President’s Message
Welcome to a new year with the
UWS! I am so excited to be serving as
your President this year, and I hope I
we will all be able to enjoy this journey
together! Here's a little about me: I
have spent the better part of the last
two years of my life in a tidying
marathon in my home. Definitely a
marathon for me, not a sprint! After
reading The Life Changing Magic of
Tidying Up by Marie Kondo in 2015, I
was inspired to get my house, and my life, in order, and I started my “tidying
event.” Along the way, I have created an art studio, been selected for
inclusion in two gallery exhibitions and a local gallery to show my work, and
achieved UWS Signature Member status (Woot!).
I have also created more welcoming and comfortable spaces in our home.
But, most importantly, I have learned to surround myself with joy! The
KonMari method is all about learning what “sparks joy” in your life, and
surrounding yourself with only things that bring you joy.
Watercolor brings me joy. Even the worst day painting is better than a full day
of doing things that leave you feeling uninspired. That’s not to say that I am
always inspired while painting, but I always feel more fulfilled at the end of a
painting session than I do after a productive day of office work.
I have been a member of the Utah Watercolor Society since 2003. In that
time, I have served on several Board positions and I have also been able to
avail myself of several of the activities offered by UWS. Entering exhibitions,
taking workshops, going to Paint Outs, and attending monthly meetings have
all provided me with valuable experiences that have helped me get to new
levels with my art. But, most of all, the past 14 years in UWS have brought
me joy!
I hope you will make yourself aware of all the opportunities your UWS
membership has to offer. Attend the monthly member meetings where you
will be witness excellent demonstrations by skilled artists free of charge!
Attend the monthly Paint Outs when you can. (Even if you’re not a plein air
painter, you will get to know some of your fellow members and practice some
skills.) Take a mini workshop. Take a full workshop. Enter our exhibitions!
The UWS allows you to surround yourself with like-minded people in all
stages of the artistic journey who will be supportive of your artistic endeavors.
I hope this UWS year is marked with fun and trying new things for each of
you. Most of all, I hope you find joy in the process!

2017 UWS Signature Status Members
Congratulations to our new UWS Signature Members.
Linda Flannery, Barbara Kidd, Roland Lee, and Jennifer Love received award certificates and Blick gift
cards in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
Achieving this goal was important to me because it allowed me to know that my work was improving, and that that was
being recognized by a variety of nationally recognized jurors. Signature status in any society lends a level of credibility
to your work that can help current and potential collectors know that they have made a good investment when
purchasing your art. The UWS has one of the most difficult set of requirements for achieving Signature status.
Achieving that level represents one of the most challenging accomplishments you can achieve among the various
societies in the United States. It is a goal worth working for!
A Patchwork Fall is the painting that won an award for me in my application for Signature Status.
Jennifer Love
I am excited to finally be getting my Signature Status. Although it has taken a long time, I can see how much I have
grown in my painting skills as I have established my style of painting.
Linda Flannery
I am so happy to finally receive my signature membership. I was accepted into my first UWS exhibit in about 1980 but
over the years didn't participate in many UWS events. I started up again in about 2005 with a goal to achieve
membership status if I could. It has taken me 12 years since then to get in enough shows to qualify. As a signature
member of National Watercolor Society, and others, I can honestly say the Utah Watercolor Society is the hardest of
them all to receive signature status in. But it is so worth it. The friendships I have made and the association with other
watercolorists has enriched my life immensely. Thanks so much.

I joined UWS over four years ago, just after completing a 2-Day mini-workshop. I loved the experience so much I
decided to really get involved. At that time, I had no idea what it meant to become a Signature Member. What I did
know, though, was that I wanted to stretch and challenge myself artistically. Since then, I have entered every UWS
exhibition and have taken many UWS-sponsored workshops. I'm thrilled to have earned my Signature Membership and
look forward to enjoying many more years painting with this amazing group of artists.

The 2016-17 President, Ann Galt,
had the honor to award Honorary
Memberships. This is not done
every year. Honorary Memberships
relate to UWS service. They
automatically go to Past Presidents.
Not all who do remarkable service
for UWS are Past Presidents, and
service comes in many different
forms. This year Ann wanted to
recognize a person who she hoped
would one day become President.
This year ’ s Honorary Member,
Mary Pusey, is a devoted UWS
member – always there – willing to
take on more and more, to learn, to
teach, to participate, to lead, and to
serve. She has had many roles for
UWS – Exhibition Chair,
Communications Chair, and now our
Newsletter Editor. Ann has loved
working and painting with her. She
has a passion for watercolor and

Did you know that UWS participates in
an annual travel show? For several
years, the Utah Division of Arts &
Museums director chooses paintings
from the UWS Spring Open Exhibition,
the best of UWS water media.
Utah Arts & Museums ’ Traveling
Exhibit Program is a statewide
outreach program that provides
schools, museums, libraries, and
community galleries with the
opportunity to bring curated
exhibitions to their community. This
program is supported in part by a
grant from the National Endowment
for the Arts. Utah Arts & Museums is a
division of the Utah Department of
Heritage and Arts (DHA).
According to Fletcher Booth of the
Utah Arts & Museum ’ s Traveling
Exhibition Program, the travel show
has been around in various forms
since the late 1960's. In the 70's it
became a permanent program of the
Utah Arts Council. I'm not sure how
long we have worked with UWS but
I've seen paper that goes back to the
mid '80's. We've partnered with

high school show since it started 45
years ago.

Held outdoors on the grounds of Robbers Roost on a beautiful evening, catered by the Broken Spur, and entertained by
Stacy Board, the crowd attending the auction could only be satisfied as they meandered through the paintings.
This year, in addition to historic sites, RPR Ranch and Bingo Farm were added to the painting options in Wayne
County. Of course, Capitol Reef National Park was a must for at least one submission. In addition to painting, the
week included an optional tour to Cathedral Valley, a Gallery Stroll in Torrey, the artists’ dinner at the Broken Spur, a
talk at Robbers Roost and a demo in the Park both by Suze Woolf and a recap breakfast at the Capitol Reef Inn.
The theme was water. Flash floods were a bonus! In that light, Donna Pence of East High School led 4th graders in
painting gesso panels of their own water themes at Ripple Rock. UWS volunteers assisted. The panels were displayed
at the auction and will be hung at Ripple Rock in Capitol Reef National Park for public viewing. The panels are
fantastic!
Thank you to Maura Naughton, Chair, for her dedication, devotion, and organization skills. Maura recruited Suze Woolf,
a terrific, out of the box artist. She describes herself as an artist who paints with watercolor. Visit Suze Woolf’s website
to learn more about Suze and her art. Thanks also to volunteers: Maggie Harrison, Kay Hale, Linda Flannery, Mary
Pusey, Brenda Brunello, Blaine Clayton, Ann Galt, and Pat Leake. Thank you to Entrada Institute, Marci Milligan and
her staff, for co-hosting this event.
Enjoy this interim Arts and the Park Slideshow. When all the images of the paintings are received, we will create a
slideshow for your enjoyment.
Well…another successful year!—the art, the scenery,
the weather, the auction, the entertainment and the
artists. Arts and the Park just keeps getting better and
better.
From May 30 – June 4, UWS 28 artists came, painted,
framed, entered and attended the 4th Annual Arts and
the Park: Light on the Reef event. Eighty –one
paintings hung. Suze Woolf, guest artist, along with
Pat Priebe and Susan Snow judged for awards. Paul
Ollig, Acting Superintendent of Capitol Reef National
Park presented the awards. Marci Milligan, Entrada
Institute, organized the local event.

Meeting RECAP
The Utah Watercolor Society
enjoyed a full-on party for our last
meeting of our fiscal year,
complete with a wonderful pot luck
buffet provided by the great cooks
of our organization. And of course
we had popcorn and punch. The
visuals were large Mylar balloons
on our tables and the slideshow
running of the current Western
Federation of Watercolor
Societies show. Some artists
brought their great plein air
paintings to display too. There
were also some raffle prizes!
Most importantly, this was the
member’s opportunity to vote for
our UWS 2017-2018 President.
Jennifer Love was nominated and
voted in unanimously. Her
selection for Vice President was
Julie Ickes who was also
nominated and received
unanimous yea votes. The
meeting was then turned over to
Jennifer, who announced the new
board for next year, who were also
voted for and whose names are
listed elsewhere in this newsletter.
Colleen Reynolds was unable to
attend our meeting, so Maura
Naughton presented Ann Galt with
the traditional past president
pin/pendant. Then we had the
pleasure of watching a video that
Ann had created, which included
photos and some interviews from
events of the past year, including
paint outs, exhibition awards, and
workshops. In addition, we got a
glimpse into the very recent Arts
and the Park, through a slideshow
by Ann Galt.
Signature members were
announced and awarded and Ann
declared Mary Pusey as an
honorary member.
Thanks to everyone who pitched in
to help with set up and clean up
after our event. Many hands make
it so one person isnt left with a
huge burden! We look forward to
another wonderful year and hope
everyone has a great summer with
a lot of spectacular painting!
UWS Paint Spot July/August 2017 8
What an informative and fun week
we had with national instructor, Janet
Rogers, leading our UWS Spring
workshop! Janet’s wonderfully loose
approach to florals and people looks
deceptively easy, yet there is an
important planning process that goes
into each of her paintings. She broke
it down for our group of students in
an easy-to-follow manner.
Janet started the week out by
explaining her first triad and second
triad of primary colors, and showed
the students how she mixes her
colors to come up with her basic
palette. Then, the first two days
focused on color swatches and
painting flowers from fresh bouquets
to help the students loosen up, find
freedom in their brushstrokes, and
get used to mixing their colors.
The rest of the week focused on
people and portraits, with the
importance of having a correct
drawing. Janet broke down the
process of drawing faces for
portraiture, demonstrating various
parts of the face structure as well as
entire faces. Then she demonstrated
her technique of applying and taking
away color until satisfied with the
shading and hue.
The workshop culminated on the
final day with a live model for several
hours holding pose for quick figure
studies. Then the students were
allowed to work on finishing their
other projects from the week. Janet
was a generous instructor, trying to
make sure she made time to walk
around to give feedback and help to
each student in the class on each
day, often working straight through
her lunch hour to make sure every
minute was utilized well. A final
“show and tell” session on Friday
afternoon allowed each student to
see what the others had produced as
well as get helpful feedback about
the work from Janet. Some amazing
paintings were produced from the
workshop students of all skill levels,
and all walked away with a greater
knowledge of mixing primaries in
their color palette as well as great
information about facial structure and
color application techniques.
Janet Rogers WorkshopRECAP
Our UWS May member meeting
was a thrill for all attending as
well as for those who watched
from a distance via Facebook
Live. Janet ’ s humor and
comfortable nature made her
presentation fun and easy to
follow. She pre-sketched her
portrait demonstration and started
the member meeting out with an
exciting portrait demonstration
featuring brilliant color and
exciting movement. She followed
the portrait with a painting from
live flowers, showing the
audience that you don’t have to
exactly recreate your floral
subject – just use the flowers as
inspiration and create a painting
that excites you!
UWS members and non-
members alike were amazed at
the two magical and beautiful
paintings that were created in the
space of 90 minutes!
Thank you to Janet for your
generous presentation and
sharing of information!

What an honor it was to represent
this Utah Watercolor Society at the
2017 Western Federation of
Watercolor Societies annual
exhibition. Thank you for this
amazing opportunity. As an active
volunteer and board member for
many years now, this is most
certainly a highlight for me! Thanks
to all the delegates who have gone
before and the amazing quality of
the art we always submit, we are
well regarded in the larger national
watercolor sphere. This year we
really outdid ourselves with 11
juried artists and FIVE awards!
Paintings by Gail Alger, Brienne
Brown, Lori Burchinal, Kristi
Grussendorf, Jeffrey Johnson, Lola
Kartchner, Maura Naughton, Irene
Rampton, Ian Ramsay, Colleen
Reynolds and Kathy Sutherland
currently hang in the prestigious
Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on
the University of Oregon campus in
Eugene and will be on display until
June 20, 2017. A special
congratulations goes to Lola for
earning her signature status AND
honorable mention. Gail, Irene &
Ian also received honorable
mentions. The big prize went to
Lori Burchinal (thanks to her
daughter for insisting she be there
to accept her award!) whose
painting received the David Gale
Memorial Award (essentially 2nd
place!) UWS members in
attendance, along with myself, were
Colleen (alternate delegate),
Maura, Lola, Lori and Gail, who,
also sold her painting!
The requisite WF delegate
business meeting was led by Susan
Morris of the Southern Arizona
Watercolor Guild (next year’s host
in Tucson!) The Watercolor
Society of Oregon was a generous
and hospitable host; they offered a
wide array of workshops,
demonstrations, art activities & an
art materials fair for the delegates,
participating artists and guests.

UWS - CVC President's Message
When I was young, the greatest thing in
the world was to have a new box of
crayons— the big box with every color, all
99 or more, every color in the world in
one box. It would even have a crayon
sharpener on the back. Oh, the things I
would try to create. Today I have a pallet
with colors like yellow ochre, cobalt blue
and cadmium red light, paper, brushes,
pencils and sketch pads. I am one of a
Cache Valley Society of water media
painters. We have all seen the catalogs
with every color, every brush and every
paper imaginable with constant new
introductions to consider. These tools,
however, are not as important as
something else; we each have a unique
inner artist that emerged with our use of
crayons or, when older, as we picked up
a brush to paint or a pencil to draw.
Our unique inner artist drives us to pick
up the artist's tools. Though unique to
each person there are some common
threads: a hunger to say something, the
need to explore, to represent what we
see, a need to express a feeling, etc. The
key to the unique nature of the inner artist
is a person's choice of purpose for
creating. That might be to convey a
religious feeling, a deep awe of nature, a
complex philosophical/artistic idea or
simply to show a bug on a leaf, blues in
the sky, or the face of a grandchild. The
purpose can be as simple as the joy felt
while painting or drawing. An artist either
knows what his/her purpose is, finds it by
pondering, or feels it unfold during the
artistic process. Summer, with its warm
weather, long days, vacations and visits
to friends and families, can offer
moments to practice our art and think
about why we create.
It all started with a couple of crayons, or a
few tubes of paint and a brush, along with
an inner need to create. Our unique
inner artist is focused by understanding
our purpose. Knowing our purpose
helps us create artwork that is true to
ourselves.
