How to applyReady to take the first step in your UTS journey? Here’s what you need to know.

Getting inWhen it comes to getting in to UTS, how we assess your application depends on the type of applicant you are:

– If you’re a recent school leaver, we’ll look at your selection rank (a combination of your ATAR/IB score plus any adjustment points you receive).

– If you’re a non-recent school leaver, we’ll look at your selection rank, which may come from your ATAR/IB score or post-secondary studies, plus any relevant work experience or additional selection criteria required for your course.

– If you’re an Indigenous student, you can apply to UTS via the standard UAC process or through the UTS Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Jumbunna team will assess your application and either offer you a place in your preferred degree or in a pathway program that will prepare you to get the most out of uni life.

Please note: This guide is not intended for international students. Please visit uts.edu.au/international for more information on how to apply.

NO PRE-REQUISITESThe good news? There are no pre-requisites for UTS courses, which means you can apply for any course that interests you. However, some courses have an assumed knowledge component, which means you’ll need to brush up on the expected skills and expertise if you want to do well in your studies.

Need a bit of help? UTS offers bridging courses in key areas to help you get the knowledge you need.

View the full list of our admission pathways on our website

uts.edu.au/admission-pathways

Admission pathwaysDidn’t get the selection rank you were hoping for? Admission pathways are another way to get into your preferred course. UTS pathways include TAFE courses, diplomas and other formal qualifications that can get you where you want to go.

UTS PATHWAYS

UTS undergraduate degrees

Enrolling in another UTS undergraduate degree can eventually lead you back to your first-choice course. Pick a similar course with a lower selection rank, study for a year full time*, and then re-apply via UAC for another shot at your dream degree. You’ll be assessed on your highest rank, which takes into consideration your ATAR as well as any other studies you may have completed. You could also be eligible for recognition of prior learning.

UTS College diplomas

Leap into the second year of your chosen UTS degree** when you complete a higher education diploma at UTS College. As the premium pathway provider to UTS, UTS College offers diplomas in business, communication, design and architecture, engineering, information technology and science. Diplomas are designed in collaboration with UTS, and you’ll attain the same educational outcomes as a first-year undergraduate student.

UTS Jumbunna Unistart

Jumbunna Unistart is a unique 12-month program for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. You’ll build confidence and basic academic skills in writing, mathematics and selected subjects from your chosen degree. Once you’ve completed the program, you’ll progress into undergraduate studies at UTS and get recognition of prior learning for the subjects you’ve already done.

U@Uni Academy

A two-year program for senior high school students of our U@Uni partner schools. Beginning at the end of Year 10, the Academy introduces you to the uni experience, with tutoring and additional support to develop skills to succeed at uni and beyond. Once you’ve successfully completed the program, you’ll be offered a place to study here at UTS.

EXTERNAL PATHWAYS

TAFE or private college diploma

Completing an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma at TAFE or a private college can prepare you to re-apply to your preferred UTS degree. In some cases, you may be able to choose a graded diploma (where you get grades for individual subjects) instead of a competency-based diploma (where you either pass or fail), making your application more competitive for UTS courses with high selection ranks.

Tertiary preparation and foundation studies

If you’ve completed a tertiary preparation certificate (TPC) or a foundation studies program, it can count towards your UAC application and will convert to a qualification rank. Almost all courses at UTS will consider a NSW TAFE TPC and other completed tertiary preparation courses from Australian institutions.

STAT testThe STAT test is a multiple-choice ATAR alternative that’s accepted for admission to many UTS courses. The requirements? You’ll need to have turned 20 by March 2022 and have obtained your STAT results within the three years prior to the year you’re planning to start your degree.

Limited ATAR

A Limited ATAR is calculated using the results from your best five HSC units, rather than the 10 required for a standard ATAR. UTS accepts Limited ATARs for all undergraduate courses except scholarship and accelerated nursing courses. But take note: to be eligible, you need to be at least 20 years of age in the year you completed your HSC and taking between 5–9 units of ATAR courses, including at least one unit of a Category A English course.

* Provided you meet matriculation, some specific courses allow less than a year of study - FASS, Business, Design, Health, Science** Based on successful completion of a diploma with the required grade point average (GPA) and depending on the course you choose.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIPSYou’ve given your life to your sport – now let your sport give something back to you. These sporting scholarships from ActivateUTS, via UTS Sport, will help you achieve on the field and in the classroom.

– Elite Athlete Program

– Emerging Athlete Program

– High Performance Program

– Nationals Scholarship Program

ScholarshipsScholarships are about more than helping you pay the bills. At UTS, they’re about celebrating achievement, supporting circumstance and making education more equitable and accessible than ever before. Some schemes open as early as April 2021, so make sure you don’t miss out!

Access scholarshipsAccess scholarships are all about recognising your potential and helping you take the leap towards success. Here’s what we offer:

FINANCIAL SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIPSOur equity scholarships aim to overcome financial disadvantage in whatever form it takes. Whether you have a disability or ongoing medical condition, a rural home address, a refugee background or carer’s responsibilities, these scholarships can help make university study possible.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WOMENAt UTS, we work hard to provide an inclusive work and study environment – in fact, we’ve been repeatedly recognised by the Gender Equality Agency for our efforts. Our scholarships for female students in Business, Engineering, IT and Construction are just one way we champion gender equity.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANSSupporting Indigenous student participation is part of the fabric of UTS. We’ve got a wealth of scholarships and prizes to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander UTS students – they’re all part of our commitment to closing the gap.

REFUGEE AND ASYLUM-SEEKER SCHOLARSHIPSAre you a commencing undergraduate student on an asylum seeker bridging visa or temporary protection visa? Are you unable to access a Commonwealth Supported Place or our student loan schemes? Our humanitarian scholarships can support you to succeed.

Getting in

25

Page 26: UTS Undergraduate Guide 2022

As a domestic student, you’ll study in a Commonwealth Supported Place. This means the Australian Government funds some of the cost of your study while you pay a student contribution. The cost of your student contribution is based on the subjects you enrol in each session.

HECS-HELP With the HECS-HELP loan scheme, you can choose to defer your student contributions instead of paying up front. Once your income reaches the repayment threshold, which usually (but not always!) happens after you finish uni, you’ll start to pay it back through the ATO.

HECS-HELP is available to Australian citizens, permanent humanitarian visa holders, and New Zealand citizens who hold a SCV and meet the long-term residency requirements (other New Zealand citizens may not be eligible).

Interested? You can apply for a HECS-HELP loan during the UTS enrolment process – just make sure you’ve got a tax file number from the Australian Taxation Office before it’s time to apply.

Don’t want to incur a HECS-HELP debt? You can pay your student contribution up front every session – just make sure you pay it by the due date.

studyassist.gov.au/help-loans/ hecs-help

Fees and financial assistanceUni fees can be confusing – how much you pay depends on the uni you choose, the course you study and the subjects you enrol in. Here’s a quick guide to student fees at UTS.

STUDENT SERVICES AND AMENITIES FEE All UTS students pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee. This fee funds a range of social opportunities and support services (including clubs and societies; subsidised food, beverage and retail options; study skills; and health, counselling and advocacy services) that are an important part of student life.

Business Become your best self at a uni that’s at the top of its global game. The UTS Business School is one of only a handful of institutions in Australia accredited by AACSB, an international network that’s working to create the next generation of great business leaders. When you study with us, you’ll find yourself in the heart of Sydney’s financial, creative, start-up and technology industries, gaining fundamental and specialist business expertise from the first year of your degree. Hit the books in Australia’s only Frank-Gehry-designed building, engage with a wealth of industry opportunities throughout your degree, and emerge ready to get down to business.

CommunicationNot all communication degrees are created equal. By choosing a UTS Communication degree, you will equip yourself with skills to master new technologies, disciplines and modes of professional practice. We offer specialisations in creative writing, digital and social media, journalism, media arts and production, public communication and social and political sciences. You can also take advantage of our unique course structure and complete a double major. Plus, as well as building contemporary expertise and developing a professional portfolio in your field/s of choice, you can gain 80+ hours of professional workplace experience as part of your degree.

Design, Architecture and BuildingReady to stand at the forefront of global change? With a degree from the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, you’ll design, build and create your way to a more innovative and sustainable future. Our industry-informed curriculum will bring you face to face with the leaders in your field – think internships, guest lectures, networking events and more. Unleash your creativity in our specialist maker spaces, fabrication labs, and studios and get familiar with the digital technologies that will define your future career.

EducationWhen it comes to choosing a secondary teaching qualification, pick one that lets you combine your passion and purpose. With our unique ‘vertical stack’ degrees, you can complete an undergrad degree in science, communication (creative writing) or engineering studies and a Master of Teaching in Secondary Education at the same time. By completing 80 days of practical teaching experience in a NSW high school and receiving mentorship from a tertiary education supervisor, you will be career ready with two degrees, in as little as four years.

LawThe legal landscape is changing – and we’re changing with it. When you study at UTS Law, you’ll be ready for the challenges of tomorrow. Explore the new technologies that are shaping the profession with our Legal Futures and Technology major, polish your legal arguments in our Moot Court, or wield the law as a tool for good with our social-justice-oriented extracurricular programs. What’s more, you can start building your professional networks early in your degree – think internships, clerkships and a range of industry events. Ready for life as a lawyer? Fast track your qualifications by completing your practical legal training (PLT) as part of your UTS degree – it’s the final step towards admission to practise the law in NSW.

Science and MathematicsOur difference? We’re young, bright and changing the world – and with a UTS Science qualification, you can too. From tackling climate change to developing new drugs, solving crime or using statistical models to solve problems, a science or mathematics degree can bring you face to face with the world’s most pressing challenges. Engage with world-class teaching from industry experts, hands-on learning, and purpose-built spaces that will bring your learning to life. Beyond the classroom, dive into field work and research projects in a range of idyllic locations and explore the industry opportunities that can kickstart your career.

Transdisciplinary InnovationLike you, a Transdisciplinary Innovation degree is one of a kind – and like you, we’re running full steam ahead towards a future that’s full of unknowns. Learn to think differently with a degree that’s about mastering invention and complexity. Our courses will connect you with industry experiences, real-world briefs and meaningful professional networks across a wide range of professional disciplines. You’ll become a master collaborator, conceptual thinker and innovator – essential qualities that are highly sought after by employers the world over.

Combined degreesWhy graduate with one degree when you can graduate with two? With a combined qualification, you’ll be ahead of the curve. Indulge your analytical and creative sides, take a deep dive into two likeminded disciplines, or mix and match to create something that’s uniquely you. The good news? A combined degree is quicker to do than completing two degrees one after the other – which means you’ll be done and dusted in as little as five years.

GlossaryStarting uni is confusing enough, but there’s a whole new language that comes along with it. Here’s a summary of some of our key terms to help you get your head in the game.

Higher School Certificate (HSC)

Adjustment points (previously bonus points)

Adjustment points are numerical adjustments to your ATAR that can increase your selection rank and your chance of receiving an offer to study at university. You may be eligible for these points through initiatives like the Year 12 Subject Scheme, or if you’re an elite athlete/performer, live in a regional or remote area, or have experienced socioeconomic disadvantage.

Admission pathway If you don’t meet the requirements for direct entry into UTS, an admission pathway can be an alternative route into your chosen course. For example, you could complete your first year of study in another UTS course; complete a diploma at a VET provider; pursue a pathways program with UTS College, Jumbunna or Unistart; or complete work experience that’s relevant to your preferred degree.

Admission scheme A process that can increase your chances of receiving an offer to UTS. Admission schemes consider a range of life circumstances that might shape your application, such as academic performance in specific HSC subjects, interest in certain study areas, identification as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or experiences of educational disadvantage.

Assumed knowledge In some degrees, you’ll be expected to have an understanding of certain topics, theories or concepts before you start your studies. Introductory units and bridging courses are available if you don’t have the assumed knowledge you need for your chosen course.

ATAR The Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates your rank compared to all the students in your age group across New South Wales. Your selection rank combines your ATAR with any other adjustment points to give you an overall university entrance score. UTS, along with most other universities, will consider your application based on your selection rank rather than on your ATAR alone. Your selection rank may differ from university to university depending on the adjustment points you receive at each institution.

Current school leaver Someone applying to university who completed Year 12 in the year prior to intake is considered a current school leaver. For the 2022 intake, this is someone who completed Year 12 in 2021.

Non-recent school leaver Someone applying to university who is not considered a recent school leaver. This is usually an applicant who has completed some study after finishing Year 12 or who completed Year 12 three or more years prior to starting university.

Recent school leaver Someone applying to university who completed Year 12 in the two years prior to starting UTS and who has done no other study since high school (this includes all students applying to UTS straight from Year 12, as well as students who take a gap year prior to applying for admission).

University Admissions Centre (UAC)

Receives and processes most university applications in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

University

UndergraduateIf you’re studying a bachelor’s degree, you’re an undergraduate student. Once you’ve been awarded your bachelor’s degree, you become a graduate.

QualificationA bachelor’s degree is an undergraduate qualification that’s at least three years long. It’s awarded (or ‘conferred’) once you complete your required course of study.

Combined degreeA course of study that combines two degrees into one. A combined degree is shorter than studying both degrees consecutively and it’ll also increase your career flexibility once you graduate.

DiplomaA formal qualification that’s generally 1–2 years long. At UTS, we offer the Diploma in Languages and Diploma in Innovation. Both diplomas can be studied as additional qualifications alongside your degree.

HonoursAn extra year of study that lets you build on your interests by completing a research project. At UTS, an honours year can be embedded in an undergraduate degree or can be an optional additional year of study at the end of your undergraduate studies.

Course A program of study with a set number of subjects.

SubjectAn individual unit of study on a set topic. Each subject has a credit point value; you’ll need to complete a pre-determined number of credit points in order to receive your degree.

ElectivesAll degrees have compulsory subjects but some also offer a range of elective subjects that you can choose according to your interests.

Credit pointThe value assigned to each subject in your course. Most subjects are offered in Autumn or Spring session, last for a single session, and have a value of 6 or 8 credit points.

MajorA group of subjects that help you build specialist expertise in a specific area of study. At UTS, a major consists of 48 credit points.

Sub-majorA small group of subjects that help you build concentrated knowledge in a specific area of study. At UTS, a sub-major consists of 24 credit points.

SessionThe UTS equivalent of a school term (other universities may have ‘semesters’ or ‘trimesters’). Our main teaching sessions are Autumn (March–June), Spring (July–November) and Summer (November–February).

Full-time or part-time studyFull-time study is the completion of all the subjects available that are applicable to your course in a given session. Part-time study lets you complete fewer subjects each session and extends the duration of your degree, but take note: not all degrees are available part-time.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Previously known as ‘credit recognition’. If you’ve completed education or employment that’s equivalent to a UTS subject, RPL means you may not need to repeat the subject/s in order to complete your degree.

Learning formats

Laboratory (lab) A hands-on class where you can apply your theoretical knowledge in a practical way.

LectureA formal class where you’ll study the theoretical components of your course. Once you’ve got the theory, you’ll learn to apply it in labs, workshops and other practical settings.

InternshipA professional placement where you can apply your university learning in a workplace setting. Internships give you valuable industry experience, connections with prospective employers, and the opportunity to ‘try before you buy’ with your chosen career.

TutorialA small group class where you can explore lecture and other course content in detail. You’ll be guided by a qualified tutor and work alongside other students in your degree.
