Good afternoon, and welcome to WaltonLane for this afternoon’s SouthernCombination League Division 2 fixtureagainst Rustington. We extend a warm welcome to our visitorsplayers, officials and supporters who havemade the relatively short journey along thecoast, in addition to today’s match referee,Wayne Webb from Worthing - and hopethey all enjoy their short stay here atWalton Lane.Roll the clock back seven days, saw us comeaway from a bouyant Upper Beeding with a1-1 draw.Having gone a goal down early on through afreak goal – a cleared back pass smashing offBeeding striker, Ben Whales and looping intothe net – we levelled things up early in thesecond through Nick Edgington. There were chances at either end as bothteams went for the winner, but in the end apoint was probably a fair result, althoughwas a score neither really wanted! We were impressed by improvements UpperBeeding appear to have made since makingthe jump back into Step 7, with a greatplaying surface, supporters who seemedappreciative of a good game, and top marksfor the hospitality and hot food at the RisingSun pub afterwards!Unfortunately the reserves were unable tofield a side for their Cup fixture at LangneyWanderers, due to a combination of awedding, work commitments and injurieswhich decimated Danny Mullen’s squad. We made every effort throughout the weekpreceding to avoid conceding the fixturewhich nobody wanted to see happen, notleast from the financial implication that willnow result.
Despite this set-back, Danny has got his newsquad working hard on the training pitch, and set-up a midweek friendly against aNavy side at HMS Collingwood, to combathaving gone straight into a competitive WestDivision with minimal pre-season. Theytravel to Roffey this afternoon. After their impressive start to the campaignwith back-to-back 6-3 victories, RickKennett’s newly-formed under 15’s weredefeated 7-0 at Worthing Town Red lastweekend – a well established team who areone of the fancied sides in their Division.Off the pitch (but sort of on it, too!), wewere thrilled to learn that Andy Probee hadwon the Sussex County FA Groundsman ofthe Year award - no mean feat in beatingcompetition from more senior clubs in theCounty, with better facilities, equipment andbudget.Andy and Rhys Hughes from MulberryContractors have worked wonders to make avillage green into a County standard footballpitch for all four of our teams to benefit fromthis season – and of course, the wider localcommunity on a non match-day.You can read more about the award furtherinto the programme.Rustington come into today’s fixture withone victory from their opening six leaguegames – a 3-1 win at Ferring two weeks ago– however they are unbeaten in their lastthree having also won in the IntermediateCup at Westfield and drew 1-1 last time outat home to AFC Varndeanians, so like lastweekend at Beeding, would perhaps showform that belie their current league position.Rustington were one of the demoted sidesfrom the ‘old’ Division 2 last season owing toground grading – something we can verymuch empathise with, having also suffered asimilar fate in 2011/12.They most notably denied Bosham in theIntermediate Cup final back in 2005 – acompetition we continue to pursue successin!Remember the clubhouse and bar is openserving hot and cold food/ drink and scoreson the TV at half and full-time.
Enjoy the game,
Southern Combination – Division 2

A second half strike fromNick Edgington salvaged a point on afrustrating afternoon for Bosham - asthe Robins were held on the road by abuoyant Beeding side whoseperformance belied their position inthe table. The game kicked off at a break neckpace with the yellows surging forward, trying to catch Bosham cold andcertainly the momentum was with thehosts.Despite Marco Giambelardini goingover the bar, with keeper Ben Long, well beaten, the home side still lookeddangerous with their youthful teamshowing good pace and intention -and they did take a deserved leadalthough the scorer didn’t know muchabout it.The Robins defence was underpressure resulting in a back pass tokeeper, Kieran Magee, who attemptedto clear the lines but only proceededto smash the ball against the onrushing Ben Whales and the reboundsailed into the back of the net with theBeeding striker certainly left feelingthe effects.Management on the Bosham benchlooked frustrated and the redscontinued to find going tough as thehalf wore on, with chances fleeting.
The defensive line for the hosts waslead strongly by Jim Bacon and theRobins found life difficult to breakdown the well organised Beeding sidebut, approaching the interval, finallydid manage to work some goodchances to get back on terms.First, Edgington expertly got throughon goal but his effort smacked backoff the post and the hosts were ableto clear the danger.Bosham hit straight back with AlexBarnes stormed into the area to latchonto a sublime through ball fromJames Wilson, but Long saved reallywell to keep the hosts narrowly aheadat the break.Shortly after the interval Boshamfinally got their just rewards and it waslittle surprise that Edgington would bethe one to strike to bring the game toparity. The tall striker cut in from theright and then ended up wrongfooting keeper, Ben Long, with apartially scuffed shot from just insidethe area to the bottom corner to bringthe Robins level. The game moved on with both sidesthrusting onward in search of whatwould probably be a winning goal but, alas, neither could find that cuttingedge.Louis Bell brought the best out of Longwith a stinging shot, Alex Townley andWhales both went close for the hostsbut in the end, a stalemate wasprobably a fair result with both sidesjust as frustrated as each other.Bosham: Magee, Docherty, Mullen,Blanshard, Bryant, Bell, Edgington,Wilson, Giambelardini, Redman,Barnes.
