instead of traditional way of doing. The building is involved in structural changes to expand the plan and superelevation. It allows to have 9 apartments, with large bal-conies.

The project extension is about 900 square me-ters, It occupies the first floor of a prefab indus-trial building. The client is a software-develop-ing firm, the working spaces are supported by some facilities: the information desk, a waiting space, a meeting room, the testing room, a rec-reation space. The core of the project is a solid stretched box, made of opaque walls, colored according the firm brand. The folded walls un-derline different spaces: the reception desk, the testing room and a little meeting room. The firm advertising at the end of the long ur-ban corridor is like an extrusion of the exterior billboard toward the interior. The choice is to transfer the public space inside the building producing a private space that had the char-acteristic of aggregations and the quality of a public plaza.During this game between inside and outside, public and private, the language of public space communication (advertising, super-graphics) floods in the interior space. The whole of the working spaces floats around the solid core, blurring in polycarbonate walls of different opalescence, these frames permit the sun-light to enter inside the squared build-ing and hint at the invisible electronic net-works. The sophisticated translucency of the skin remembers the theme of multimedia com-munication, mathematics of software and nu-meric matrixes of computers. At the same time the interior maintains the rough industrial char-acteristic thanks to the existing concrete pillars and floor and the use of specific building ma-terials: stretched or zinc sheets, plaster-board structures re-invented according to a new po-etic based not so much on the aesthetic of the detail, but on the poetry of assemblage.

The flat occupies 120 sqm at the fourth floor of a residential building. All the existent partitions have been demolished, obtaining a wide open space. A complex system of new furniture re-configures completely the flat. Before the inter-vention there was a strict separation between day and night areas; The project intend to cre-ate a fluid space where all the functional areas are connected each other, and people pass freely by each of themso to reach the panoram-ic window of the house, located on the rear. The flat changes itself in a small city where pri-vate and public space meet each other: The Street is a public façade along the corridor, with a “urban” cladding of grey fiber cement, leading to the “belvedere”; The House is the private core of the flat. Here the furniture looses the hard cover of cement and shows smooth surfaces of wood and Corian. The long snake of furniture hides secret rooms: a small wc, a laundry, a storage. It sometimes shows private rooms like the Japanese well-ness box (furou), where all the family members can meet for a hot common bath.

In this small flat, glazed flooring on the first and mezzanine levels abolished the traditional perception and hierarchy of space, confusing the orientation and specific weights of the in-terior design. The space requiring furnishing, a void with a base of 13mq and a eight of 5 metres, was always interpreted in its entirety thanks to the flat’s vertical transparency, in the resultant fluid space, three sets of minimal furnishingwere introduced. Although differ-ent in form, they share materials. These three hubs with complex volumes accommodate the sphere of domestic life: sleeping, washing and cooking. The three furnishing-objects are per-ceived through the transparency and reflection of the glass floor, wich dematerialize them and change their clean-cut geometries in to pure atmosphere. The combination of a single mate-rial and complex forms is possible thanks to the flexible, resistant property of Corian. An historic container thus becomes a “time box” in which to place the modes of contemporary life and informal comunicating spaces, whose narrative is completed by its inhabitants movements and habits.

The project is located at the ground floor (600sqm) of an old industrial building, a former ice cream factory. The client is a fashion designer. The Showroom is located in the middle of the area surrounded by other functions all around it: the reception, offices, cutting and sewing area, a storage for dresses. The theme chosen for this project are the fab-ric textures. The showroom wall is similar to a white translucent canvas made by polycarbon-ate slats with insertion of thin strips of meth-acrylate in them, so to obtain the effect of a im-palpable organza. This three-dimentional fabric effect is combined with the two-dimentional super-graphic and ad-vertisement communication. Inside the show-room, fashion photos of the last collection, im-pressed on curtains, hide the dress hangers. At the entrance a wide photo applied on the glass door welcomes people in a charming way. All this graphic elements give to the space the op-portunity to change according to the season and to the fashion trend.A complex lighting system gives to the space the opportunity to change depending on the event going on and according to the different uses of the space.

The project is the rehabilitation of a country building used in the past as a storage. The in-tervention transforms the former construction in a eco-single family house according to the Pas-sive House Standard. Saving energy is the main task of the building and the theme of the design process. The save-energy task leads to a hard transformation of the building: where the opened façade was once, there is now the closed front of the building because this side faces the north. According with the old building, the single family house maintains the three structural spans, the pitched roof, the use of wood for some structural parts, the pillar system as structural frame. The formal aspect of the renewed building is similar to a folded shell because of the super-insulated casing enveloping the north front and the roof. Its aspect is highlighted by its deep thickness and by its significant protrusions over the pe-rimeter walls. The image of the folded shell is clarified by the continuity between north wall and the pitched roof, it is simplest then usual because all the roof devices (tiles, drainpipes) are hidden inside the shell.

The project is the renewal of a small portion of the street that turns around Gallipoli castle and old market. Actually it is occupied by vehicle circulation. The main tasks are three: have a place useful to observe the interesting ancient wall of the mon-ument, create an open air plaza where people can meet, give people the possibility to access to the old-market via a pedestrian pathway. The area is split in two different ground levels, the one at the lower level is horizontal, the oth-er has a smooth inclination leading to the old market, the first has the function of plaza, the second has the function of pathway. The main materials chosen for this project are stones for the horizontal surfaces and cor-ten for the vertical surfaces, for the pavement of the lower plaza will be reused ancient stones removed during the construction site.

The project is located in the west side of Rome along the Tiber River. The building, of large dimensions, is character-ized by a basement floor occupied by a parking plan. It will not be possible to dig because of the proximity of the river. The car parking will be equipped with large openings on the roof so as to allow ample sun-light and ventilation. It will allow the distinction between the drive-ways and those related to leisure so to guaran-tee a better place apart from the car level. The parking rooftop plan will become the base, the landscape where the buildings are. The horizontal building is occupied by a large luxury hotel, which have roofgarden with restau-rants and pool, guaranting a wide view on the city. The other building, taller, hosts luxury apart-ments overlooking the nature along the river. Both buildings will be wrapped by a skin of glass printed. It will favor the winter sun exposure and become the support of photovoltaic panels integrated in the glass. The surface of the intervention will be 25,000 square meters.

The intervention is located in a former convent in Altamura, an ancient village in the north part of Apulia. Our work consists of multylayered approach. The main focus is mainly located in the hidden garden outside ( The courtyard). A series of small pavilions in corten steel define a pathway with culinary vocation. Their design in section wants to remember the gentle slopes of the hills in the nearby country-side. Anyway the former garden is maintained in ac-cordance with its axial perspective typical of the “italian garden” as well as all paths sided by greenery. The layers are represented by the typical plants of the North Apulia, by the borders of the flow-er beds in corten steel, the existing chestnut trees, linear chairs, lights and vertical green louvre. Inside the historic building has been organized a conference hall for 300 guests, a room for cooking lectures with kitchens and a small library. All interventions have been designed to iden-tify themselves different, with his contemporary aspect and tecnology, in comparison to the historical monument, avoiding as much as pos-sible mimetic aspects.

Corviale is an urban area built during the sev-enties. The main building is a concrete volume 1km long. It was design as a residential building integrated with commercial activities along the third floor, under the influence of Le Corbusier ‘s idea of the building as a small city. Since its construction all the third floor has been occu-pied illegally. Step by step all the commercial gallery has been transformed into small flats. The design task is to renew the entire third floor, creating apartments with the right layout and under the respect of the laws. The project is even the occasion for the redevelopment of some common spaces inside the building.

New Accessibility to Purità Beach - GallipoliAssignments: Design managerAwards

Purità Beach is the only beach located in down-town Gallipoli (a high and rocky island connect-ed to the land only by a thin bridge). This is the only beach of the island, so it is very important to improve its use by the residents and tourist hosted in the historical core of Gallipoli. The re-newal of the ramp intends to offer a more com-fortable use of the beach, wants to create exhi-bition spaces in use all year long, try to have an attractive open air public space. A part of the existing stone ramp has to be demolished and replaced by a wooden slope, right for disabled. Under the ramp, some showers, three w.c. and a small storage are located. The materials cho-sen for this project (wood and cor ten steel) can be easily distinguished by the ancient con-struction, but the project cannot be easily dis-tinguished by the sea, in fact the façade of the ramp system facing the beach seems to be the one before the renewal and all the new devices are hidden and not clear visible. This is a spe-cific task of the project that wants to maintain the same aspect of the beach viewed by the sea so familiar to citizens and tourist.

The competition area is located at the border line of the District of the Thirty-six Trade, fac-ing the Hoan Kiem Lake, at the intersection of important routes. It is a place where history, lei-sure and traffic mix together. Moreover is a very changeable area depending on the day and on the time. The main idea is having a project made by two kind of urban elements: an hardware and a software. The hardware is made by architec-tural elements that change the use and the per-ception of the area, but do not change them-selves during day and time. Hardware elements are: Water Park, Sky Park, Historical Plaza. The software is made by street furniture that can changing depending on day, time and uses. Software elements are: Flooding Square, Coloured Curtain Changeable System, Light Seating Furniture. The main task is the urban rehabilitation of the area without losing the changeable aspect of the site. Highlighting the differences depending on different users and uses is considered very important, the proposal wants to enrich complexity not delete it, focus-ing the design process on some main powerful architectural elements. The urban texture of the competition area is made by long tube-houses, we decided to use this pattern as the generating system of every architectural element of the urban design.

The goal of the project is to identify in Chinese historical and urban archaeological landscape new relations of continuity among elements that, currently, seem confronted as separate. These should merge instead in the envisioning of a cul-tural landscape that has historical, physical and perceptual dimensions. In this vision, the con-tinuity of historic urban landscape and its nar-ration made of witnesses, documents, histories and artefacts, is the ideal place to create new relationships between study, conservation and education for cultural heritage, between urban development and historic heritage, between museums and site requalification. The goal is to investigate from a scientific theoretical point of view, and through design, in the context of a greater awareness of environmental sustain-ability, an idea of archaeological landscape in the strategy of transformation of urban centres affected by cultural and museum programs. The project aims at defining a new role of heritage in the development of the city and in promotion and enhancement of its urban identity, through the creation of museum complexes, cultural district and museum of the territory, including the dimension of cultural landscape and the valorization of archaeological areas and his-torical heritage. In this context, to complex sit-uation of E Pang Palace Archaeological Site Park provides an interesting chance to analyse the sequence: excavation-field research-study-conservation-museum-heritage Park and pre-sentation in its whole development. In addition, it would be possible to examine and evaluate the relations that heritage parks and museums establish with its context.

The project for Chongqing Industrial Museum and Creative Industry Park aims at developing clear intervention strategies inside a peculiar industrial-archaeological area and its upgrad-ing into a museum network system. The project will define the characters and the elements that converge to define a new concept of Indus-trial Landscape, which can become a source of identity of the current territory. The concept of cultural landscape, as defined by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, reflects a well-established interaction over time between the environment and the human capacity to drive the transformation of the territory, such as to define an identity to be preserved as a land-scape ‘value’ for the entire community. The goal of the project for Chongqing Indus-trial Museum and Creative Industry Park is to identify in Chinese historical and industrial landscape new relations of continuity among elements that, currently, seem confronted as separate. These elements should merge in-stead in the envisioning of a cultural landscape that has historical, physical and perceptual di-mensions. In this vision, the continuity of his-toric landscape is narrated through several witnesses, documents, histories and artifacts, transforming the former industrial buildings of structural steel factory into the ideal place to create new relationships between study, con-servation and education for cultural heritage, between museum and site, between urban de-velopment and historic identity.

City of Rome, Department for Urban Suburbs Rehabilitation. District Contract Corviale. First Prize

Corviale is a very special area, built during the 70th. The main building is a residential 1km long parallelepiped volume. All around it some urban facilities stand. One of this is an open air theatre built over a covered market place. Actually both of them are not in use. The City of Rome asked to renew the theatre in order to organize around it new functions and to adapt it to the new security laws. Some spaces of the market place are to be annex to the theatre in order to have dressing rooms for actors, a tick-et office, some storages. The project includes movable structures, made by prefab panels of fiber glass. Around the main auditorium other small platforms are planned, each of them have to be use for an open air activity like dancing, playing or watching movies. All these new el-ements can be easily distinguished from the existing buildings thanks to the unusual colors and completely different patterns.

The theme of the project is the cafeteria an-nex to Sant’Elmo Castle, located upon a high hill of Naples. The furniture inside the build-ing are made by fiber-glass. They made a sort of infrastructure that can vary depending on the geometry of the space, it is movable and changeable depending on the time and on the use. The main elements are fiber glass-panels, sometimes they have a flat surface, sometimes they are perforated. This translucent material is combined with steel plates. This different sur-faces are overlapped in different layers to give new lighting effects all along the space. It be-comes a continuous ambient where the differ-ent areas can be distinguished by the different surface effects. For the exterior the team designs an original kind of benches. They are boxes made by alu-minum. Each of them host in its box an inflatable system of clouds that can be used to shade the sun in summer. Both the interior and the exterior furniture give a sense of lightness in contrast with the massive wall of the castle. Both the system (the fiber-glass panels and the clouds) made the interior and the exterior space always changeable.

High Line Design CompetitionAssignments: Design manager

The design competition task is the rehabilitation of the abandoned metropolitan train line in New York. The line have a tortuous pathway, running in between the buildings at a higher level than the motorway. The main idea is to transform it in a long green park and to set some pavilions for events, exhibition, cafeterias, bookshops, in the main hubs, where the High Line crosses the driveway. The main construction element is a wood plank, that has always the same dimen-sions. It is used to create long footpaths, small pavilions, wide billboards. Where the high Line crosses the driveway the planks become the skin of some stairs or elevators. The pattern of the new elements is always the strip type, but the perception of it is always different due to the different urban landscape where they are inserted in.
