This Fall, Union Temple is holding a gala Open House. In fact , September 25-26, the weekend after the HighHoly Days, and right in the middle of Sukkot, will be a whole Open House Weekend. We start off on Satur-day with a special family-friendly Chol HaMoed Sukkot service, complete with youth songleader. On Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., we throw open our doors to the community for a veritable festival of Reform Jew-ish culture.

    Open House highlights include:

A new, outside sukkah to be constructed by Brotherhood possibly mobile, so it can be taken back in-side the building at night.

Decorating the sukkah . At the Open House, the Religious School s and Sisterhood will supervise ourkids in creating harvest-themed decorations and hanging them in the new sukkah .

Raffle for all attendees. One lucky congregant (or prospective member) will win a discount off Templemembership or Religious School tuition.

Tours. Temple Administrator John Golomb will reprise his ever-popular trek through the hidden spacesof our vast edifice. And our intrepid 7 th graders, experts by now, will lead a guided tour of the ReligiousSchool.

Activity tables showing off all the programs and activities going on at the Temple, including AdultEducation, Social Action, the Religious School, the Fourth Fridays program, family services, the artsat Union Temple, and more.

Guest tables. Weve invited the Eastern Athletic Club and the American Cancer Society, our friendlytenants, to set up shop at the Open House and promote their services. Does everyone know that Templemembers get a significant discount at the health club? They will now.

Goodie bags. Union Temple is providing eco-friendly grocery bags, emblazoned with our logo, forfree, so our visitors can carry all the literature they pick up at our displays.

Schmoozing with the Rabbi. Guests can take a moment to sit and chat with Rabbi Goodman, perhapsover coffee, in a comfortable corner of the Social Hall.

    Coffee and bagels. What else?

Save the date Sunday, September 26, 2010!

After a long, simmering summer, it is pleasant to turn our thoughts to the cooler days of autumn and the hope-ful days of our coming new year. Sisterhood hopes that, despite the record-breaking heat, you had a happy andeventful summer that has left you rested and ready to join us in an exciting new season.

As always, Sisterhood is entering this time of hope and renewal with plans for stimulating programs that will bea delight and will broaden our horizons. In addition to our popular Rosh Chodesh Seders, we have many sur-prises in store for you, so watch this space and your mail for more information. We hope you'll be with us for allour events. You'll find that they are very special times of warmth, friendship, and sharing. So be good to your-self, and if you are not yet a part of our warm circle of friendship, please join now. If you are already a member, please renew promptly. It's as simple as writing a check for $36 to Sisterhood of Union Temple. Think about itfor only double chai you can perform the mitzvah of bringing hope and help where they are needed by addingyour voice, your heart, and your hands to ours, as together we reach out to perform tikkun olam .

We are pleased to announce the election of Peggy Lebenson as Sisterhood's new treasurer. We thank PurlaineLieberman for her years of hard work and service in that office, and we welcome her to our board. With great

joy, we congratulate our Co-President Susanne Singer and Henry Singer on the birth of their beautiful new

granddaughter, Shira, sister of the adorable Adi Emma, and daughter of Bonnie and Lior Shine.Sisterhood wishes everyone a happy, healthy, successful New Year. May 5771 be a year of peace in our hearts, our homes, and our world. L'Shanah Tovah!

Join Sisterhood for a Stimulating Year

Shanah Tovah ! And welcome back from your summer activities. I hope they wereall enjoyable.Brotherhood has an active year planned. On Sunday morning, September 19th(the day after Yom Kippur), we will start off with one of our favorite Brotherhoodactivities, building a sukkah. And of course there will be bagels and coffee, and talk about our plans for the coming year. The following Sunday, September 26th , Un-ion Temple will have a membership open house. Brotherhood will be participating,to talk about our activities and invite new members to join us.

I will be leading a book discussion about the novel Homesick by Eshkol Nevo onSunday, October 3rd . Its the first example of contemporary Israeli fiction in ourBrotherhood book discussion series. The novel focuses on the lives of several peo-

ple in a small town between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv: two students who have justmoved in together, their landlords (a young couple with two kids), an Arab construc-tion worker whose family lived in that house until they fled during Israels war of independence, and a familyacross the street whose older son died fighting in Lebanon. The characters take turns narrating the story, oftengiving different viewpoints of the same events as they interact. And of course, everyone is welcome to cometo our book discussions (even if you havent read the book, though I recommend it!)

I look forward to seeing you at all of our Brotherhood activities and events.

On behalf of the entire congregation, Rabbi Goodmanthanks and commends those congregants who con-ducted Shabbat services this summer.

Thank You to OurSummer Shabbat Leaders

    Religious School

New Leadership at the Religious SchoolThe medieval Jewish philosopher, Maimonides, wrote in his great work, Mishneh Torah :

The Sages say, "Much wisdom I learned from my teachers, more from my colleagues, from my pupils most of all." Even as a small piece of wood kindles a large log, so too small pupils can sharpen the minds of their

teachers, so that by the students questions, they elicit glorious wisdom.I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity to serve as the new educator at Union Temple, where I will buildon the excellent work of my predecessor, colleague and friend Ann Landowne.

A short biography: My parents did not belong to a synagogue nor keep a Jewish home, apart from Hanukkahcandles and the occasional Passover seder at a relatives house. My Jewish learning began when my two sonsstarted religious school at Congregation Beth Elohim. When I brought Ben to his kindergarten class, I wouldlinger, exploring the classroom; finally, his teacher invited me to work as her student aide. With the children, Ilearned Jewish holidays, history and prayer. Continuing my learning, I earned two master's degrees, in Jewisheducation and in Bible, from the Jewish Theological Seminary and I am a candidate for rabbinic ordination, with Ann, at Hebrew Union College -Jewish Institute of Religion in May, 2011.

I have a deep hunger to understand the ways of the world and, after much searching, I discovered Judaism asthe path to do so. I bring to my task as educator this profound need to learn, to teach and to do. As Maimonidessays, teaching is a great way to learn. I anticipate with joy learning with you and your children.

I welcome all your questions and concerns. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] .

    Lshanah Tovah Tikateivu

May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a good year.
