7Uttaradit

Uttaradit has a long history, proven by discovery of artefacts, dating back to pre-historic times, down to the Ayutthaya and Thonburi periods. Mueang Phichai and Sawangkhaburi were Ayutthaya’s most strategic outposts. The site of the original town, then called Bang Pho Tha It, which was Mueang Phichai’s dependency, was located on the right bank of the Nan River. It flourished as a port for goods transportation. As a result, King Rama V elevated its status from Tambon or sub-district into Mueang or town but was still under Mueang Phichai. King Rama V re-named it Uttaradit, literally the Port of the North. Later Uttaradit became more prosperous, and its status was elevated once again into a province. The town of Phichai became just a district under Uttaradit.Uttaradit, cover an area of 7,838 square kilometres, is a province in the lower North of Thailand. Prominent landmarks include Sila Asna bedstead, the mystical legend of Mueang Laplae, sweet langsat, and birthplace of the valiant and patriotic hero Phraya Phichai Dap Hak, who fought alongside King Taksin the Great.

ADMINISTRATIONUttaradit is administratively divided into 9 districts; namely, Amphore Mueang Uttaradit, Amphoe Tron, Amphoe Tha Pla, Amphoe Nam Pat, Amphoe Fak Tha, Amphoe Ban Khok, Amphoe Phichai, Amphoe Laplae, and Amphoe Thong Saen Khan. ATTRACTIONSAmphoe Mueang UttaraditWat Tha Thanon (วัดท่าถนน) built on the bank of the Nan River and just opposite the Uttaradit Railway Station, Wat Tha Thanon or formerly called Wat Wang Tao Mor is

located on Kasem Rat Road, Tambon Tha It. Wat Tha Thanon today houses the provincial Buddha image of Luangpho Phet, a Chiang Saen-style Buddhist statue cast in bronze in the so-called diamond posture. According to records, in 1893, on his way back from performing a religious ritual in Wat Sawang Arom, Tambon Phai Lom, Amphoe Laplae, the abbot Luangpho Duang of Wat Mon Mai passed a deserted temple, Wat Sakae, and noticed a Buddha’s head finial emerged from an anthill. He unearthed a beautiful bronze Buddha image and enshrined it at Wat Tha Thanon. However, Luangpho Phet was later brought and enshrined at Wat Benchamabophit in Bangkok for 10 years at the request of King Rama V. Then, Luang Naruenatseni (Phan) took it back to Wat Tha Thanon under the king’s permission.

Wat Thammathipatai (วัดธรรมาธิปไตย) centrally located in the city, at the In Chai Mi-Samran Ruen Intersection, Wat Thammathipatai or formerly called Wat Ton Makham is where door panels of the large and ancient wihan (image hall) of Wat Phra Fang are kept-within the Dhammasapha building. The panels, made of Alangium wood, measure 1.1 metres width x 5.3 metres height x 0.16 metres depth. The carved traditional design is of the graceful style of the Ayutthaya period. The mazy Kanok Kan Khot design comprises the Phum Khao Bin and Kanok Bai Thet patterns. These intricately carved ancient door panels are rated second only to those of Wat Suthat in Bangkok.

Wat Yai Tha Sao (วัดใหญ่ท่าเสา) located on Samran Ruen Road and adjacent to Tha Sao Railway Station, Tambon Tha Sao,

Hence the sobriquet “Phraya Phichai Dap Hak” or “Phichai the Broken Sword”. This monument was built by the Fine Arts Department and inaugurated on 20 February, 1969. Within the
