    General Course InformationPre-requisites, Co-

    requisites, & other

    restrictions

Prior completion of a 2000 level studio arts course is required. (ARTS1301 does not satisfy this requirement.)

    Course Description

In this 35mm black and white photography course, students willinvestigate how a sequence or series of photographs builds meaning.Common examples in everyday life, such as comics, the advertisingproduct catalog, photomontage, and the photo essay, all utilize more thanone image to communicate an idea or message. Similarly, thephotographer locates correspondences among individual frames exposedin succession when shooting roll film. By moving from an emphasis on

the single photograph to a combination of images, different methods forprinting and for image presentation, including mounting, bookmaking andsculpture/installation, can be explored.

This course combines an investigation of the process of black and whitephotography with a study of serial imagery. Operation of the camerainvolves an awareness of its mechanical limitations in order to facilitatethe recording of light and fosters an understanding of optics. Students willlearn camera operation for proper film exposure and darkroom techniquesfor film development and print enlargement. Assigned reading and classdiscussion will address contemporary issues in art and photography.

    Learning Outcomes

Students will interpret photographic concepts and apply photographicmethods to create artworks, with an emphasis on black and whiteprocesses. They will assess and evaluate the creative work of their peersthrough both written and verbal critique.Students will discuss and write about both historical and contemporaryexamples of visual art,and they will choose and develop a proposal for an individualphotography portfolio, which they will create.

    Student Conduct

    and Discipline

The University of Texas System and The University of Texas at Dallas have rules andregulations for the orderly and efficient conduct of their business. It is theresponsibility of each student and each student organization to be knowledgeableabout the rules and regulations which govern student conduct and activities. Generalinformation on student conduct and discipline is contained in the UTD printedpublication,A to Z Guide, which is provided to all registered students each academic

    year.

The University of Texas at Dallas administers student discipline within theprocedures of recognized and established due process. Procedures are defined anddescribed in theRules and Regulations, Series 50000, Board of Regents, TheUniversity of Texas System, and in Title V, Rules on Student Services and Activitiesof the universitysHandbook of Operating Procedures. Copies of these rules andregulations are available to students in the Office of the Dean of Students, where staffmembers are available to assist students in interpreting the rules and regulations (SU1.602, 972/883-6391) and online athttp://www.utdallas.edu/judicialaffairs/UTDJudicialAffairs-HOPV.html

A student at the university neither loses the rights nor escapes the responsibilities ofcitizenship. He or she is expected to obey federal, state, and local laws as well as theRegents Rules, university regulations, and administrative rules. Students are subjectto discipline for violating the standards of conduct whether such conduct takes placeon or off campus, or whether civil or criminal penalties are also imposed for suchconduct.

    AcademicIntegrity

The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academichonesty. Because the value of an academic degree depends upon the absoluteintegrity of the work done by the student for that degree, it is imperative that a studentdemonstrate a high standard of individual honor in his or her scholastic work.

Scholastic Dishonesty, any student who commits an act of scholastic dishonesty issubject to discipline. Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating,

plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that areattributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for anotherperson, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt tocommit such acts.

Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, andfrom any other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the universityspolicy on plagiarism (see general catalog for details). This course will use theresources of turnitin.com, which searches the web for possible plagiarism and is over90% effective.

It is the students responsibility to notify his or her professorsof the need for accommodation. If accommodations are granted for testingaccommodations, the student should remind the instructor five days before the examof any testing accommodations that will be needed. Disability Services is located inRoom 1.610 in the Student Union. The student,so excused, will be allowed to take the exam or complete the assignment within areasonable time after the absence: a period equal to the length of the absence, up to amaximum of one week. A student who notifies the instructor and completes anymissed exam or assignment may not be penalized for the absence. A student who failsto complete the exam or assignment within the prescribed period may receive a

failing grade for that exam or assignment.

If a student or an instructor disagrees about the nature of the absence [i.e., for thepurpose of observing a religious holy day] or if there is similar disagreement aboutwhether the student has been given a reasonable time to complete any missedassignments or examinations, either the student or the instructor may request a rulingfrom the chief executive officer of the institution, or his or her designee.
