PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

On behalf of the Board of Directors, which includes President-Elect Jake Parkinson, Immediate Past President Joel Frost, Secretary Cory Larsen, Treasurer Terry Coon, and Board Members Kris Coleman, Matt Frentheway, Jeff Jorgensen, and Ric Olsen, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve the United Appraisers of Utah (UAU) as 2014 offi cers.

I am particularly proud to work with such a fi ne group of appraisers who voluntarily give of their time to improve the appraisal profession and thereby protect Utah property owners. Their tireless efforts have resulted in closer interaction with other professional real estate organizations, numerous

The UAU is dedicated to providing a voice for Utah’s residential appraisers. We worked to get passage of legislation requiring AMCs to provide a surety bond to ensure appraisers are paid for their work even when an AMC goes out of business.

This year we have provided low cost continuing education training as well as the required USPAP and appraisal supervisor/trainee courses. We worked with the Wasatch Front Regional MLS to address appraiser data needs. We helped coordinate and fund an academic Customary and Reasonable Fee survey as outlined in the Dodd-Frank Act. Utah was the third state to complete this action and the intention is for this to serve a reference for both appraisers and AMCs in ensuring appraisers are properly compensated for their work and expertise.

The Utah Valuation Expo (UVE) is the culmination of hundreds of hours of work by board members and former board member and former President, Mike Carter. The goal of the UVE is to provide relevant and timely training to Utah’s residential appraisers through continuing education. It also incorporates an appraiser-centric tradeshow in which vendors representing lenders, AMCs, appraisal software companies, E&O insurance providers, and national appraisal companies can meet Utah appraisers. Appraisers have the opportunity to network and build relationships with local and regional clients.

We will continue to strive to represent Utah appraisers. We will work independently and also in coordination with other groups with similar interests to streamline and clarify appraiser rules and regulations. As we proceed in this process, we will always remember that the overriding requirement and fi nal judgment of our efforts is the protection and service of the Utah property owner.
