Hands-on exhibits explore cities, space, music, energy, the

human body & more…PORTSMOUTH

— The Children’s Museum of Virginia is a place where chil-dren are encouraged to imagine, explore, and discover together through play. Children step inside a world where bubbles grow bigger than they are, where the forces of energy electrify and spark their imagina-tion, where they can be a farmer, a banker, a scientist, a star gazer and more. Groups can explore the exhibits at their own pace or schedule a Focused Group Pro-gram. Focused Group Programs are led by Museum Educators and are aligned with the Virginia State Standards of Learning (SOLs). Pre- and post-visit packets are provided to teachers participating in these focused programs. Children take an active role in these fun, energetic, educational programs. Focused Group Programs can be adapted to meet your group’s needs. Call (757) 393-5258 to talk to a Museum Educator or visit www.childrensmuseumvirginia.com.FieldtripFieldtrip

The NRA National Firearms Museum

FAIRFAX - The NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Vir-ginia, consists of

15 galleries comprised of 85 exhibit cases housing 3,000 firearms in a 15,000 square foot facility. The Museum details and examines the nearly 700-year history of firearms with a special emphasis on firearms, freedom, and the American experience. Each gallery is evocative of a period of time in American history, from the stockade fort at Jamestown to the gun factories of New England. Life-sized dioramas include a nineteenth-century riflemaker’s shop, a trench on the Western Front in WWI, and a shelled-out town square in Normandy in WWII. The firearms tell the stories of how they were used to pro-vide security and sustenance to the early colonists, how they were used to secure our freedom and independence, and have been used ever since to maintain and preserve those liberties. Within the galleries are also tales of exploration, manufacturing, competition, hunting, and recre-ational shooting sports. For information visit www.nramuseum.com.

Thermometers help us know what the weather will be like. If it will be 90°F outside, we’re not going to put on a winter

coat. Or if it’s below zero, we won’t be wearing shorts. Here’s a way to show how a simple thermometer works. A downloadable pdf file with complete instructions and an explanation of how thermometers work can be found on our website’s Resources section. Go to www.virginiafieldtrips.com and click on “Resources” in the menu bar.

Make a Thermometer to Measure the Temperature

Eastern Screech-OwlIf a mysterious trill catches your attention in the night, bear in

mind the spooky sound may come from an owl no big-ger than a pint of milk. Common east of the Rockies in woods, suburbs, and parks, the Eastern Screech-Owl is found wherever trees are, and they’re even willing to nest in backyard nest boxes. These supremely camouflaged birds hide out in nooks and tree crannies through the day, so train your ears and listen for them at night. Size & Shape: The Eastern Screech-Owl is a short, stocky bird, with a large head and almost no neck. Its wings are round-ed; its tail is short and square. Pointed ear tufts are often raised, lending its head a distinctive silhouette. Color Pattern: Eastern Screech-Owls can be either mostly gray or mostly reddish-brown (rufous). Whatever the overall color, they are patterned with complex bands and spots that give the bird excellent camouflage against tree bark. Eyes are yellow. Behavior: Eastern Screech-Owls are active at night and are far more often heard than seen—most bird watchers know this species only from its trilling or whinnying song. However, this cavity-roosting owl can be attracted to nest boxes or, if you’re sharp-eyed, spotted in daylight at the entrance to its home in a tree cavity. Habitat: Trees define the Eastern Screech-Owl’s habitat. This owl is fairly common in most types of woods (evergreen or deciduous; urban or rural), particularly near water. It shuns tree-less expanses of mountains or plains.Excerpted from The Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s website “All About Birds,” which can be found at: www.allaboutbirds.org.

TRIVIA ANSWERS1: The Flowering Dogwood is the state flower and the state tree, making Virginia the only state to have the same plant for both.

2: Up to 70% of global Internet traffic goes through data centers in Northern Virginia.3: All of the above are illegal somewhere in Virginia. In Culpeper it is illegal to wash a mule on the sidewalk. In Prince William County it is illegal to keep a skunk as a pet. And in Norfolk spitting on a sea gull is not tolerated.

RICHMOND — Throughout the year, St. John’s Church Foundation conducts educational programming in support

of the Virginia Standards of Learning for Virginia Studies. The historic St. John’s Church building powerfully engages students and adults by placing them in the very place where our forebears—including Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and George Wash-ington—discussed the issues and enacted the deeds that led to the founding of America. School Tours - Costumed interpreters

lead a discus-sion of the events in Virginia that led to the American Revolu-tion and the vigorous debates of the Second Virginia Convention, during which Patrick Henry delivered his famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech.Historical Reenactments - Professional actors in 1770s attire por-tray ten delegates, including such prominent Virginians as Rich-ard Henry Lee, Benjamin Harrison, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Your students will witness the democratic process at work through the animated convention debates that culminated in Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech.Contact the Visitor Center at (804) 648-5015 to book your tour or visit www.historicstjohnschurch.org.

Virginia Field Trips – Spring & Summer14

Welcome to geology’shall of fame.

Baseball has one. Rock and roll has one. And although it took millions of years, the earth has one, too. And with well-lit, well-paved walkways stretching throughout, you can easily stroll through rooms 10 stories high, marvel at the enormous columns and crystal-clear pools, and of course, hear the world’s largest musical instrument, the Great Stalacpipe Organ. It’s time to discover the most cav-ernous caverns on the East Coast. It’s time to discover Luray. For a free brochure, call (888) 443-6551 or visit us online at LurayCaverns.com.

WILLIAMSBURG — Whether tying sailors’ knots at the ships’ pier or exploring a Continental Army tent, students are learning the essentials

of early American history through hands-on learning experiences at Jamestown Settlement and the York-town Victory Center. The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, a state agency that administers the two living-history muse-ums, offers educational programs that make learning about the beginnings of the United States fun and exciting for students through demonstrations and hands-on participation. Students are able to witness history come alive as they encounter costumed in-terpreters demonstrating everyday life in re-created settings. Hands-on activities coupled with a struc-tured educational tour allow students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of life in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Foundation’s education programs, taught by trained museum educators, address United States history curriculum objectives and can be adapted to a variety of grade levels. For information about the Foundation’s education programs or to schedule a class visit, call (888) 868-7593 or visit www.historyisfun.org.

At Jamestown Settlement & Yorktown Victory Center, History is Fun!

To touch is to explore, to explore is to discover, to

discover is to learn.

WINCHESTER — The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Mu-seum’s mission is to ignite creativity, spark curiosity and

inspire learning in patrons of all ages by providing a rich variety of interactive, hands-on exhibits and programs which focus on the sci-ences and mathematics, the humanities and the arts. Experience the laws of physics while racing balls over ramps and through loops or test your agility while scaling a climbing wall. Get attracted to magnets, dive into atoms, wrap yourself up in the weather or gaze at the stars. The Discovery Museum experience will make learning fun and all programs correspond with the Virginia SOL’s. To touch is to explore, to explore is to discover, to discover is to learn.
