Valencia Honors Program Annual Report

2015-16

Seneff Honors College Vision Statement: The vision of the Seneff Honors College is to discover potential in students and inspire excellence.

Valencia Honors Mission: The Honors Program at Valencia College is committed to providing students with opportunities for academic and personal growth in a unique environment where intellectual exploration and quality teaching are our primary goals with an emphasis placed on individuality and participatory learning. The program will continue to prepare students through classroom instruction and a variety of extracurricular goals in preparation for their role as leaders in the 21st century (adopted November 1988).

Major Accomplishments:

Ø Student scholarships increased from $340,000 to $500,000. Ø Redesigned the Interdisciplinary Track curriculum to align with the new General

Education requirements. Ø Updated the Leadership Track curriculum to align with the new General Education

requirements and add an additional communications option. Ø The academic discipline deans, track coordinators, and Honors advisors collaborated to

create a college-wide Honors schedule that reduced class cancellations from over 30% to less than 15%.

Ø Hired a dedicated Program Advisor July 5, 2016 to provide service to all Honors students college-wide.

Ø Increased students taking the Honors Project (IDH 2912) course from 5 in 2014-15 to 14 in 2015-16.

Ø Transitioned track coordination in 3 out of 4 tracks to new coordinators and transitioned advising in 2 out of 4 tracks to new advisors

Ø Hosted our first combined track trip in which 30 students from both the Interdisciplinary Studies and Leadership track visited Washington, D.C. for 5 days to participate in leadership, historical and cultural activities.

Ø Instituted the New Student Experience Honors course that incorporates Service Learning into all sections offered.

Ø The Honors Student Advisory Committee approved a revision of the honor code. The purpose of the revision is that the Code will guide student behavior and establish integrity in the program while allowing for creative and varied sanctions that focus on learning and restorative justice. (see Appendix A)

Ø The Honors Resource Center on East Campus was moved to a more visible location and added an additional computer for student use.

PURPOSE/PHILOPOPHY:

Students of the Seneff Honors College are members of a community that embraces diversity and individuality while sharing a common commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility. It is expected that students of the Seneff Honors College will uphold standards of integrity, honesty, and scrupulous behavior by adhering to the following code of honor.

RATIFICATION:

Ratified by the Honors Student Advisory Committee on the 9th day of April, 2014, this Honor Code to the Seneff Honors College is binding all Seneff Honors College students (including honors class takers). A copy of this Honor Code shall be available at all times in the Honors Office, alongside Honors Student Advisory Committee Constitution wherever it may be found, and in the Honors Student Handbook. Beginning in the spring of 2015, every incoming honors student shall agree to be bound by this Honor Code.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Students of the Seneff Honors College are members of a community that embraces diversity and individuality while sharing a common commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility. In this spirit, these expectations have been set forth:

• Students are expected to exemplify academic and personal integrity by being familiar with and conscientiously adhering to all aspects of the Valencia Student Code of Conduct (see valenciacollege.edu/pdf/studenthandbook.pdf).

• Students are expected to abide by accepted standards of academic originality and creativity, to conduct themselves honorably in collaborative and group work, and to refrain from resubmitting work prepared for one course in another without permission of both professors.

• Students are expected to demonstrate respect for fellow students and for faculty at all times and to contribute meaningfully to a productive classroom environment.

• Students are expected to be ambitious learners, exhibiting academic enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity.

• Students are expected to participate in the well-being of the honors community by regularly attending meetings and events, by taking part in service activities, by keeping informed of program happenings, by behaving appropriately in the Honors Resource Centers, and by contributing to the development of the program.

Page 12: Valencia College Seneff Honors College Annual Report 2015-16 · 2015-16 Seneff Honors College Annual Report pg. 6 § Class Enrollments: Courses Offered Courses Made Total Enrollment

2015-16 Seneff Honors College Annual Report pg. 12

• Students are expected to understand their role as exemplars, to act accordingly both on and off campus, and to refrain from activity that may be detrimental to the reputation of the Seneff Honors College, to Valencia College, or to other honors students.

• Students are expected to hold fellow honors students accountable when these expectations are not met.

HONORS CODE VIOLATIONS:

1. Violations found through Valencia College's Student Code of Conduct, Policy 8-03. In addition to any sanctions levied by Valencia College through the Code of Conduct procedure, any Seneff Honors College student (including honors class takers) may be subject to censure or dismissal from the Seneff Honors College based on the violation.

2. Academic Dishonesty as Defined in Valencia College Policy 8-11 (College Policy 6HX28:08-11):

All forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited at Valencia College. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, acts or attempted acts of plagiarism, cheating, furnishing false information, forgery, alteration or misuse of documents, misconduct during a testing situation, facilitating academic dishonesty, and misuse of identification with intent to defraud or deceive. All work submitted by students is expected to be the result of the student's individual thoughts, research, and self-expression. Whenever a student uses ideas, wording, or organization from another source, the source shall be appropriately acknowledged.

3. Violation of Student Expectations: As a member of the Seneff Honors College, the student agrees to uphold the student expectations (see section above).

4. Filing False Complaint of Honor Code Violation with Malicious Intent or Blatant Disregard: It is understood that not all complaints may be accurate, and such inaccuracies should not be the basis for a violation on the side of the reporting person. However, if the circumstances surrounding a false complaint indicate that it was done with malicious intent or with blatant disregard for the facts, such may be the basis for a violation of the Honor Code.

HONOR CODE PANEL and HONOR CODE CHAIRPERSON:

The Honor Code shall be reviewed and enforced by a student panel structured in the following manner:

1. Honor Code Panel: The Honor Code Panel will consist of the Honors Student Advisory Committee Executive Board and one of the following: a Dean of Academic Affairs, an Honors Track Coordinator or an Honors Faculty Member.

2. Honor Code Chairperson: The Honor Code Chairperson will be the Honors Student Advisory Committee President. In the case that the Honors Student Advisory Committee President is the accused, the Honors Director will appoint another member of the Honors Student Advisory

Page 13: Valencia College Seneff Honors College Annual Report 2015-16 · 2015-16 Seneff Honors College Annual Report pg. 6 § Class Enrollments: Courses Offered Courses Made Total Enrollment

Committee Executive Board to serve in this capacity. The Honor Code Chairperson shall be a non-voting member in the Honor Code Panel. The Honor Code Chairperson will be responsible (with the assistance of the Honors Office) for receiving formal complaints of Honor Code Violations, assembling the Honor Code Panel, scheduling meetings of the panel, and communicating with all parties involved including the accused.

REPORTING PROCEDURE:

1. If a faculty member has reason to believe that a violation of the Seneff Honors College Honor Code has occurred, he/she may have an initial meeting with the student to determine if a violation has occurred. If the faculty member believes that a violation has occurred he/she is required to report it. This initial meeting is to clarify if a violation has occurred and not to determine if a known violation is to be reported. 2. If a student has reason to believe that a violation of academic integrity has occurred, he/she is required to report it to the Honor Code Chairperson coordinated through the Honors Office. The student that has witnessed a violation can, but is not required to, encourage the student suspected of the violation to self-report. If the student refuses to self-report, then the student that witnessed the violation must report it to the Honor Code Chairperson. 3. Staff members that believe they have witnessed a violation must refer the case to the Honor Council for disposition.

PROCEDURES:

1. To initiate an Honor Code proceeding, a formal written or oral complaint of an Honor Code Violation shall be filed with the Honor Code Chairperson through the Honors Office.

2. The Honor Code Chairperson will coordinate the assembling and meeting of the Honor Code Panel and notify the accused of the charges.

3. The Honor Code Panel will investigate the evidence available, will allow the accused to offer a rebuttal to the charges in writing or in person, and may interview the witnesses. The Honor Code Panel may request the assistance of a college faculty or staff to serve as an advisor and assist in the investigation's logistics.

4. After the investigation, the Honor Code Panel will vote on whether there was enough evidence to prove a violation.

5. If a majority vote of the Honor Code Panel finds that there was a violation, it shall record the evidence relied on to support such finding and make a sanctioning recommendation. If there is not a majority vote finding of violation, the charge is dismissed, and no further proceedings can be taken against the accused for that act.

2015-16 Seneff Honors College Annual Report pg. 14

6. The Honor Code Panel shall judge the proper sanctions based on the evidence and testimony considered during the proceeding. The Honor Code Panel may consider previous sanctions, including sanctions under Valencia College Policy 8-03 (Student Code of Conduct).

7. The Honor Code Panel will make a sanctioning recommendation to the Honors Director who will make a final decision regarding sanctions. Should the Honors Director modify the sanction recommended by the Honor Code Panel the Honors Director will meet with the Honor Code Panel to explain the rationale for the decision.

HONOR CODE PANEL SANCTION RECOMMENDATIONS:

Upon a finding of an honor code violation, Honor Code Panel recommended sanctions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Censure of the violation as defined in Valencia College Policy 8-11 (Academic Dishonesty);

2. Loss of elected position (if applicable)

3. Loss of Honors Scholarship for one or more terms

4. Suspension of all Honors privileges for one term (Fall or Spring)

5. Dismissal from the Seneff Honors College
