Know your diabetes

I am having mild diabetes only. Should I take medicines for diabetes?

Thanks for accepting that you are having diabetes. There are nothing called as mild diabetes or severe diabetes. All these terminology of mild diabetes and severe diabetes will mislead you and even misguide your treatment plans. There is nothing called as uncontrollable sugar. All range of diabetes blood sugar is controllable, provided you take appropriate medications. Since there is no uncontrollable diabetes, there is nothing called as severe diabetes. Risk of heart disease with pre-diabetes is three folds, when compared to normal persons. So terminology of mild diabetes is a misnomer. Diabetes needs control and prevention of complications as well. So do not misguide yourself by saying mild diabetes or severe diabetes.

What is HbA1c ? What is the use of that ?

HbA1c is a test useful to calculate the average blood sugar of a patient for the past three months. Here we are measuring the saturation of sugar in blood red blood cells - haemoglobin. This test is done in blood sample only; we can do the test anytime, irrespective of food intake. Normal non-diabetic persons will have HbA1c of less than 6% only. American Diabetes Association recommends maintaining HbA1c less than 7% to prevent diabetes complications. HbA1c in between 7 to 8 % indicates fair control. HbA1c more than 8% indicates poor control and HbA1c more than 10% warrants urgent need for diabetes management and control.
