    ARE YOU A CHOCOHOLIC?Sure, you love chocolate and you occasionally crave it. But chocoholics

    in the true senseare a rare and proud breed. They eat, sleep, and

    breathe this delectable confection. They would rather give up alcohol, sex,

    reading tabloids, going on Facebook, even shopping, than surrender their

    daily fix. Not sure if youre ready to join the ranks? If you answer yesto

    more than five of the following, youre well on your way.

    Every night, visions of sugar plums dipped in fudge dance in my

    head.

    I am a member of The World Chocolate Society: in October, I fly to

    Paris for the Chocolate Salon; in November, I taste everything at theNew York Chocolate Show; and every February, I road-trip to the

    Annual Chocolate Lovers Festival in Fairfax, Virginia.

    I have sampled all of the following: truffles with real gold shavings;

    bacon-flavored chocolate bars; even chocolate-covered ants!

    My favorite color is chocolate brown; close second is mocha.

    Ive consumed the entire 2-pound milk chocolate Dylans Candy Bar in

    one sitting.

    I subscribe to the twelve-step chocoholic program: Never be morethan 12 steps away from a piece!

    I ABIDE BY ALL OF THESE SWEET SAYINGS:

    Theres nothing better than a good friendexcept a good friend with

    Americans spend more than $7 billion on chocolate and

    consume about 2.8 billion pounds of it yearly!

    The average American eats 10 to 12 pounds (about

    27,000 calories worth!) of chocolate a year. The average

    Swiss eats 27 pounds a year (okay, they win!).

    According to Pat Kendall, Ph.D., a Food Science and

    Nutrition Specialist at Colorado State University,

    chocolate is the most commonly craved food in North

    America; 40 percent of American women and 15 percent

    of American men are chocoholics.

    According to The Guinness Book of World Records, the

    largest chocolate bar weighed 7,892 pounds, 8 ounces,

    and was made by Elah Dufour-Novi in Alessandria,

    Piemonte, Italy, on October 11, 2007.

    In 2008, to celebrate the launch of Thorntons Moments

    chocolates, the UK company created the worlds largest

    box of chocolates. It was 16.5 feet tall, 11.5 feet wide,

    and contained 220,000 individually wrapped pieces of

    chocolate!

    MarieBelle in New York City sold (and may still take

    special custom orders for) the worlds most expensive

    box of chocolates. For $15,000 you can purchase the

    Chocolate Picnic Steamer Trunk containing 500 pieces of

    chocolate ganache, 5 pounds of chocolate bark and

    croquettes, 80 ounces of Aztec hot chocolate, 8 ounces

    of Aztec Hot Chocolate Bars, and Aztec Iced Chocolate.

    It also comes with a leather journal, a teapot, an infuser,

    and a small library filled with books about chocolate!

    Lovers express their lust by giving green M&Ms (they are

    rumored to be an aphrodisiac). On Valentines Day,

    M&Ms/Mars even sells them solo as the color of love.

    The green M&M is the only female, and the seductress of

    the M&Ms characters.

    Artist Luis Morera and Chocovic, the largest chocolate

    producer in Spain, created a 7-metric-ton chocolate

    heart for Valentines Day 2002. The grand confection

    was commissioned by online dating service Match.com

    and made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.

    A CHOCOLATE ADAY CAN KEEP THE

    DOCTOR AWAY!

    Studies have shown that consuming a

    small bar of dark chocolate every day

    can reduce blood pressure in indi-

    viduals with high blood pressure.

    Dark chocolate has been shown to

    reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad

    cholesterol) by up to 10 percent.

    Dark chocolate is a potent antioxi-

    dant. Antioxidants gobble up freeradicals, destructive molecules that

    are implicated in heart disease and

    other ailments.

    Chocolate contains the neurotrans-

    mitter serotonin, which acts as an

    antidepressant.

    Chocolate is a great energy source!

    A single chocolate chip can provide

    enough energy for an adult to walk

    150 feet.

    BRAIN CANDYFONDUE

    Fondue stems from the French word fondre, which

    means to melt. Originally, people in Switzerland

    made cheese fondue in a large communal pot as a

    way of using up dry, hardened cheese. In the

    1950s, cheese and chocolate fondue made theirway to the United States and became an elegant

    dessert option and a fad for parties. Chocolate fondue is

    a warm, sweet chocolate sauce that you dip treats

    intoeverything from fruit and cake to nuts, marsh-

    mallows, bread, even whole chiles. Be creative: anything

    tastes better dipped in chocolate! Break out the double

    boiler or a pretty fondue pot and start melting. Note:

    Look, chocoholics, even the bottle is really foiled

    chocolate.

    COOKINGWITH CANDY

    DYLANS CANDY BARDELECTABLE FONDUEServes 4 or more

    1 cups heavy cream

    1 pound good-quality bittersweet chocolate,

    finely chopped

    1 tablespoon vanilla extract

    Heat the cream in a small, heavy saucepan over

    moderate heat just until it comes to a bare

    simmer. Add the chocolate and let stand for

    2 minutes. Add the vanilla and whisk until

    smooth. Serve immediately. Note: Use a skewer

    or fondue fork so you dont burn your fingers.

    Skinny fondue: Use cup unsweetened

    cocoa powder, cup granulated sugar,

    2 tablespoons Splenda, cup skim evaporated

    milk, and 1 teaspoons vanilla extract.

    Caramel fondue:Instead of chocolate, melt

    2 bags of mini caramels.

    Red Hot fondue: Add 1 tablespoon cinnamon

    and teaspoon chili powder.

    Nutty fondue:Add some chopped pecans,

    almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts. Or, stir in

    cup creamy peanut butter.

    Charged-up fondue: Sprinkle in 1 tablespoo

    instant coffee granules. Or pour in cup hot

    brewed coffee or espresso.

    Naughty fondue: Pour in 1 to 2 tablespoons

    of your favorite liqueur or brandy to up the ante
