Hello everyone, and welcome to our very first issue of our chapter newsletter, THE FEDERALIST. This is our first issue and it will take some work and feedback from you all about what you think of the newsletter. We can not im-prove if we do not hear from you! Its your newsletter and what each of you put into it is what we all get out of it. AS we move forward, I know I want to see more things such as articles about items in the news about Medicine, Science, and Technology etc. I look for-ward to hearing from you. STARFLEET Database Issues! Right of the bat, let me tell you for those who may not know that STARFLEET has had a major da-tabase problem for the past week. The Computer Operations Team has been working hard to get eve-rything fixed, but it is going slow. What had happened is that the company that hosts the STAR-FLEET site “Dreamhost” did an update to their server but failed to tell Fleet what they were doing. I heard tonight that STARFLEET is planning on going to a new com-pany to host our data and website and we should hear more about it in November or December. But with these issues are also problems with renewals and new joins. Currently ther online appli-cations is not working correctly so

you will have to snail mail your ap-plication and send a check or money order. Chapter T-Shirts As you look at page 12, you will see the initial T-Shirt design for

the Chapter. Please look it over and let me know what you think. If you have any ideas or alterations, please show us. This is the time for the crew to give input in the design of the ship T-Shirt. The color of the shirts are based off of Star Trek: TNG and the Ma-rines Black is the color of the SFMC. We did this to keep down the number of color options and cost. As for the patches, They can be purchased from the STARFLEET Quartermaster (STARFLEET Logo Patch) and from the chapter itself (Department Logo Patch). The com badge is going to be either a resign prop or an embroidered patch. As for the Ship’s logo we are looking at a transfer that can be ironed on or something to that extent.

My intent is to have a real pho-to of the Chapter Duty Uniform Shirt by the next issue of the newsletter. I have the patches already being shipped and I have a proto-type transfer for the logo. And the company we would go with is the same that most of use are familiar with since it’s the same that the USS Helen Paw-lowski uses. Community Service and other activities As a reminder, since we are a correspondence chapter that what ever you do as individuals can be reported in to the chapter and then rolled-up to become chapter activities and events. So if you recycle at home, each month tell us what the approx. weight was for each type items such as glass, cardboard, paper, etc. But its not just limited to recy-cling. If you do things like donate blood or participate in telethons or walks/runs. There are many different activities and events that can also be reported in such as trips to museums or galleries or as simple as the zoo etc. All you have to do is tell us. A plus is when you do tell us, they can be used towards promotion points and even awards. I hope you enjoy the issue and I look forward to our next one around January. To all hands: Message from the XO. As of late, the XO's office has been fairly quiet. For most of us, we are in the third month of our Shakedown Cruise. Hopefully we will be done before the traditional 9 month time frame. On my front, I've been finishing the website, and getting us filed for the Vessel Readiness Program (got the certs back) and the Marine Unit Readiness Program (still waiting on our certs). Even though it seems like we've done a lot these past few months, we must press on to continue to prove ourselves. Your probably wondering how we do this. As individuals, we can continue to take STARFLEET Academy & Ma-rine Corps Academy courses. At

Starfleet Academy, you may want to look into the Bridge Officer Certifica-tion program if you have selected a bridge post to fill. I am working on cer-tifying myself as an XO & CO.

Community Service is another way to distinguish our chapter. This could be recycling, blood donations, being a Big Brother or Big Sister to a child in need, donating toys to the SFMC Toys for Tots program, etc.

You may also want to find a niche outside of our chapter. Were all good at something. Maybe you can apply to a department of Region 1 or STARFLEET? I am good at publications so I design websites and newsletters. This led to me being recently selected to run Channel One, Region One's newslet-ter. Well, that's about all I got for this month. I can't promise that all will be adopted, but I can tell you that all will be given serious consideration. Email Addresses It is important to remember that Email Addresses no longer appear on the STARFLEET Database. This being the case, it is of vital im-portance that marines check and double check the email address en-tered on any form being sent to the SFMC for any reason. If your email address is entered incorrectly, servic-ing whatever request you are mak-ing, SFMCA Course, Award Certifi-cate request, etc., will be *significantly* delayed. I know that I said this last time, but it bears repeating. Unit OICs are re-minded to make sure you report not only what your unit is doing, but who among your marines is doing it, how long they each are spending on the project, and who such projects are benefiting. Making sure your re-ports are complete and thorough is the responsibility of each OIC. Dailing to do so ensures that deserv-ing marines will not get the recogni-tion they deserve. The next generation of space tele-scopes hunting for signs of extrater-restrial life should focus on water, then oxygen and then alien versions of the plant chemical chlorophyll, a new study suggests. In the past 20 years or so, astrono-mers have confirmed the existence of nearly 2,000 worlds outside Earth's solar system. Many of these exoplan-ets lie in the habitable zones of stars, areas potentially warm enough for the worlds to harbor liquid water on their surfaces. Astrobiologists hope that life may someday be spotted on such al-ien planets, since there is life pretty much everywhere water exists on Earth. One strategy to discover signs of such alien life involves looking for ways that organisms might change a world's appearance. For example, chemicals typically shape what are known as the spectra seen from plan-ets by adding or removing wave-lengths of light. Alien-hunting tele-scopes could look for spectra that re-veal chemicals associated with life. In other words, these searches would focus on biosignatures — chemicals

or combinations of chemicals that life could produce, but that processes other than life could not or would be unlikely to create. Astrophysicists Timothy Brandt and David Spiegel at the Institute for Ad-vanced Study in Princeton, New Jer-sey, sought to see how challenging it might be to conclusively identify sig-natures of water, oxygen and chloro-phyll — the green pigment that plants use to convert sunlight to energy — on a distant twin of Earth using a fu-ture off-Earth instrument such as NASA's proposed Advanced Tech-nology Large-Aperture Space Tele-scope (ATLAST). The scientists found that water would be the easiest to detect. "Water is a very common molecule, and I think a mission to take spectra of exoplanets should certainly look for water," said Brandt, the lead study author. "Indeed, we have found water in a few gas giants more mas-sive than Jupiter orbiting other stars." In comparison, oxygen is more diffi-cult to detect than previously thought, requiring scientific instruments ap-proximately twice as sensitive as those needed to detect water and significantly better at discriminating between similar colors of light. "Oxygen, however, has only been a large part of Earth's atmosphere for a few hundred million years," Brandt said. "If we see it in an exoplanet, it probably points to life, but not finding oxygen certainly does not mean that the planet is sterile." Although a well-designed space telescope could detect water and oxygen on a nearby Earth twin, the astrophysicists found the instrument would need to be significantly more sensitive, or very lucky, to see chlo-rophyll. Identifying this chemical typi-cally requires scientific instruments

about six times more sensitive than those needed for oxygen. Chlorophyll becomes as detectable as oxygen only when an exoplanet has a lot of vegetation and/or little in the way of cloud cover, researchers said. Chlorophyll slightly reddens the light from Earth. If extraterrestrial life does convert sunlight to energy as plants do, scientists expect that the alien process might use a different pigment than chlorophyll. But alien photosyn-thesis could also slightly redden plan-ets, just as chlorophyll does. "Light comes in packets called pho-tons, and only photons with at least a certain amount of energy are useful for photosynthesis," Brandt said. Chlorophyll reflects photons that are too red and low in energy to be used for photosynthesis, and it may be rea-sonable to assume that extraterrestri-al pigments would do the same thing, Brandt noted. The researchers suggest a strategy for discovering Earthlike alien life that first looks for water, then oxygen on the more favorable planets and finally chlorophyll on only the most excep-tionally promising worlds. "The goal of a future space tele-scope will be primarily to detect water and oxygen on a planet around a nearby star," Brandt said. "The con-struction and launch of such a tele-scope will probably cost at least $10 billion and won't happen for at least 20 years — a lot of technology devel-opment needs to happen first — but it could be the most exciting mission of my lifetime." Brandt and Spiegel detailed their findings online Sept. 1 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

As for the MACO Class C uniform, we ear the Urban Tiger Stripe Combat Uni-form. I will hopefully have some pic-tures for you soon as to what and how they are worn. I know RADM Paul Dyl of the USS Helen Pawlowski is working on an Enterprise style but in CAMO for the 119th MACO and as I receive more information about them I will let you know. The last issue to discuss is about the MACO Training. Yes the courses are about 52 in all. But it’s a requirement if you want to be a true MACO. You may be assigned to the MACO unit, but until you complete your training, your a train-ee and not a MACO. Greetings MACO’s! Yes, we have finally become our own MACO unit. The 230th MACO unit will have a Special Operations structure. As we continue to organize ourselves and build the foundation for a good strong unit, I will be looking for an Assistant Team Leader. The As-sistant Team Leader will need to cer-tify as a MACO Team Leader as pre-scribed by the MACO Training re-quirements. Below will be our MACO unit patch.. I can have them made at about $7.00 each and I have to have 25 before I can order. The other patch is the uni-versal MACO patch found at the end of my report. But, after bringing the problem to the atten-tion of the General Staff, I am duly au-thorized to inform you that, unless and until the silver numerals become com-mercially available again, using a bronze or gold attachment ?as is? will be considered perfectly acceptable, and the next edition of the MFM will reflect this. Speaking of the next edition of the MFM - a reminder that the Commandant has informed everyone that any sugges-tions, questions, comments, etc that you may wish to see addressed in the next edition of the Marine Force Manual should be sent in to him ?well ?NOW would be a good time. Please take a moment to go through the current MFM (perhaps for the first time) and jot down whatever notes you feel need address-ing, and email them to the Dant. In 1944, near Littoria (now Latina) in central Italy, despite an artillery duel going on between Allied and German forces, a peasant farmer apparently out weeding his fields stopped to tie his shoes, then shook his fist at the German soldiers about 600 meters away, then at the distant Allied forces, apparently in anger for the interruption and noise, be-fore returning to a nearby farmhouse. That ?peasant? was actually Recon-naissance Sergeant Tommie Prince, a Canadian member of the infamous First Special Service Force - better known as ?the Devil?s Brigade? - and he had used the action of tying his shoes to cover up what he was REALLY doing, namely fixing a break in the nearly a mile of carefully concealed telephone line he was using to report on the Continued on page 18

As I have often reminded you, one of the assigned responsibilities of my office is ?promoting and assisting in the organization of community service activities at all levels within the SFMC,? and THAT was the answer I?d been looking for. Perhaps instead of a gesture, no matter how special or sincere it was, a better way to mark the passing of one of our own might be to find some form of community service related to a cause they sup-ported and do the work they could no longer do. So, I?m going on the record right now as pledging to find some way to help or raise funds for an organization dedicated to helping fight against dia-betes - that disease was a large factor in Tiny?s health problems. It?s not going to be easy, considering the fact that I only get into town once or twice a month usually, but somehow, I?ll find a way. And if I don?t, I?ll at least have tried. Returning to my regularly scheduled report, one of the ?perks? of being an enlisted member of the STARFLEET Marine Corps is the ability to earn and wear the NCO Development Ribbon (aka the NCO Academic Ribbon). This is currently one of the highest rank-ing ?Training Awards? in the SFMC, consisting of the usual white ribbon with a silver ?1?,?2?, or ?3? added to it to designate the level of training at the SFMC NCO Academy passed. But, in the years since this ribbon was added to the awards a Marine can earn, commercial sources for the at-tached numerals in SILVER have completely dried up. It is still possible to find the numeral ribbon attachments in a bronze or gold tone, but, at this time, the silver attachments required seem to be ?unobtainium?. Now, it is POSSIBLE, but not very practical to paint one of the bronze or gold numerals that are still available from the usual sources and make them silver. That would entail first

Greetings Marines! I had this ready to go several days ago, but just before I posted it, I re-ceived the news of the untimely pass-ing of LGN Gary ?Tiny? Hollifield, and I decided to do what amounted to a sub-stantial rewrite. So, with a bit of further ado, let?s head on over to the booth in the back in the corner in the dark of my local NCO club, where there?s a prom-inent sign that says ?Check your weapons at the door? (let?s see ? locked, loaded, safety on ? I?m good) and a snowstorm early this month re-sulted in a few choice words re the Meteorology gang and an uptick in computer queries about ?Tar and Feathers?. When we lose one of our own, the usual sympathy messages in STAR-FLEET and the SFMC often refer to dimming fictional running lights on ves-sels, or the ?Missing Man? formation being done by fictional aerospace craft, or even the lowering of usually fictional flags to half mast, and, don?t get me wrong ? it?s a genuinely touch-ing and heartfelt gesture. But, some-thing about that has always bothered me - it?s ONLY a gesture. I?ve been known to take it a step further out here in the back side of nowhere, taking out a venerable old rifle that actually saw combat in WW2 and firing the ceremo-nial three volleys on the day of a funer-al for a fellow STARFLEET member (please, unless you live out in the boonies like I do, do NOT try this at home), but, at the end of the day, it?s still only a gesture. But, Tiny?s untimely death had me sitting here at my old desk, filling the air with smoke from my favorite briar pipe, trying to find some way to DO something that wouldn?t be just a ges-ture - to find a way to bring some meaning to what I was feeling and to somehow making my personal sense of loss into something positive. And then, my personal musings were inter-rupted by a voice inside my head that reminded me that I had a JOB to do in the SFMC, and I had a ?light bulb?

who attends his/her Brigade's annual muster if that Brigade has one. Not all Brigades do so I understand that this may not be something available to everyone. If you have a specific ques-tion regarding this, please contact me privately and we'll discuss it. The International Service Award [gold/black – no more then one a year] is issued to any member of the SFMC who attends the International Muster held at IC. Based on the above, over a period of one year you could see a Brigade Muster, an International Service or both of these listed on the database, depending on what events you were able to be at in any given year. But you will never see more then one of each in a calendar year. As a quick reminder as to who does what: FORCECOM is in charge of Achievement and Service award en-tries as well as making sure you're in the right unit, etc. If you have any questions about these awards, your Unit assignments or other personnel questions, please send them up the Chain to FORCECOM. TRACOM manages all entries to do with SFMCA courses and Training Awards. If you've completed a course and you don't see it on the database after a reasonable amount of time has past [please give them a few weeks], contact the Director of the specific Branch/School or go up the Chain to TRACOM. Good day, Marines. First off, just a brief comment. Sep-tember is disaster preparedness month here in the US and even though we're coming up on the tail end of the month, this is a topic that really knows no spe-cific date. Throughout the world sea-sons are changing and each region will have it's own climactic events to be on the look out for. Please take a moment and make sure you're ready. Simply search 'disaster planning' on the inter-net and you'll find a lot of guidelines and free checklists to down load. One aspect of readiness is making sure all your important data on your computer is backed up. By 'important', I mean bank records, scans of the front and back of your credit cards, scans of your important papers [wills, mort-gage,car loan, insurance papers, pep information] and such. I know there are more and more folks using cloud back up systems, but also consider the lowly flash drive that you can shove in your pocket, have in your evac bag, etc. Always go big. Just when you think a 16 GB drive will do, you'll find another 3 GB of stuff to store. And if you're like me, a regular bit hoarder, you might consider a portable hard drive and case. Now, on to FORCECOM work. One question that comes across my desk quite a bit right after the Interna-tional Muster is 'I just checked my awards on the database and I don't see my muster award from IC.' Short answer: you do not receive the 'Brigade Muster Award' for attendance at IC, you receive the International Service Award. I know it can seem a bit confusing. Especially if you're one of the lucky ones and the International Conference is being held in your home Region and Brigade. But the names really do define the awards. The Brigade Muster Award [gold/red ribbon – no more then one a year] is issued to any member of the SFMC

was rampant at the time, and unable to cope with life outside the service, he became estranged from his family and alcoholism claimed him. Despite a brief period of public acknowledgement in 1955, when he saved a man from drowning, he withdrew to a lonely life, eventually passing away in a Salvation Army facility in 1977. But, Tommie Prince has not been en-tirely forgotten in Canada. There are streets, schools, barracks, and even scholarships bearing his name now, and in 2010 it was announced that there was a movie in development about one of the most decorated ?First Nations? sol-diers in history. Perhaps somewhere, the spirit of Tommie Prince is resting a bit easier now, even though that recog-nition came a bit too late to help him directly. But, if you take anything away from his story, perhaps you?ll ask yourself the next time you pass by a ragged, home-less veteran ?Was this another Tommie Prince ? another genuine hero fallen on hard times?? and perhaps whatever you say or do may not be too late for them. That com-mander nominated Prince for the Croix de Guerre, but the courier carrying the nomination was killed en route and the medal was never awarded, However, after a gru-eling 72 hours with little rest behind enemy lines, Prince made it back to his unit, reported on the location of the enemy battalion, led his unit back to them, and participated in the attack that resulted in most of the enemy surrendering. For his part in locating and wiping out this substantial force, he was eventually awarded a Silver Star by the Allied command. After World War Two, he returned to Canada, and tried to make a go at civilian life. I?ll spare you the details, but, after some initial success, it didn?t go that well, and when the fighting began in Korea, Tommie Prince re-enlisted in the Canadian Army, at his previous rank of Sergeant. He was later to say "As soon as I put on my uniform I felt a better man." Sergeant Prince earned further honors and served with distinction during the Ko-rean War, despite increasingly painful arthritic knees that removed him from action for long periods during the war. After the war, those knees made civilian life even more difficult for him, and his personal life went downhill again. Fighting against the prejudices against ?First Nations? people that

For this, the young mem-ber of Canada?s Ojibwa tribe was awarded the Military Medal, the citation reading in part "Sergeant Prince's courage and utter disregard for per-sonal safety were an inspiration to his fellows and a marked credit to his unit." Not long after that, the 1st SSF was moved to southern France, and once again the marksmanship, and skill at tracking and moving stealthily through the countryside that Prince had learned as a youngster in and around the reservation in Canada came into play, as he and a private went on a long scouting mission behind enemy lines near the border between France and Italy. He came across an enemy battalion?s encampment, and started back to report on its location when he and his single companion came across a French partisan group engaged in battle with an enemy unit. They stopped to lend a hand, and their accu-rate fire coming from concealment and an unexpected direction drove the ene-my off. When the French commander, glad of the unexpected reinforcements, asked where Prince?s ?company? was, the Canadian Sergeant pointed at the private and said ?Here?, leading the Frenchman to exclaim that he was

In September they recycled 65.0 pounds -Mike Timko & Terri Leavitt participate in ink jet cartridge recycling. In September they sent in 5 used cartridges. - Mike Timko, Terri Leavitt, Emily Leavitt-Timko & Michael Timko IV took a trip to the Animal Safari Park in Port Clinton, Ohio. - Mike Timko participated in SETI@Home during the month of September. Currently Michael has 1,055,000 credits of knowledge. - Mike Timko participated in Galaxy Zoo during the month of September. Galaxy Zoo is an online astrological mapping program. - Jeanne Timko, Michael J Timko Sr. & Michelle Timko recycle paper, plastic, aluminum & glass. During the month of September they recycled 63.8 pounds. [Highest Math Group in First Grade and Second Highest Reading Group in First Grade]. Megan, Emma and Chris - Also have traveled back to the 1860's and visited the Battle of Waynesboro, VA to observe and record the events there. Megan, Emma and Chris - Have also traveled to the Virginia Beach Marine Science Museum and learned about all sorts of Aquatic Creatures and Environments as well as the tools required to work therein. Have also studied the tidal system via first hand experimentation in Virginia Beach. COMMENTS: None

The USS HELEN PAWLOWSKI NCC-8494 is a correspondence chapter of STARFLEET International. We are a Star Trek fan club that come together on a monthly basis via computer chat areas, telephone, and even video conferencing to discuss events in the Star Trek universe, whether or not your interest lie in the Classic Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager or Star Trek: Enterprise. Many of our crew enjoy going to the movies, to Star Trek and other Sci-Fi conventions. A great part of being able to experi-ence the dream of Gene Roddenberry gives many of us the op-portunity to help our community by volunteering in community projects such as the Angel Tree Project over Christmas and the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots. While many volunteer to participate, others do not, but our main goal is to have FUN!
