DAT QUESTION OF THE DAY
What is the difference between a transport protein and a channel protein?
A. Transport proteins can only function via active transport.
B. Transport proteins are often used by many substrates while channel proteins are generally used by ions.
C. Channel proteins are often larger than transport proteins.
D. Transport proteins are often larger than channel proteins.
E. Transport proteins are simpler than channel proteins.
Correct Answer: B. Transport proteins are often used by many substrates while channel proteins are generally used by ions.
Both of these types of proteins have a large variety in their shapes, sizes, and complexities. Therefore, no generalization can be made about them, and [C], [D], and [E] can be eliminated. Many transport proteins can use passive transport as well via uniport, for example, so [A] can be eliminated too. This leaves [B], where it states that channel proteins are used generally by ions. They aren’t called “ion channels” for nothing!
CURRENT EVENTS IN DENTISTRY
Exploring Novel Approaches to Inhibit Bone Loss
Date: October 2, 2015
Source: American Dental Association
• Periodontal disease can cause severe bone loss in the jaw and thus tooth loss, however, a new experimental treatment method may prevent this from occurring.
• An experiment performed by Shin and his team showed studies examining the potential of a protein known as DEL-1 to affect bone loss. Initial experiments with mouse and human bone cells demonstrated that the protein inhibited their bone resorptive function.
• They then induced periodontitis in the teeth of monkeys. One half of the monkeys’ mouth received treatment from the protein, whereas the other half of the mouth acted as the control.
• After six weeks, they observed greater maxillary bone heights and lower levels of proinflammatory cytokines on the DEL-1 injected side as compared with the control side.
• This method is still being tested because of uncertainty towards the efficacy and safety of this protein for ameliorating periodontal disease-related bone loss in humans, ongoing research on DEL-1 may be of interest to dentists.
