Vale Sport Vision & Aims

Key Achievements • 186 clubs & organisations and 18 National Governing Bodies of Sport

linked to the Vale Sports Development Team.

• 43 clubs offering inclusive or disability specific opportunities

• 11,686 registrations in Dragon Sport for 7-11 year olds

• 3557 young people aged 12 – 16 accrued 44,546 participations in 5x60 scheme

• 459 course attendees from 75 different organisations through the Creating Confident Coaches and Doorstep Sports projects.

Fundamental Skills for a Life in Sport

DRAGON SPORT • 246 Dragon Sport clubs - ↑ 24% on previous year • 363 volunteers involved in delivery • Introduction of Multiskills – developing fundamental movement skills

5x60 • 48% of the Vale’s 12 -16 year olds participated in 45 different sports within the 5x60

scheme • Focus on increasing female participation – 45% (1627) of girls engaged • Introduction of Activity Co-ordinators has enabled the AYP Officers to increase their

capacity to link to 42 new clubs and establish 27 school-club links. AQUATICS • Focus on improving the School & Community Learn to Swim programmes. • 1144 year 3-6 children accessed School Swimming programme – ↑ 22.5% • 89,403 swims at Vale Leisure Centres

Vibrant Community Sport THRIVING COMMUNITY SPORTS CLUBS

• 74 projects, covering 30 different sports were awarded Community Chest funding totalling £82,855.

LEISURE CENTRES

• 751,281 attendances at Vale Leisure Centres.

DOORSTEP SPORTS

• Targeting 9-16 year olds in Communities First areas, partners included Communities First, VVB, PCSO’s, Elim Elevate, World at Play & Newydd Housing.

• 218 young people accrued 1059 participations across 5 new sessions.

• 23 individuals accessed 50 training opportunities.

• 12 regular volunteers, 50% of whom were classified as NEET or at risk of becoming NEET.

• Project shortlisted for New Project of Year award at StreetGames National Awards event and was awarded Streetmark accreditation.

Inclusion DISABILITY SPORT • 20,634 participatory opportunities by disabled people - ↑12% • Vale Council has achieved bronze Insport accreditation – national accreditation • 11 clubs awarded Insport accreditation

FEMALE PARTICIPATION • 43% of 7-11 year olds participating in Dragon Sport programme • Pupil Voice project in Bryn Hafren – new activities, new PE kit, improved changing

facilities • Additional female focussed projects included netball, football, dance, cheerleading

and atomic touch rugby.

WELSH LANGUAGE • 57% (381) of Bro Morgannwg pupils participated in 5x60 activity. • 537 extra-curricular sessions delivered at Welsh primary schools as part of Dragon

Sport programme, accruing 1527 participations. • 455 YGBM pupils completed School Sports Survey.

Knowledgeable & Motivated Workforce

• Workforce includes paid staff and volunteers in clubs, schools and other organisations undertaking roles such coaching, umpiring & administration roles.

• 459 participations on courses such as First Aid, Safeguarding Children, Disability Inclusion, ‘How to Coach’ workshops, Multiskills training and Active Young People Leadership training.

Coaches of the Future

• Project focussed on offering mentoring, training & practical coaching experience to 20 selected young people.

• Accrued 645 voluntary hours impacting upon 1763 participants & 7704 participations.

Leadership Pathway

Young volunteers: • contributed to 1109 sessions • impacted upon 4043 participants • Impacted upon 16,789 participations • attended 211 training opportunities • Equivalent saving of £9988 to local authority based on casual coach rate

3rd in Wales in Hooked on Sport measure

• 52% of children participate at least 3 times a week (Welsh average 48%)

• 62% are members of a sports club

• 81% of pupils are confident trying new activities

• 73% of pupils enjoy sport outside of school ‘a lot’

Community Sport Restructure Current Structure

• Local Authority receive funding from Sport Wales to deliver the Vale Sport plan - funding for staffing costs, and programme costs for projects including the 5x60 scheme, Dragon Sport and the aquatics plan.

Proposed Restructure

• Revised model of delivery - creation of Regional Sports Agencies responsible for developing a vision and the strategic planning of community sports development in their geographical catchment.

• It is proposed Regional Sports Agencies will be the vehicle through which Sport Wales funding is coordinated and commissioned within that geographical area.

• We need more detail from Sport Wales to better understand how the new delivery model will work in practice.
