Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture for Higher Education

E-learning services have evolved since computers were first used in education.

When instructors say they are using e-learning, this most often refers to the use of technology as classroom aids.

Two popular tools for E-learning are Blackboard Inc. and Moodle:

Blackboard Inc. has over 20 million users daily. Offering six different platforms: Blackboard Learn, Blackboard Collaborate, Blackboard Mobile, Blackboard Connect, Blackboard Transact, and Blackboard Analytics; Blackboard's tools allow educators to decide whether their program will be blended or fully online, asynchronous or synchronous. Blackboard can be used for K-12 education, Higher Education, Business, and Government collaboration

Moodle is an Open Source Course Management System. It is free to download and provides blended learning opportunities as well as platforms for distance learning courses. The Moodle website has many tutorials for creating a program or becoming a Moodle student.

The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists.

It's also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity.

As such it applies both to the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course.

Overview of Google Earth

Google Earth allows you to travel the world through a virtual globe and view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, and much more.

With Google Earth's rich, geographical content, you are able to experience a more realistic view of the world. You can fly to your favorite place, search for businesses and even navigate through directions.

Although the options within Google Earth are endless, here are a few things you can do:

Screencasts can help demonstrate and teach the use of software features.

Creating a screencast helps software developers show off their work.

Educators may also use screencasts as another means of integrating technology into the curriculum.

A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration.

The recent trend in the E-Learning sector is screencasting. There are many screencasting tools available but the latest buzz is all

about the web based screencasting tools which allow the users to create screencasts directly from their browser and make the video available online so that the viewers can stream the video directly.

The advantage of such tools is that it gives the presenter the ability to show his ideas and flow of thoughts rather than simply explain them, which may be more confusing when delivered via simple text instructions.

With the combination of video and audio, the expert can mimic the one on one experience of the classroom and deliver clear, complete instructions.

From the learner's point of view this provides the ability to pause and rewind and gives the learner the advantage of moving at their own pace, something a classroom cannot always offer.
