When in the 17th century the Huguenots fled en masse from France to England, they took their own culture with them. Before long they were playing an important role in artistic life. Architect and decorator Daniel Marot fled to The Netherlands, where Willem III employed him to work on Paleis Het Loo, and later, when Willem became king of England, Marot laid the foundation of the characteristic William and Mary style in England. Typically English? Things that are seen as such are often the product of import and cross-pollination.

Take Purcell, for instance, who was around at the same time. His music is English and French, old and new at the same time. The Elizabethan gamba consort clearly has its roots in Italy. And the hero of the London stage in the 18th century, Handel, originally from Saxony, wrote…Italian music.

In this festival we are inquisitively examining English music, which we so love. Tudor polyphony, virginalists, consorts in all shapes and sizes, religious and theatre music by Purcell, and music of lesser-known con-temporaries of Handel, under the heading ‘Out of Handel’s Shadow’: these all have their place in our search for the English soul.

Our annual festival is the Rijksmuseum of music, where a thousand years of early repertoire come to life. Such a centre of enrichment and encounter should of course be accessible for more than ten days a year, and we are. So leaf through the brochure to the concerts in the Early Music Season, which takes place all year round in The Nether-lands and Belgium. Cheers to that!

boughton house

The central source of inspiration for this festival - both visually and aurally - is Boughton House, a stately home to the north-east of London. The house belongs to the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, a direct descendant of the Dukes of Montagu. He still lives in the castle with his family.

The original Tudor building, crowned by the typically English forest of chim-neys, had a new façade in the French style added to it at the end of the 17th century. Daniel Marot, the Huguenot who fled to the Netherlands and who later travelled to London with King William, worked on Boughton. With so many French influences Boughton lives up to its reputation as the English Versailles. And yet this is every inch an English site, with all the elements – garden, decoration and furnishings – which make a country estate such as this so delightful.

In many different ways we are integrating the atmosphere of Boughton House into the Early Music Festival: in the design, in images, and in sound, since music from the Montagu Collection of Boughton House can be heard almost every day.

The Montagu Music Col lect ion in Boughton House

from the duke’s library

Boughton House will be recreated in sound at the Early Music Festival during a concert series of music from the House’s library. The greater part of the collection was compiled in the 18th century, and offers us an insight into the Montagu family’s private entertainment, and also of the London theatre and concert scene.

Composers such as Byrd, Purcell, Handel and Bononcini are amply repre-sented, with keyboard music, operas and vocal works. Some of the music is well-known, some is now being given the chance to be rediscovered. The Boughton library also houses the choreographies of Baroque dances, inclu-ding some created by famous dance master Anthony L’Abbé, who was the dance teacher of the Duke’s granddaughters.

During the concert series ‘From the Duke’s Library’ you have the chance to enjoy this music and dance. Some favourite pieces from the collection contain personal annotations or playing instructions from the 18th century. Wherever possible our festival musicians will play these unique variants.

vox luminis lionel meunier

Lionel Meunier and his ensemble Vox Luminis have over recent years worked their way to the very forefront of the early music scene. Their international success is not least due to their frequent appearances in Utrecht. We are therefore extra proud to be able to present Vox Luminis this time as artist in residence.

Their residency kicks off with a programme based around the much-loved Funeral Sentences for Queen Mary. Two days later they appear again, now together with Jean Tubery’s La Fenice (25 years old this year), in a concertante performance of King Arthur. In another concert they perform Tudor polypho-ny, with music by Tallis, White and Tomkins. In their final concert Vox Luminis will sing the Triumphs of Oriana, which were dedicated to Elizabeth I.

And then there is another extra: Vox Luminis is providing the musical element of our Eventalk, thus creating a daily moment of reflection [NL: óf creërt een moment… óf zorgt voor een moment…?]. The conclusion of the Eventalk series will happen in grand style, with a performance of Tallis’ 40-part motet Spem in Alium.

During the Renaissance the innumerable English cathedrals with their mag-nificent fan-vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows formed the backdrop for the polyphonic masses and motets of Taverner, Tye, Sheppard, White and many others. Their music also features largely in the Early Music Festival.

The 16th century, the Tudor period, was one of the most turbulent ever in England. The political and religious climate was constantly changing, but culture flourished as never before. The establishment of the Anglican Church by Henry VIII rendered in one fell swoop an entire repertoire of Latin motets and masses unusable. Under the monarchs who succeeded him England regularly changed religious denomination. This demanded quite a degree of adaptability from composers.

In this festival we are giving particular prominence to Thomas Tallis, the father of Anglican Renaissance polyphony, and William Byrd, a pupil of Tallis and possibly England’s greatest composer of the 16th century.

Around 1500 the viola da gamba, which had originated in Italy, arrived in En-gland. As early as 1520 the first gambists in consort formation appear on the king’s payroll. The term consort refers to both the music ensemble, usually with five or six musicians, and to the musical genre. The instruments in a consort are often all of the same type, for instance gambas or recorders, in different sizes. A ‘broken consort’, on the other hand, consists of all possible combinations.Consort music originated in vocal polyphony: as well as dance music, con-sorts played existing vocal compositions. Later on composers wrote specifi-cally for consort. Even so, vocal melodies did sometimes serve as the cantus firmus for a polyphonic instrumentation, for instance in the In Nomine.

Of the various dance forms the pavane and the galliard are the best-known. During this festival consorts can be heard every evening at 22.30, rounding off each festival day. But also at other times, in small or large numbers and in different formations: with gambas, recorders, singers and even keyboard instruments.

The keyboard composers of the late Tudor and Jacobean periods are known as the virginalists. The harpsichord, or virginal, was ideally suitable for virtu-oso playing. The repertoire consists of fantasias, In nomines and numerous dances such as pavanes and galliards.

The most important source of the virginalists’ music is the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, named after Viscount Fitzwilliam, who in 1816 donated his collection of manuscripts to Cambridge University. The collection features the music of composers central to this festival: Byrd, Bull, Farnaby, Tomkins and Gibbons.

The line-up for our virginalists series consists of the finest harpsichordists of the moment, including Laurent Stewart, Bob van Asperen and Carole Cerasi. As the icing on the cake we have added another spectacular concert: Skip Sempé, Pierre Hantaï and Olivier Fortin will play three keyboard instruments in consort.

Henry Purcell, known fondly as ‘The English Orpheus’, occupies a unique position in the pantheon of composers of the British Isles. Many of his contemporaries will have envied him his talent for writing such sensual and attractive music. But this same Purcell also wrote the most bizarre and shoc-king dissonants.

Purcell studied with John Blow, who in 1669 stepped down from his post as organist of Westminster Abbey in favour of his brilliant pupil. We have exqui-site church music by Purcell, but he is best known for his theatre music. In an England festival it might appear obvious to make Handel its glorious central figure, but this great import-Englishman long ago secured his position in the major concert halls. We’d therefore rather devote attention to his less well-known contemporaries, who have been overshadowed by Handel. Among his colleagues – and rivals – we find native Englishmen such as Avison, Boyce and Stanley, Italians working in England, such as Bononcini and Geminiani, and the Dutchmen Fesch and Hellendaal. Their music is given a voice in this festival.

However, we don’t ignore Handel completely: there also exists much re-pertoire of his that is seldom heard. This includes his keyboard works and violin and traverso sonatas. So we have programmed a dozen concerts under the motto ‘Out of Handel’s Shadow’. On Sunday 6 September the prominent musicologist Peter Holman will study this theme in more depth during the Summer School.

eventalk Choral Evensong is a strong tradition in English cathedrals: at the end of the afternoon a spoken reflection is wreathed in choral music – the Anglican vespers. During this Early Music Festival we are presenting, in close collabo-ration with the Centre for the Humanities of the University of Utrecht and the Residenties in Utrecht programme, a secular version of evensong, which we have called Eventalk.

The spoken element of Eventalk is being entrusted to thinkers and artists. They will make a short, inspiring presentation with a twist, like an intellectual haiku. Artist in residence Vox Luminis will provide a musical interlude. Anyone who has ever seen a facsimile of a manuscript or early edition of Renaissance polyphony will know that deciphering mensural notation is no simple exercise. But apart from the fact that these sources often look so beautiful, with or without illuminations, it is also an ingenious system for notating polyphony in a very precise manner.

Professor Francesco Luisi, who is co-ordinating the new Palestrina edition in Rome, is giving a 5-day course on mensural notation and the transcription of music from the 15th and 16th centuries. It goes without saying that the focus is on English music. Students will acquire in-depth knowledge about notation systems, and will actively work on transcription exercises. The course will also deal with many aspects involved in the making of editions and the creation of a critical apparatus.This is not a course for absolute beginners, some experience of reading mensural notation is required. However, students, musicians and those interested in significantly expanding their in-depth knowledge may prepare themselves for one of the most intensive and informative weeks of the year. By the end of the course students will have gained experience in preparing a critical edition, complete with footnotes and commentary.

In just a few years the harpsichord summer course held in Montisi, Tuscany – a medieval village in the hills around Siena – has grown to become the most important extracurricular teaching event for up-and-coming keyboard talent.In Montisi it’s all about the masterclasses: Gustav Leonhardt was guest profes-sor during the early editions of the course, and now the team of permanent professors includes Skip Sempé, Christophe Rousset, Ketil Haugsand, Menno van Delft, Pierre Hantaï and Bob van Asperen. During the free hours intense study is combined with the enjoyment of sun, pasta, olive oil and wine.

This year an extramural edition of Piccola Accademia is taking place during the Early Music Festival. In the morning the students take part in a concentrated and demanding masterclass, after which there is time to enjoy something that is possible only in Utrecht: being ‘infected’ by five or six different concerts while wandering through the historical city centre. For the students Utrecht becomes the site of total immersion, where contact with each other, with the teachers and with the hundreds of festival musicians is the great source of inspiration.

You can also enjoy it all: the masterclasses are open to the public. For keyboard freaks it is the chance of a lifetime to attend lessons given by this year’s three professors, Pierre Hantaï, Skip Sempé and Bob van Asperen. But in fact eve-ryone who is interested in Baroque music will gain new insights during lessons of this sort.

STI MU-symposium 2015

the past is a foreign country…

This year the STIMU symposium poses a stimulating question: what can early music performers and researchers learn from anthropology and ethno-musicology?The question has been conceived as broadly as possible. Traditions from folk music and their appropriation by Early Musicians constitute a first field of research. Ethnomusicological self-examination, which forces scientists to confront themselves with their own assumptions and conceptions (or preconceptions), is a second topic, one which is crucial for an honest inter-pretation of the source material. Finally, ideas about collectivity, identity and the human body as a musical archive are also examined.

An international gathering of experts will descend upon Utrecht for this symposium. These include Rebekah Ahrendt (Yale University), Anne Smith (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis), Willemien Froneman (University of KwaZulu-Natal), Drew Edward Davies (Northwestern University) and Jerrold Levinson (University of Maryland). Young researchers will be involved in a forum to present their recent research, and they have a chance of winning the STIMU Prize.

carillon festival The Early Music Carillon Festival is celebrating its 5th anniversary! For the fifth year in a row a carillon concert will take place every day in the centre of Utrecht, this year with exclusively English programming.

The carillon concerts will take place in between the other concerts in the Early Music Festival, so that the carillon music will accompany you on your way to your next concert venue. If you feel like sitting down to listen, you can do so at Flora’s Hof (corner of Domplein and Servetstraat). Do you want to listen in even greater comfort? A voucher which you can pick up in the Festival Centre in TivoliVredenburg entitles you to a special offer at two restaurants near the Dom Tower. And of course the free carillon programme of the day will be handed out at the location.

It goes without saying that Utrecht’s city carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig will play a major role in the Early Music Carillon Festival. And true to tradition she has also invited several prominent colleagues to take part. Young and up-and-coming talent can be heard during the carillon fringe.

openingThe consort music of the late Renaissance is the best example of the miraculous inventiveness of the English genius. With minimal resources - a handful of musicians, a few simple instruments – a musical world comes to life where open movement, rhythm and dance is interspersed with moments of sweet melancholy. This year the opening concert will not feature a large orchestra with trumpets, but an intimate group of the best viol players of our time, in the delightful company of the ten best musicians of Hespèrion XXI.

As every year, the opening night will kick off with a carillon concert and the bells of the Dom Tower. Moreover, there will be an important visitor from England: the Newcastle Kingsmen, a renowned group of British dancers, will give a stunning performance with flashing swords.

The viola da gamba came into being in Italy around 1500, and, once it had crossed the Channel, became a huge hit in England. During Elizabeth I’s reign the gamba was the instrument of professional court musicians, but

from the early 17th century onwards the instrument became increasingly popular among enlightened amateurs. The golden age of consort music – preferably with a complete set of gambas being played simultaneously – had dawned, with composers like Holborne, Dowland, Gibbons and Ferrabosco. To claim that Jordi Savall has almost single-handedly been responsible for a broader ac-ceptance and popularity of the consort repertoire is scarcely an exaggeration. For this opening concert he has selected dances and instrumental polyphony from the time of Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I.

The most striking aspect of English music of the 17th century is the tension in the harmony: at crucial moments the voices chafe against each other, or a ‘blue note’ sounds. This caused the 18th-century musicologist Charles Burney to call these clashing sounds ‘beastialities’. Charles Avison did not mince his words. In his Essay on Musical Expression(1752) he dared to criticize his im-mensely popular colleague Handel. By doing so he practically caused a public riot. Not much of Avison’s music is heard in concert halls these days, except perhaps his 12 Concerti Grossi after Scarlatti. In this programme we will hear his virtuoso sonatas, inspired by Rameau’s Pièces de Clavecin en Concert. Václav Luks, last year an artist in residence, is tackling this music, and that promises fireworks!

Utrecht’s city carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig will make the Hemony carillon in the Dom Tower warble with suites and symphonies by English Baroque composers. In Boyce, Blow, Croft and Purcell she has chosen four figures with a strong sense of drama.

Utrecht Bellringers GuildBell ringing & walks

The Utrecht Bellringers Guild will liter-ally be (b)ringing the bells of the entire city centre to life. It will begin with all fourteen bells in the Dom Tower, which can only be heard simultaneously a few times a year. Then bells in other chur-ches will join in, so that the bell music fans out over the entire city. At 12.15 two walks start from the Domplein, led by guides who will keep a close track of the bell relay.

Laurent StewartVirginalists: Gibbons and Dowland

In our virginalists series we get the ball rolling with the great poet among the harpsichordists of today: the Frenchman Laurent Stewart. We’ll hear keyboard music by Orlando Gibbons,Gentleman of the Chapel Royal under James I and organist of Westminster Abbey. Gibbons’ polyphonic fantasias can be heard alongside dances which bear his typical, melodious signature. Dowland’s contribution consists of ar-rangements which a contemporary of his made of his melancholy lute pieces.

Benjamin BagbyBeowulf

Precisely 25 years ago the festival pro-grammer of the day, Jan Nuchelmans, invited the American medieval speci-alist Benjamin Bagby to create a pro-duction based around the Old English epic Beowulf. It became a big success, and this England-themed festival na-turally cries out for a revival. The story of Beowulf and his struggle against the monster Grendel was handed down in a manuscript from the 10th century, but audiences were probably already listening to this tale centuries earlier. As if we were sitting together around the hearth: this is how Bagby compels us to follow the story, accompanying himself on an Anglo-Saxon harp.

Camerata TrajectinaDowland in Holland

Dowland’s popular First and Second Booke of Songs and Ayres (with lute) did not go unnoticed in the Dutch Repu-blic. Thus the Remonstrant minister Dirck Rafaelszoon Campuysen made a ‘cover version’ of Dowland’s well-known Flow my teares, with his own tekst: ‘Traen, oogen, traen’ (‘Weep, eyes, weep.’) Many others would do the same. The seven singers and instrumentalists of Camerata Trajectina present the most remarkable examples of English influence in the Netherlands.

Stile AnticoSheppard: Media Vita

Stile Antico is celebrating its tenth birth-day. During those ten years this English group has gained a reputation as the most exciting Renaissance ensemble from the other side of the Channel. The six-part and extremely expressive Media Vita, a reflection on the fragility of human life, forms the centrepiece of their programme based around the bril-liant Tudor composer John Sheppard, who was employed by the Chapel Royal. Maybe it is as a result of the inade-quate availability of his music that this original composer is today much less well-known than his contemporaries Taverner en Tallis, whose equal he is.

‘This is the best Baroque orchestra of the moment’, Jos van Immerseel recently let slip in reference to Ensem-ble Cordia. As a recommendation it’s worth a lot. And now the group from South Tyrol is appearing for the first time in Utrecht, under the direction of Baroque cellist Stefano Veggetti. They are breaking a lance for William Boyce, Master of the King’s Music under George II and III, publisher of the sacred music of Byrd and Purcell and composer of anthems, odes and symphonies. Today it’s the turn of his symphonies – inventive, cheerful and simply delightful.

Vox Luminis / Lionel MeunierPurcell: Funeral Sentences

Artist in residence Vox Luminis begin their residency with an exclusively Purcell programme based around Queen Mary II. Best-known is the music for her funeral. Mary died on 28 December 1694, at the age of 32, of

smallpox. Her husband and co-regent, the Dutch Prince Willem, was incon-solable, as were many of her English subjects. For her theatrical funeral on 5 March 1695 in Westminster Abbey Henry Purcell, only a few months befo-re his own death, wrote the impressive and moving Funeral Music for Queen Mary and the elegy O dive custos.

Mariana Flores and Hopkinson Smith round off this festival day with an inti-mate concert of songs and lute pieces by John Dowland and Thomas Morley. After Dowland had been refused a job as court musician, he left England. The experiences he had during his travel through Germany and Italy left traces in the lute songs he composed at that time. His often melancholy songs were also very popular on the Continent.

Do you like to sing? ‘Shape note sin-ging’, also called ‘Sacred Harp’, is the most democratic choral singing in the world. Cath Tyler is leading this work-shop about a form of singing which has its roots in 16th-century England. The principle is based on solmization – singing on fa, sol, la and mi – which makes it unnecessary to be able to sight-read. The energy with which the music, often English folk songs, is sung is impressive. Singers from the interna-tional Sacred Harp community are also participating in these workshops.

Doctor Bull – he received his doctorate in Cambridge – worked at the Chapel Royal of Elizabeth I, and under James I was appointed music teacher to the king’s children. Nonetheless, in 1613 he fled, ‘without licence’, to the Conti-nent, never to return to England. Bull went to work for the Austrian governor general Albrecht in Brussels, and later became organist in Antwerp. He got to know Sweelinck; one of Bull’s fan-tasias is even based on a theme of the Dutchman’s. Bob van Asperen presents a personal anthology choen from Bull’s oeuvre.

Precisely 25 years ago the festival pro-grammer of the day, Jan Nuchelmans, invited the American medieval speci-alist Benjamin Bagby to create a pro-duction based around the Old English epic Beowulf. It became a big success, and this England-themed festival na-turally cries out for a revival. The story of Beowulf and his struggle against the monster Grendel was handed down in a manuscript from the 10th century, but audiences were probably already listening to this tale centuries earlier. As if we were sitting together around the hearth: this is how Bagby compels us to follow the story, accompanying himself on an Anglo-Saxon harp.

Huelgas Ensemble / Paul Van NevelThe Eton Choirbook

The Eton Choirbook dates from the beginning of the 16th century, and is the most important source of English polyphony from the Tudor era. The manuscript was used daily in the presti-gious Eton College during the Salve. The collection contains 92 often vir-tuoso settings of the Magnificat, Salve Regina and Marian motets in the so-called English florid style. The Huelgas Ensemble juxtaposes the Stabat Mater by John Brown with other breathtaking works by William Horwood, John Sut-ton and Robert Wilkinson.

Joey Brink studied carillon and mecha-nical engineering at the University of Yale (USA) and is at present pursuing his studies further with D’hollander in Lake Wales, Florida. Brink won various prizes for his playing, including first prize in the International Carillon Competition Queen Fabiola in 2014 in Mechelen. In this programme he will play arrangements of works by Byrd, Dowland and Purcell.

The Czech Renaissance ensemble Cap-pella Mariana was the great revelation of the Early Music Festival 2014 – Habsburg. The singers (including Hana Blažíková and Tomáš Král) are returning this year with motets which the Roman Catholic William Byrd published in 1589 as ‘non-liturgical chamber music’, but which were actually designed to hearten his oppressed fellow-Catholics. Thomas Tallis’ Salvator Mundi rounds off the programme..

Ensemble La Rêveuse completes the programme with divisions or series of variations by the Moravian gamba virtuoso Gottfried Finger, who worked at the court of James II.

Father of Musick is how Charles I des-cribed his favourite composer William Lawes. His royal consorts are daring and very modern-sounding chamber music: Lawes deliberately pushes the boundaries of harmony, part-writing and rhythm. The gamba consort Phantasm has recorded the four-part consorts. They put poetry, passion and expression first, with respect for the underlying logic of the dance.

The Restoration of the English monar-chy, when after the fall of Cromwell Charles II came to the throne, marks an era during which English music the-atre experienced a remarkable heyday. Purcell is the most significant exponent of this genre. Katherina Lindekens discusses both the ‘dramatick’ and the ‘all-sung’ opera genres in the light of Purcell’s works, and analyses the roots of Restoration opera in the masque and French opera. Lindekens studies literary theory and is a musicologist, and is doing a PhD in English opera.

In this masterclass a select number of young ensembles is given the opportu-nity of learning from the best: Laurence Dreyfus is a prominent musicologist and gambist. He is founder of the gamba consort Phantasm, and until recently taught in Oxford. Dreyfus deals with different aspects of consort playing in the light of works of English Renaissance composers.You can observe the whole process. At 14.00 there is a closing presentation.

Sust one bow stroke separates our world from that of Nicola Matteis, according to the French violinist Amandine Beyer. Matteis was the first notable Italian violinist to make a career for himself in England. He arrived in London in about 1670, and he is associated with the start of the English preference for the Italian style of violin playing. Matteis was a virtuoso sound wizard, and his music induces an almost magical alienation. The bizarre rhythms and harmonies make his charming dances exceptionally exciting for today’s listeners.

Furthermore, the Great Suites form a link between Han-del and the Montagu family of Bough-ton House: the copy of Handel’s harp-sichord suites which can be found in Boughton House was probably lesson material for Lady Mary, the daughter of the Duke of Montagu, for her harpsi-chord lessons with John Ernest Galliard. At the court of Henry VIII the organetto and clavisimbalum were still being used extensively, although these Gothic instruments were by then in fact a tad old-fashioned. The patriotic libretto by John Dryden is not about the Arthur Sagas as we know them, but depicts the fierce conflict between the Britons of King Arthur and the Saxons, often with a humorous undertone. Purcell’s setting is brilliant: lively, full of merry

dance music and beautiful arias, such as Fairest Isle. Wizards, knights, sirens and elves: in the capable hands of La Fenice (25 years old this year) and artist in residence Vox Luminis, this colourful spectacle is guaranteed to provide a concert evening not to be missed.

Thomas Tomkins continued composing English polyphony in the same vein as his teacher William Byrd. At the same time he played with the expressive innovations that blew over from Italy. This makes Tomkins the great in-novator of English music between Byrd and Purcell. The gambists and singers of Hathor and Pluto draw on Tomkins’ oeuvre and juxtapose consort playing with consort singing.

Paul Boucher is curator of the Montagu Music Collection of Boughton House. The remarkably eclectic collection contains musical and dance repertoire from the 16th century onwards, but the greater part of the collection was compiled in the 18th century. It is a very personal collection, which offers us a unique view of a family’s private entertainment, but also of the London theatre and concert scene.

The English Dancing Master

In Purcell’s day it was not unusual to use popular melodies from theatre and opera for other purposes. For example, the upper middle class found it a pleas-ant pastime to dance contredanses to this music in ballrooms. A well-known source of this repertoire is Playford’s The English Dancing Master, which contains numerous choreographies. During this workshop you will dance The Hole in the Wall, found in this collection and set to music by Henry Purcell.

Vittorio Ghielmi & Luca PiancaSimpson: Upon a Ground

Luca Pianca and Vittorio Ghielmi re-ally are born musicians, and as a duo they are unequalled. Their programme explores one of the best-loved English forms of improvisation: the ground. The structure of the piece is provided by a short, repeated motif in the bass part, upon which others improvise. Thomas Simpson, the son of a cobbler, wrote some of the most virtuoso grounds of the 17th century for the most popular instruments: the lute and the viola da gamba.

Bononcini

Giovanni Battista Draghi and Giovanni Bononcini are two of the many Italians who came to England in the 17th and 18th centuries. Gianbattista Draghi ar-rived in 1662 and caused a sensation as a keyboard player. As far as Bononcini is concerned: it took the English until 1720 to persuade this world-famous star to come to London. The Ital-ian harpsichordist Luca Guglielmi juxtaposes Bononcini’s Divertimenti da camera with suites by Draghi.

Les Corps Éloquents present dances by the Paris-ian choreographer Anthony L’Abbé, who performed for the English king in London in 1698, to music byJean-Baptiste Lully. L’Abbé was also dance teacher to the granddaughters of the 1st Duke of Buccleuch.

Wilbert Berendsen is cantor and organ-ist of the Martinikerk in Doesburg and studies carillon in Utrecht. He will play works by English composers of the 16th and 17 th centuries: arrangements of vocal polyphony by Thomas Tallis and Christopher Tye; pavanes by William Byrd and John Dowland and Music for a while by Henry Purcell.

If more of Christopher Tye’s oeuvre had withstood the ravages of time, he would now definitely be as well-known as Thomas Tallis. Tye worked at King’s College Cambridge and Ely Cathedral, but later in life also became teacher and advisor to King Edward VI. As a prominent court musician with Protestant leanings Tye was one of the most influential composers of his day. But speech is silver, singing is golden: Cinquecento pays homage toTye and illustrates why he deserves his place among the greats of the English Re-naissance.

Scorpio Collectief / Simen van MechelenWilliam Byrd: England and the Continent

It is fascinating to see how the English around 1600 were hostile to every form of Roman Catholicism, but at the same time, as far as music went, had an insatiable appetite for everything Italian. William Byrd, who incidentally remained faithful to the Pope, did not develop his style in isolation from what was happening in Europe. Together with Reinoud Van Mechelen, Scorpio Collectief presents consort music, songs and madrigals by Byrd, Dowland and Continental colleagues such as Vecchi and Lassus.

The special instrumentation, with cornetts and trombones, is modelled on James I’s His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts.

Evensong is a strong tradition in English cathedrals: at the end of the afternoon a concise, spoken reflection is wreathed in choral music. During the Early Music Festival we are presenting, in close collaboration with the Centre for the Humanities of the University of Utrecht, a secular vespers, which we have called Eventalk. Today Dr Ernst van den Hemel, UU, will discuss Rederi-jkers (Rhetoricians), Religious Protest and Musical Rebellion. Artist in residence Vox Luminis will provide a musical intervention.

Gabrieli Consort / Paul McCreeshPurcell & Britten: Three Odes for St. Cecilia

Our modern ears are so used to the rich sound of a Baroque orchestra that we can scarcely imagine what an impression Purcell’s Hail, bright Cecilia must have made: probably for the first time in English music all the orchestra parts were obbligato. It is a festive and extrovert ode to Cecilia, the patron saint of music. Benjamin Britten, pos-sibly England’s best-loved composer af-

ter Purcell, became fascintaed with the piece. His Hymn to Saint Cecilia con-tains elements from Purcell’s music, such as the ground bass. Britten wrote this ode during his perilous voyage from America to Europe in 1942, and it is a virtual miracle that he was able to compose such brilliant, vital music in such circumstances. The Gabrieli Con-sort rounds out this festive programme with Purcell’s early work Welcome to all the Pleasures, which was commissioned by the London Musical Society for St Cecilia’s name day in 1683.

Ensemble MasquesConsorts: John Jenkins

Ensemble Masques, in whose ranks we find favourites such as Sophie Gent, Julien Léonard and Olivier Fortin, focuses here on consort music by John Jenkins, a carpenter’s son and virtuoso on the lyra viol. In 1642, under pres-sure from the Civil War, Jenkins moved from London to the country, where he composed more than seventy suites for domestic use.Masques supplements Jenkins’ elegant music with consorts by Thomas Tomkins and Matthew Locke.

The harpsichord summer course held in Montisi in Tuscany has in a few short years grown to become the world’s most important extracurricular harpsi-chord school. Summer school: Julia Muller-van SantenNetherlands v. England

Julia Muller, musicologist and woman of letters, discusses various aspects of the relationship between England and the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The Protestant religion was willing to reconcile, but trade interests led time and again to war. At the same time full-scale cultural cross-pollination occurred. In the 17th century there were no fewer than three English or half-English courts in The Hague where Dutch and English musi-cians and actors performed. And in the 18th century Willem de Fesch and Pieter Hellendael left for England.

Choreographies based on his music were published in 1711 in a well-known collection of dance master Edmund Pemberton’s. FantasticusJohn Jenkins: The excellence of hand

The art of dividing up: the term ‘divi-sion’ refers literally to the practice of dividing notes up into virtuoso orna-ments. In England this practice was especially popular, particularly for the viola da gamba and the lyra viol. Few composers were so at home in this rep-ertoire as John Jenkins, who in terms of virtuosity makes things hot for his per-formers. Ensemble Fantasticus is the chamber music ensemble of the young violinist Rie Kimura, harpsichordist Guillermo Brachetta and the gambist Robert Smith, who all graduated in Amsterdam.

Henry Purcell was both preceded and succeeded as organist of Westminster Abbey by his musical idol John Blow. The keyboard music of both these great figures is strangely enough scarcely known. Richard Egarr is rectifying this with a re-cital of the characteristic music of Blow and Purcell, full of splendid eccentrici-ties in both melody and harmony.

Rien Donkersloot studied carillon with Roy Kroezen and Frans Haagen, and rounded off his training with distinction in 2011. He has won first prize at several carillon competitions. Donkersloot is city carillonneur in Haarlem and Goes, and chief organist of the St.Joriskerk in Amersfoort. On the Hemony carillon in the Dom Tower he will play works by Byrd, Purcell and Sweelinck.

The establishment of the Anglican church by Henry VIII rendered in one fell swoop an entire repertoire of Latin mo-tets and masses virtually unusable. The demand for new music brought about an explosion of creativity. Thomas Tallis preferred to stay loyal to the Roman Catholic church, but was so well-liked that with some degree of pragmatism he was able to keep working. Dunedin Consort / John ButtJohn Blow: Venus and Adonis

The Dunedin Consort (from Din Eidyn, Edinburgh Castle) is Scotland’s pride and joy when it comes to Baroque music. John Blow’s Venus and Adonis is his only work for music theatre. And that is actually a shame, since his often highly chromatic music for this tale of

doomed love is charming, funny and poignant. Blow wrote this masque for the enjoyment of King Charles II. The piece, which premiered in 1683, became the model for Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Before the interval the Scots will treat us to music by Lawes, Gibbons and contemporaries.

The gamba consort Spes Nostra of Jerome Hantai has chosen for this programme works from ‘A booke of In nomines & other solfainge songes’ (1570), which is preserved in the British Library and which is the only known source for a number of works. The book contains arrangements of originally vocal music, including several In nomines. An inti-mate concert of music by Parsley, Pres-ton, Parsons, Holborne and Dowland.

The music library of Boughton House contains numerous treasures, including chamber music by Handel. Just as with his operas, his great strength here lies in melody. Violinist Bojan Ci i and harpsichordist Maude Gratton will play Handel’s too seldom performed violin sonatas and a sonata from Corelli’s opus V, as immortalized in the portrait of John, Marquis of Monthermer, in Boughton House.

Catalina VicensVirginalists: Giles Farnaby

Farnaby, an almost exact contemporary of Shakespeare, did not work at court, and, unlike Byrd, Bull and Gibbons, his music was not published in chic editions. Understandable, since Farnaby was… a carpenter. But then what is the explanation for the fact that one sixth of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book is made up of music by Farnaby? A hypothesis: the manuscript was compiled by Francis Tregian, who languished in prison for years because he was a Roman Catholic. Farnaby called on him in order to provide maintenance for his harpsi-chord, and in the process gave Tregian his poetic music as a present. .

Singers from the former Capilla Fla-menca have united to form La Capilla, and the quality of their musicmaking is just as high as it was. They will today, with lute accompaniment, investigate the world of John Dunstaple, the most famous English composer of the 15th century. His life is a mystery, but he probably spent a considerable time on the Continent, where interactions oc-curred with, among others, Dufay.

on carillon

Frank Deleu studied art history and archaeology in Ghent, and later carillon in Mechelen. He is city carillonneur in Bruges and Damme and gives concerts at home and abroad. Today he plays works including arrangements of lute music by van John Dowland and music from The Fairy Queen by Purcell.

The Tudor period, between 1485 and 1603, was one of the most turbulent ever in England. Under Henry VIII, Mary I and Elizabeth I the political and religi-ous climate was constantly changing, but culture flourished as never before. John Taverner worked for Henry VIII, the founder of the Anglican church; William Byrd for Elizabeth I. The Tallis Scholars, after their fantastic concert last year, are once again Utrecht’s guests, this time with Taverner’s Western Wynde Mass en Byrds Tribue Domine.

Orpheus Brittanicus

The South African star recorder player Stephan Temmingh is sometimes called the new Frans Brüggen. Together with the German soprano Dorothee Mields he is presenting songs by Purcell and other works from the Boughton House collection. In Boughton can be found a well-thumbed copy of Purcell´s posthumous anthology Orpheus Britannicus in which during the 18th century favourite songs had been marked with strips of paper.

La Risonanza / Fabio BonnizoniEccles’ Semele

How would history have looked if the opera Semele, with libretto by William Congreve and music by John Eccles, had actually been given its premiere in 1707? This English opera is the worthy successor to Purcell’s music theatre. It would have provided formidable com-petition for the new-fashioned Italian

operas which were rapidly taking over the London stage. But that’s not what happened: Semele was not rediscovered until the 20th century. So it’s high time for a closer acquaintance, provided by La Risonanza, under the direction of Fabio Bonnizoni, internationally acclai-med for their Handel recordings, plus a cast of top soloists.

Evensong is a strong tradition in English cathedrals: at the end of the afternoon a concise, spoken reflection is wreathed in choral music. During the Early Music Festival we are presenting, in close collaboration with the Centre for the Humanities of the University of Utrecht, a secular vespers, which we have called Eventalk. Prof. Wiljan van den Akker (UU) will speak about Poetry, Flamenco, Improvisation, Creativity. Artist in residence Vox Luminis will provide a musical intervention.

Mezzaluna / Peter van Heyghen & Paul O’DetteChamber music for the Tudors

The six recorder players of Mezzaluna and star lutenist Paul O’Dette recon-struct a concert evening such as the Tudor monarchs Henry VIII, Edward VI or Elizabeth I might have experienced. In their private apartments they could hear consort and lute music by court composers such as Philip Van Wilder, both Ferraboscos, Daniel Bacheler and Augustine Bassano. To these Mezzaluna adds works from the Fitzwilliam Wind Manuscript.

The harpsichord summer course held in Montisi in Tuscany has in a few short years grown to become the world’s most important extracurricular harpsichord school. For the first time this Piccola Accademia is coming to Utrecht. Les Basses Réunies / Bruno CocsetHume’s love of the lyra viol

The lyra viol, the cousin of the bass viol, was in the 17th century the favou-rite instrument of many English peo-ple, and above all of army officer and composer Tobias Hume. He found the lyra superior to the lute, which earned him a reprimand from Dowland. But with the lyra’s wealth of colours, strings that could be played simultaneously and a whole variety of tuning options, Hume wrote expressive and ‘humor-full’ music. (His best-known anthology was sub-titled Musicall Humors.) Guido Balestracci and Bruno Cocset play lyra viol and viol, with Richard Myron on bass and Bertrand Cuiller at the harpsichord.

Carole CerasiVirginalists: Thomas Tomkins

Thomas Tomkins wrote most of his keyboard works late in life – and he reached the grand old age of 84. The outbreak of the Civil War in 1642 put paid to his being choirmaster of Worcester Cathedral. Writing pavanes, grounds and fancies, purely for his own pleasure, was all that was left him in his last years. Carole Cerasi, former student of Kenneth Gilbert and Gustav Leonhardt, is the ideal performer for this intimate repertoire.

With her striking appearance and crystalline voice soprano Anne Azéma evokes the world of Albion, the England of the Middle Ages. Shira Kammen accompanies her on the vielle (fiddle) and harp, in dramatic tales of life and death, and in sensual songs, such as the medieval legend of the man in the moon. Azéma and Kammen are both involved with Boston Camerata, one of the pioneering ensembles of the early music movement in the USA.

The Laboratory: the art of choosingWith Lidewij van der Voort and Kris Verhelst

The early music musician has to choose between different kinds of source, and between sometimes controversial or mutually contradictory accounts of how music was performed in the past. In this open rehearsal different interpretative options will be tried out in accordance with the dif-ferent sources, using music of Corelli as the testing ground. As a listener you will be able to follow how by means of this complicated and inspiring process an ‘authentic’ interpretation is created, which furthermore fits the individual personality of the modern musicians. In this concert Malgosia Fiebig, city carillonneur of Utrecht and Nijmegen, plays works by Thomas Tomkins, Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Chilcot and Jeremiah Clarke. Clarke was a pupil of John Blow in the Chapel Royal and is the real composer of the well-known Trumpet Voluntary.

Doulce Mémoire / Denis Raisin DadreA mass for peace

The election in 1519 of the Spanish king Charles V as Holy Roman Emperor created a mega-empire, which drove France into the arms of the English. The two kings François I and Henry VIII met each other in 1520 at the ostenta-tious Field of the Cloth of Gold, where as well as peace talks numerous tour-naments were held, with music adding lustre to the occasion. Doulce Mémoire reconstructs a mass with both English and French contributions from Ludford and Sermisy, at that time young talents with whom the kings could show off.

Vox Luminis / Lionel MeunierMezzaluna / Peter van HeyghenThe Triumphs of Oriana

In 1601, in honour of Queen Elizabeth I, Thomas Morley published a collection of madrigals by no fewer than 23 dif-ferent composers. Each madrigal ends with an ode to Oriana, as Elizabeth was fondly known. Because so many composers contributed to the antho-logy, including Morley and Tomkins, it provides a fascinating picture of the development of the English madrigal according to Italian models. Artist in residence Vox Luminis is joined by recorder quintet Mezzaluna.

Just prepare yourself for the fact that during this concert you will find it hard to sit still: when Sempé and company play dances by Anthony Holborne, William Brade and Michael Praetorius,

sparks will fly. Terpsichore is the name of both the Greek muse of dance and the collection of dances which Praetorius published in 1612, with dances from different parts of Europe. During this colourful evening filled with galliards, pavanes and bransles, played by changing combinations of strings, winds, lutes and percussion, you’ll imagine yourself at the dazzling court of Henry VIII. The formation is that of a ‘king-sized’ consort.

Barokksolistene / Bjarte EikePurcell in the pub

Since the Middle Ages the pub has been the second home of the English. Following the closure of many theatres under religious pressure in the 17th century, these pubs were transformed into genuine ‘Musick Houses’, fre-quented by composers such as Henry Purcell. The Norwegian Barokksolistene will hold a Baroque jam session with traditional folk music, compositions by Purcell and colleagues, plus vir-tuoso musical duels – totally in the atmosphere of the 17th-century pub. The combination of melancholy and humour, hilarious anecdotes and fan-tastic musicianship is simply irresistible. And just keep that beer flowing!

Ebullient London attracted many foreign composers. Among them were the German George Frideric Handel, the ‘Swedish Handel’, Johan Helmich Ro-man, and the Italian Francesco Gemini-ani. Musica ad Rhenum will play music by these expats, from the Boughton House collection, including pieces from a newly discovered manuscript. Virtuoso arrangements of Handel arias will be heard for the first time since the 18th century, and perhaps also an unknown prelude by the master himself.

Ursula DütschlerVirginalists: William Byrd (I)

The most significant revolution for which William Byrd is responsible per-haps concerns his keyboard music. Be-fore Byrd it was mainly simple dances and arrangements of vocal music that were played on the harpsichord, but the ‘father of Musicke’ emancipated the instrument. The revolution does not lie so much in Byrd’s strong coun-terpoint, unexpected harmonic twists and turns and exciting rhythm, but in the conceptual and idiomatic way of thinking: the content and possibilities of the instrument itself determine the form. The finest examples of this are to be found in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, from which harpsichordist Ursula Dütschler has made a selection.

Water MusicChildren’s production 3+

The Water Music, one of Handel’s best-known compositions, was performed in the open air during a royal boat trip on the Thames, on 17 July 1717. In this children’s production two musicians recreate this musical voyage by means of two buckets of water, Wellington boots, an oboe and an accordion. Who wants to come along on a boat trip to England?

Dialogos / Katarina LivljaniSwithun of Winchester

This afternoon you will be swept along by medieval specialist Katarina Livljanic and her ensemble Dialogos as they recount the highly imaginative tale of the medieval cantor Wulfstan. Three very furious furies beleaguer him in frightening dreams, but he is saved by St Swithun. Wulfstan’s virtuoso poem about his experiences is wreathed with the very earliest medieval polyphony from the Winchester Troper (c. 1050). This manuscript contains several com-positions dedicated to St Swithun, who 100 years after his death was venerated as a hero.

Paul O’DetteSemper Dowland

John Dowland’s music was already in his own day exceptionally popular: his work was published not only in England but throughout Europe. Dowland’s life, however, was marked by disappointments, hence his motto Semper Dowland semper dolens: always Dowland, always in pain. But although his melancholy music is best-known and loved, there was another side to Dowland. Lute legend Paul O’Dette will therefore play both the famous Lachrimae and some less well-known, cheerful lute pieces such as Mrs. Vaux’s Jigge and A Coye Joye.

Officium Ensemble / Pedro TeixeiraThe golden age of the Tudors: Byrd

and Tallis

The vocal ensemble Officium is one of the most prominent groups in Portugal. Officium illustrates the wealth (both material and cultural) of the Tudor era in the light of the four-part mass of Byrd and motets of Tallis. Both compo-sers were singers of the Chapel Royal. They remained faithful to the Roman Catholic religion and had somehow to survive in a changeable religious and political climate. In that respect they more than succeeded – Elizabeth I granted them the privilege of having their own music published. Out of gratitude Tallis wrote his Miserere nostri for the 17th anniversary of Elizabeth’s accession.

Barokksolistene / Bjarte EikeThe Image of Melancholy

The alliance between melancholy and music is ancient. Since time im-memorial we have believed that music has the power to influence our feelings – to temper our sorrow, or indeed to reinforce it. In this very personal concert Bjarte Eike combines the sad consorts of Dowland and Holborne with Norwegian melodies. The result is a chastening, meditative experience.

L’Arpeggiata & Voces8 /Christina PluharPurcells Dido and Aeneas

Anyone who missed last year’s concert by L’Arpeggiata is getting another chance! Whatever repertoire Christina Pluhar tackles, it turns into musical gold, and that will be no different with Purcell’s Dido. Purcell probably wrote his opera for the girls of the Boarding School for Young Gentlewomen in Chelsea, which accounts for the large

number of female roles. The plot is loosely based on Virgil: the love between Dido and Aeneas comes to a tragic end when a sorceress incites Aeneas to abandon Dido. The lament that Dido sings before she dies is one of the best-loved arias ever written. Pluhar has reconstructed the prologue by drawing on other works of Purcell.

The charming consort songs by William Byrd might well have been written for the flexible voice of the Swedish so-prano Maria Keohane. With a soprano for the ‘dittie’ and a viol consort for the ‘harmonie’, Byrd combines the light style of the popular Italian canzonetta with the more complex polyphony of the French chanson. Keohane can nestle on a bed of viol sound.

The stereotypical view is that Handel dominated the English music scene in the 18th century, and that English composers could not compete. Peter Holman, scholar in residence, offers an alternative vision: Handel was certainly not the only important immigrant, and there existed a specifically English idiom which foreign composers were only too keen to make their own.

and Jenkins

The language of 17th-century English chamber music, so different from the extrovert virtuosity of the 18th-century Italian Baroque, can be spoken only by excellent musicians. In this concert, filled with the poetry and the fire of the 17th century, the line-up consists of three musicians who are totally at home in this music. The English tenor Charles Daniels, violinist Lidewij van der Voort and theorbist Fred Jacobs present a programme of songs by William and Henry Lawes, suites from the anthology For Several Friends by Matthew Locke and instrumental airs by John Jenkins.

The final Eventalk of this festival, on this occasion in the early afternoon, is also the opening of the Cultural Sunday Uitfeest (where cultural institutions present a preview of their coming season). Today a special programme: a mystery guest will be both introduced and bidden farewell with a double per-formance of the 40-part Spem in alium by Thomas Tallis, conducted by artist in residence Lionel Meunier.

According to Martin Le Franc (c. 1440) and Johannes Tinctoris (c. 1477) 15th-century English music, and above all that of John Dunstaple, exerted a great influence on composers on the Continet. Dunstaple has, since being rediscovered at the start of the 20th century, become the most famous son of medieval England, but La Morra illustrates by means of song, flute, harp, lute and vielle (fiddle) that so much more of what originated on that side of the Channel made an impact in continental Europe.

It is at the keyboard that William Byrd developed a remarkable language of his own. Many of his younger contem-poraries imitated his style, but lacked the necessary inventive and intellectual capacity to equal Byrd’s multi-layered rhetoric and virtuosity. The Finnish harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen has chosen Byrd’s mature fantasias and pavanes from the first decades of the 17th century.

Henry VIII was a fervent art-lover who attracted musicians and composers from all over Europe, and the musical king composed his own songs, of which the best-known is Pastyme with good company.

The Early Music Carillon Festival will be rounded off by city carillonneur Mal-gosia Fiebig, with arrangements of lute works by John Dowland, such as The Frog Galliard and Farewell, and secular songs by Thomas Tallis including O Ye Tender Babes. In addition she will perform music by Matthew Locke and Christopher Simpson.

for the Duke of Marlborough

Music from the Boughton House collection: the marriage in 1705 between John Montagu and Mary Churchill, daughter of the 1st Duke of Marlborough, joined two wealthy and powerful English families. In 1722 Bo-noncini, Handel’s rival in London, wrote When Saul was Kind as funeral music for Marlborough, and a copy of the score, annotated ‘Ex Dono Sigr Bononcini’, is preserved in Boughton. Cappella Am-sterdam will supplement this splendid anthem with Lord, let me know mine end by Maurice Greene and As pants the hart by Handel.

The Italian Alfonso Ferrabosco Sr. brought the madrigal to England, where in 1562 he entered service with Elizabeth I. His refined and modest madrigal style was perhaps not so extremely expressive as that of Maren-zio or Luzzaschi, but maybe that was precisely the reason why he was able to win the hearts of the English. Specially for this occasion the fresh voices of RossoPorpora join forces with Menco-boni’s Cantar Lontano. And whenever Marco Mencoboni undertakes some-thing, you can be sure it will become an adventure.

Gli Angeli Genève / Stephan MacLeodFinal concert: Thomas Tallis

Every single concert given by bass Stephan MacLeod’s vocal ensemble Gli Angeli Genève is a sensation. They conclude the Early Music Festival 2015 with a programme built around Thomas Tallis, who worked at the Chapel Royal for 40 years. The motet Loquebantur variis linguis (‘they spoke in

different tongues’) is almost symbolic for the various monarchs’ altering reli-gious persuasions which required Tallis to adapt his music. Stephan MacLeod is guaranteed to give you goose pim-ples with Tallis’ most beautiful motets, including the Lamentations and the Miserere. The timbre will be enriched by Renaissance recorders – a practice that dates back to the 16th century. It is with pride that we announce that Gli Angeli Genève will be artist in residence of the Utrecht Early Music Festival – La Serenissima – In 2016.

Sometimes you can also purchase tickets and / or make a reservation through a local organization; details are specified by the locations concerned. For concerts in Belgium, you can only get tickets from the locations themselves.

Order onlineTickets can be bought online through the concert calendar. You can use your log-in details or create a new personal account. Accepted methods of payment are credit cards for internati-onal guests and iDEAL for Dutch bank account holders. The administration fee per ticket is € 1,50, with a maximum of € 7, 50 for each separate order. When the concert is within 5 days of ordering, the tickets will no longer be sent: during the Festival you can pick up the tickets at the concert venue, and during the Season your confirmation e-mail will count as your ticket.
