UNITED SOCIETY OF PASTEL ARTISTS
THE PASTEL PALETTE
JANUARY, 2010
FEATURED MEMBER ARTIST
Kamillia Hardy
I came to art rather late in my life. Always, I loved to draw, however, I
didn’t take it seriously. As a young woman, my time and energies were taken
with helping my husband get his education and with raising five children. Even
though our family was still young, it came my turn to go to college where I
majored in English and minored in Spanish and French. But, more and more, I
seriously longed to draw and paint. Ten years after receiving my B.A., which
took nine years in itself, I went back to school in art. In 1987 I received my
Masters in Drawing and Painting from California State University. My education
has included workshops given by wonderful artists in monotypes, oils and
pastels.
Since 1987, I have taught drawing, painting, monotypes and most
consistently, pastels in local colleges. At this time, I teach only pastels at Santa
Ana College. My adjunct career has been very rewarding. One always learns so
much when teaching a subject. However, most satisfying has been watching my
students develop their skills and confidence. And, also to observe friendships
develop around the common passion of art. A number of my students have
become professional artists and some are well known locally for their work and
contributions to organizations. I have been rewarded over the years in the
warm and sustaining friendships I have with fellow artists, teachers, and with
present and former students. I have great respect and empathy for those
women particularly, who make efforts to balance their domestic lives and
obligations with their love of making art.
I am very indebted to my husband, Carmon, who has always been a great
support of my dreams. And, our children too have been so encouraging and
helpful. Being a wife, mother and grandmother has influenced me in many ways
as an artist and as a person.
For a number of years, I have focused on oil painting and pastels. Mary
Cassatt and Edgar Degas were early inspirations and remain tops in my
pantheon. I am just now returning to hand-printed monotypes and using them
as supports for pastels, a la Degas. My subjects have remained constant. I love
still life, figures, interiors and landscape. Like many artists, I am drawn to the
quotidian images of ordinary yet miraculous daily life whether they are on the
street or on the table. Whatever light falls on and gives form and color to
catches my interest. Figures involved in daily tasks or a lone teacup are
melancholy witnesses to the fragility of civilizations in our often troubled and
fractured world.
My style is representational, though sometimes painterly and
expressionistic. My art heroes are many. Among them are the Russian social
realism painters of the Soviet era, Hassam, Whistler, Cassatt and Degas, just to
name a few. My goal is to paint well enough to express my personal vision
sincerely and poetically.

ART SUBJECTS
If you don’t get the Pastel Journal emails, I suggest you sign up online.
As they so aptly say on their site, “At The Pastel Journal Blog, the staff
shares art-related news items and all the little tidbits we have to cut fromartist interviews in order to turn a two-hour conversation into a six-page
print article. We'll also bring you news about products, materials,
conferences and shows, as well as some rants about the blessings and
bloopers from life at the magazine.
Right now, the Blog has a Pastel Web Directory up, which is quite
informative and helpful in looking at other artist’s websites.
Artist and blogger Niall O'Neill, of County Cork, Ireland, says that his
reason for launching the blog "Artists in Pastel" was twofold: to create "acomprehensive international directory of pastels artists who have a web
presence; and to offer a critique of their websites (not, I emphasize, a
critique of their artwork)."
Each of O'Neill's 93 and counting blog posts highlights a different pastel
artist and shows a sample image that's representative of his or her work. His list of direct links to artist's websites is substantial and growing (and
chock-full of friends of the magazine!)—it's a wonderful resource,
whether you're looking for a potential pastel teacher or simply a jolt ofinspiration.

TIDBITS
Monday, July 30, 2007What does "simultaneous contrast” mean?
Posted on The Pastel Journal blog by Richard McKinley
Simultaneous contrast is a term used to describe a visual phenomenon.
Everything in the visual world has a relationship. By understanding these
relationships, we’ll make better choices and end up with paintings thatbetter relay the natural world around us. The mind makes judgments from
the information provided by the eyes, so it’s imperative to learn to see
with sensitivity.
Simply put, simultaneous contrast teaches us that everything is affected
by its opposite. Something will look lighter when placed next tosomething dark, and warmer when placed next to something cool, and
visa versa. I’m fairly tall (6’3”) and in most situations I appear tall, but if
I’m on a bus with professional basketball players, I appear short. I didn’tchange, but my context did. When we paint, areas of shadow and light
get us into trouble because we attach black and white to them. But look
at the scale of value relationships, and you’ll see that what appears to bea highlight in one area becomes a shadow in another. It didn’t change, but
its relationship did.
Simultaneous contrast also applies to color relationships. A color might
appear cool in one setting and then warm in another due to the
relationship it shares with the adjacent colors. This is why the choices wemake when painting have ramifications. It’s all about relationships.
“Simultaneous contrast is not just a curious optical phenomenon; it is thevery heart of painting.”--Josef Albers (German artist/educator; 1888-
1976)
Grayscale In this value scale, representing black to white with a middlevalue running through the middle, notice how each side of the individual
values change; the middle value strip looks darker or lighter depending on
its relationship to the other values.
Richard McKinley is a painter, workshop instructor and contributing writer
for The Pastel Journal.

Georgia O’Keefe said:
To create one's own world in any of the arts takes courage.

It's on the strength of observation and reflection that one finds a way. So
we must dig and delve unceasingly.
