Hop the ferry to Beaver Island, watch boats chug under the drawbridge in Charlevoix, check out the yachts in the Elk Rapids Marina, rock hunt on a quiet Lake Michigan beach, grab a beer at Short’s Brewery in Bellaire, spend a summer day fl oating Torch Lake on a pontoon—and so much more. ELK RAPIDSThis little harbor town set on a thin strip of land between Elk Lake and Lake Michigan rolls out sweet as a storybook. Stroll a footbridge over the Elk River to the town library, don your swimsuit and water shoes to shoot the old sluice that stretches across where the river runs downtown, find your place in the sand on the Lake Michigan shore, stroll the 270-slip marina and browse the shopping district with its boutiques, galleries, restaurants and well-stocked wine shop. elkrapidschamber.org.
DON’T MISSOn summer Wednesdays, the downtown hosts music, kids games and more during Evenings on River Street. elkrapidschamber.org.
Harbor Days, August 3-6: Elk Rapids’ big summer shindig, featuring live music, parades, a carnival, sandcastle building, fireworks and other fun. elkrapidsharbordays.org.
GO TO THE BEACHVeterans Memorial Park is Elk Rapids’ in-town oasis on Lake Michigan’s East Grand Traverse Bay. Kids love playing where Elk River empties into the bay. Basketball courts, tennis courts, picnic tables, grills and a playground round out a perfect beach day. On River Street in downtown Elk Rapids.
The Elk Rapids Dam Beach is a sweet little in-town spit of sand (perfect for soaking your feet after shopping!) on East Grand Traverse Bay and next to the Elk Rapids Dam. Find it off Dexter St.
A lovely quarter-mile-long beach on Lake Michigan’s East Grand Traverse Bay, bathhouse, pavilion, grills and picnic tables as well as wooded hiking trails make Elk Rapids Day Park a special place. The park is also the site of Walk of Art, an outdoor sculpture park with some 30 sculptures. S. Bayshore Rd., on the south side of town. artrapids.org.
The gorgeous Wilcox-Palmer-Shah Nature Preserve on Lake Michigan beach is protected by the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy and open to the public. Find it three miles north of town on North Bayshore Rd. gtrlc.org.
KIDSLittle anglers will love tossing a line into Elk Rapids’ family friendly Kids Pond for panfish and bass. Off Dexter Street just below the spillway. 231.264.8202, elkrapidschamber.org.
Kids and their parents love shooting the sluice on the Elk River in downtown Elk Rapids. This is free, old-fashioned fun that you don’t find much anymore. Wear your bathing suit and water- shoes. 231.264.8202, elkrapidschamber.org.
GOLF Elk Rapids Golf Course is a great choice for beginners and high-handicappers, this nine-hole course—designed by the legendary golf architect Donald Ross—offers spectacular views of scenic Elk Lake. 724 Ames, Elk Rapids, 231.264.8891, golfelkrapids.com.
The lovely A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort & Antrim Dells is situated on a strip of land between East Grand Traverse Bay and Torch Lake. The links-style Sundance course is loved for its spectacular vistas; the Jerry Matthews–designed Antrim Dells has been an area favorite for more than 30 years. 627 Agaming Dr., Kewadin, 231.264.5081, a-ga-ming.com.
GET ON THE WATERAt the beautiful Elk Rapids Harbor in downtown Elk Rapids (and on Lake Michigan’s East Grand Traverse Bay), you’ll find a full-service marina outfitted with a slew of amenities, including shuttle service to restaurants and shopping. Seasonal, transient and short-term docking. Boat ramps on to East Grand Traverse Bay and into Elk River and the Chain of Lakes.
A day (or days) boating beautiful Elk Lake is unforgettable. Rent everything you need from the boat (pontoons, ski boats, fishing boats) to skis and tubes at Elk River Marina. 231.264.9500, elkrivermarina.com.M

CHARLEVOIXCharlevoix the Beautiful, as this charming town bills itself, sits between Lake Michigan and Round Lake—which is connected to big, beautiful Lake Charlevoix and to Lake Michigan. With three lakes, fi ve stunning beaches, the downtown waterfront East Park and fi rst-class marina, this city is for water lovers. But that isn’t the end to the fun here. Historic storefronts fi lled with eclectic boutiques and galleries add to the city’s character, as do annual plantings of petunias that line Bridge Street (the city’s main thoroughfare). There’s enough community spirit to welcome visitors with open arms—to outdoor concerts at East Park’s band shell, to festivals, craft fairs and farmers markets. Read on to fi nd more about what makes this city a prime Mid-west vacation destination. visitcharlevoix.com.
DON’T MISSVenetian Festival, July 16–23: The 86th annual Venetian Fest will have it all, including live music, kids games, a boat parade on Round Lake, a local battle of the bands, a midway, two nights of fi reworks, the AquaPalooza boating party and much more. venetianfestival.com.

Depot Beach: On Lake Charlevoix, located next to the town’s renovated old train depot (now a historical museum) has lifeguards on duty during the summer, restrooms and a playground. 231.547.2101, charlevoix.org.

BEAVER ISLANDThe 32-mile trip by small plane or ferry from the mainland to this, the largest island in Lake Michigan, is just the begin-ning of the adventure. The rest is in the expansive beaches, forests, two lighthous-es, quirky history and great restaurants, bars and shops. beaverisland.org.
DON’T MISSBeaver Island Music Festival is a three-day outdoor event that features music of all tradi-tions and art. Camping is available. July 14–16. beaverislandmusicfestival.com.
Professional and student musicians from all over the country gather to perform classical music during Baroque on Beaver. July 29–August 7, baroqueonbeaver.org.
HISTORYIn the mid-1800s, a renegade Mormon leader and self-anointed prophet named James Strang led 300 devotees to the island, where he ruled over his inde-pendent Mormon “kingdom” until his assassination by followers in 1856. Following Strang’s death, Irish immigrants established a new enclave on the island. By the late 1800s, 95 percent of the islanders were Irish, and Gaelic was the common language. (Of the 881 residents in 1880, there were 141 Gallaghers, 123 Boyles, and 90 O’Donnells.) Relics of both the Mormon and Irish communities still survive today: the Mormon colony’s former print shop is now a museum, and the island’s two Irish pubs are the only establishments open year round.
GETTING TO THE ISLANDRound-trip fares to Beaver Island run approximately $60 on the ferry and $100 by plane. For details, check out the transportation companies.
