Our family is neither large nor small. I have a mother, a father and a sister. We all live together in a three-room
flat in one of the industrial districts of Kharkiv. We are an average family.
My father Ihor Ivanovych is 45 years old. He is a tall and well-built man with short black hair and grey eyes.
He works as a manager at a big plant. He likes his work and spends most of his time there. By character my
father is a quiet man, while my mother is energetic and talkative.
My mother’s name is Olha Petrivna. She is a teacher of music and plays the piano well. My mother always has
a lot of work to do about the house and at school. She is a busy woman and we all help her.
My sister’s name is Alla. Like our mother Alla has blue eyes and fair hair. She is a very good-looking girl. Alla
is three years younger than me. She is a pupil of the 8th form. She does well at school and gets only good and
excellent marks. Literature is her favourite subject and she wants to become a teacher, as well as I do.
Our family is very united. We like to spend time together. In the evenings we watch TV, read books and
newspapers, listen to music or just talk about the events of the day. Our parents don’t always agree with what
we say, but they listen to our opinion.
All of us like to spend our weekends in the country. We often go to the village where our grandparents live.
They are aged pensioners now, but prefer to live in the country. My grand-grandmother is still alive. She lives
in my grandmother’s family and is always glad to see us. Her health is poor and she asks us to come and see her
more often. I also have many other relatives: uncles, aunts, cousins. We are happy when we are together.

most difficult. You will need to prepare questions of different levels of difficulty for each category. Begin by
asking a team which category they have chosen. Then ask a level of difficulty. Ask a question corresponding to
that ievel of difficulty, (e.g. How do you spell robot?) If they give the correct answer they ‘earn’ the appropriate
number of points. If they give the wrong answer the team loses those points.

III. Procedure of a new lesson
Activity 1a Look and say.
Objective: to present new vocabulary
Teach your PP what a.m. and p.m. stand for. Play the cassette. PP repeat. Let them guess the meaning of the
words.
Language notes
In English speaking countries the 24 hour clock is only used for travel. So they say ‘Five twenty in the
morning’ and write 5.20 a.m. For the afternoon they write 5.20 p.m. A.M is Latin for ante meridiem and p.m.
for post meridiem (before midday, after midday). Both ways are possible a.m. or am. You can say six o’clock
or six am and six pm.
Activity 1b Copy and write in the correct place.
Objective: to practise writing the new vocabulary PP should write the different times of the day in the correct
‘cloud’. There are eight including the times shown in the pictures.
Activity 2a Draw and complete the clocks.
Objective: prepare for the next activity PP complete the blank clocks with different times.
Activity 2b Work in pairs. Draw, ask and complete.
Objective: to practise the new vocabulary PP work in pairs as in Lesson 2 Activity 5.
Activity 3a Look and answer.
Objective: to give further practice in talking about time. First ask your PP to look carefully at the Remember
box. Teach them to use the prepositions at and in. PP look at the picture, ask and answer.
Culture Notes
Explain that it is an English timetable and that children in English schools do not have breaks between the
lessons, but there is a coffee break (usually at about 11 o’clock) and a long break for lunch (school lasts all
day). In British schools the teachers moye around from class to class, not the PP. This means the process of
ending one lesson and starting another is very quick that’s why there are no breaks between lessons.
Activity 3b Work in pairs. Ask and answer.
Objective: to give less controlled practice in talking about timetables This is an ‘information gap’ activity. PP
work in pairs. Pupil A looks at the timetable on page 53 and Pupil В looks at the timetable on page 47. They
ask each other questions to find out the missing information. Tell them not to look at their partner’s timetable.
IV. Consolidation of a new lesson
Activity 4a Write today’s timetable.
Objective: to practise writing timetables
First PP complete the day of the week, then write Time on the first line in the left-hand coiumn and Lesson in
the right-hand one. Then they write the timetable for that day. Help them if they do not know the right time for
each lesson.
Activity 4b Play My Favourite School Time.
Objective: to give freer practice in talking about school time Point to a spot in the classroom and say that it is
the time when the school day begins, e.g. 8.30. The place opposite it is the end of the school day, e.g. 13.30.
Ask your PP to stand up and go to their favourite time. You may choose a place for yourself. Ask one of the PP
What’s your favourite school time? S/he should give an answer as in the example.

III. Procedure of a new lesson
Activity 1 Work in pairs. Check your partner’s homework. Objectives: to check homework; to practice
peer evaluation skills PP can exchange their exercise books and check each other’s homework. If the
atmosphere in your class is friendly you can encourage them to give each other a mark for their work.
Activity 2a, 2b, 2c
Objective: to present the structure Inductively
PP look at the sentences in 2a and match them with possession or regular activity in 2b. The activity helps to
develop PP’ cognitive skills. Instead of you telling them the grammar rules you make them work these rules
out. PP answer the questions in 2c in their mother tongue.
Activity 3 Complete. Use ‘have got’ or ‘have’ (‘Do you have ...?’) Objective: to reinforce have and have got
First draw your PP’ attention to the Remember box. Make them understand that the questions with have in the
meaning of regular activity are formed with do. While they are writing in their exercise books give as much
help as they need.
Activity 4a Say True or False.
Objective: to prepare for reading
This activity helps to develop PP’ prediction skills.
Activity 4b Read and check your answers.
Objective: to practise reading for specific information PP read the text and find out whether they were right or
not.
IV. Consolidation of a new lesson
Activity 5 Listen and complete.
Objective: to practise listening for specific information You may play the cassette twice if you think your PP
have difficulty in understanding the text. Before you play the cassette tell your PP that they should try to
understand what subject the girl doesn’t like. Tell them not to worry if they don’t understand every word.
Fred has got a sister Betsy. She is a pupil in the fifth class. Betsy likes literature and history. She likes maths,
too. She says PI is boring. Fred likes football. Fred likes PI. But he isn’t a schoolboy, he’s only four.
If your PP do the activity quickly and there is time you may ask them questions on the text. e.g. Who likes PI?
How old is Fred? Ask your PP to look at Activity 3 (Dice Game) in Lesson 6. They should make the counters
and bring them to class next time. They can use the paper patterns shown in the book or they can bring buttons.

III. Procedure of a new lesson
Activity 2 Work in groups. Write a timetable
Objective: to reinforce the new vocabulary
Divide your class into 3-4 groups. PP sit facing each other. Tell them that they will make a timetable. On the
blackboard write down the subjects and the number of lessons per week. e.g. English - 3 Maths - 4 History - 2
etc. Give your PP plenty of time (but not more than half of the lesson!) to make a timetable. Never mind if they
use too much of their mother tongue as long as they say the names of the subjects and days of the week in
English. Give help when necessary.
Activity 3 Change the groups. Make a new timetable.
Objective: to reinforce the new vocabulary
When they are ready mix the groups. In the new groups each person is to tell the rest the timetable for one day
of the week from the timetable s/he has made. S/he will say, On Monday the first lesson is the second lesson is
the third is etc. The rest have to fill in the new timetable. When the work is done you may ask the groups to
count the number of lessons in different subjects and see if it corresponds to the requirements on the
blackboard. It does not matter if it doesn’t, your purpose is to get your PP talking, not to create an ideal
timetable.
IV. Consolidation of a new lesson.
Activity 4 Play Dice Game.
Objectives: to revise numbers; to have fun; to practise the material learnt in the unit
To play Dice Game you need a dice for each group and your PP need the counters they have brought. You
should bring some extra buttons in case some PP forget.
a Divide PP into groups of three or four. In each group they should decide the order of throwing the dice.
b The first person throws the dice. The number on the upper side shows the number of steps this pupil should
take starting from number one. e.g. five. The pupil moves to Square 5 . с The second (third, fourth) pupil does
the same, d If the square has a picture on it with a number the pupil has to move forward (+) or back (-) the
number of steps shown e.g. Square 4 You don’t like maths.- 2. The pupil who is on this square must read the
sentence and move back to Square 2. The first pupil to reach the centre is the winner. If you do not have enough
time to finish the game, it could be done as part of your extra-curricular work.

My School
I had just left school and I would like to tell you a few words about it. I went to school in 1988. This school I
studied in is a three stored building. When you enter the school yard you can see poplar trees and beautiful
flowers. To the right of the school building there is a big playground. When the weather was fine we had our
classes in physical training there. When you enter the school you come in to a large hall and a cloak-room, there
we left our coats, rain-coats and jackets. On the ground floor where is also a school library and a gym.
