Using Scholars Portal E-books

Not all the Library's electronic books can be found in the Primo library catalogue. Some are available in separate, searchable collections like Scholars Portal E-books. It's a good place to look if you're having trouble finding what you need in the library catalogue.

In this video we'll look at how to locate and use it.

You can get to Scholars Portal E-books from the main library web site, library.wlu.ca. In the top navigation bar, click on Research Materials, then choose books.

From the Books page, choose the eBooks link.

Then click on Scholars Portal Books.

Finally, click on Connect to Resource.

If you're at home, you will be asked at this point to log in with your Laurier network login.

Now you can search for a book.

Type your search into the search box. We'll search here for global warming.

You can click the green button beside the search box to add another row.

We'll do that and type in Canada in the second search box.

If you're looking for a specific book title or author, you can specify your search better by using one of the options in the drop-down menu beside each search box.

We'll just click Search this time.

We get quite a few results.

If you need to, you can refine your search by clicking on some of the options in the right menu.

You can view a book by clicking on the title.

To read the book, click on the cover or on one of the section titles.

You can view more than one page at a time by clicking on the display options at the top.

Turn pages by clicking on the arrows at the top or at the side of the book pages.

Or you can skip to a certain page by typing it into the page number box at the top.

Let's go to page 88.

You can also search for words that appear in the book using the search box at the top.

To download or print, you'll need to first export to PDF, which you can do by clicking on Export to PDF below the book display.

You can type which pages to export in the window that pops up.

Please note that nearly all books have a limit on how many pages you can export, usually around 20% of the book.

Once you've done your export, the pdf shows up at the bottom of the screen. You can click on it to view, save, and print it.

You can also copy and paste text from the book by clicking on the Copy Text button at the bottom of the screen. After you've done this, drag the cursor to highlight the section you want to copy.

It will show up in a pop-up window along with information about the book so you remember where you got it from.

You can copy and paste the contents of this window.

Please note that it doesn't give you the page number, so you'll have to make note of that separately.

If you create an account and log in, you can bookmark pages, write notes, and highlight.

You can save these in your account so they are still there when you come back to the book later.
