What is ActivExpression
ActivExpression is a voting response system which allows your learner to interact with a quiz
you have made. The quiz can be multiple choices, true/false, yes/no , numerical or text
input type answers. The response pads allow your learners to vote anonymously * and
allow everyone to take part in the quiz. At the end of each question you can see the results
in various views and at the end of the quiz you can see the overall results if you wish.
*the results are only anonymous if you wish them to be you can take note of which learner
has which response pad.
What is ActivInspire?
ActivInspire is a user-friendly tool to help teachers create excellent interactive lessons. You
can install ActivInspire on the computer you use for preparing lessons as well as the
computer you use in the class.
The Activboard
1. Switch on the Activboard before starting your computer. The power indicator light,
in the top-left hand corner of your board, should be illuminated when the Activboard
is switched on.
2. Calibrating the board by right clicking using the mouse on the Activboard logo.
Select the calibrate option and follow the instructions using the pen and the board.
You can find the calibration tool by clicking on the Activboard icon
on the bottom right-hand of your screen.

The Activpen
Tips for using the Activpen:
Moving the cursor – Hold the nib lightly on the Activboard; don’t push the nib into,
move the pen around and the cursor will follow your pen.
Left-click – Tap the pen nib firmly but quickly on the Activboard.
Right-click – Hover over the Activboard, less than a quarter of an inch away and click
the orange button on the pen.
Click and drag – click on the object you want to move, hold the pen nib down on the
board and then move the pen, the object will then move.
Double- click – two firm quick taps on the board will work.
Launching ActivInspire
When you have logged on, you will need to go to the Window’s Start Button

Creating Questions
In order to create a series of questions you will need to click on the Insert> Questions
option on the toolbar.
When the Question Manager opens you will see the following dialogue box:
1. Start by choosing the type of question you want to ask.
2. Type in the question and press ENTER.
You will notice the dialogue box changes to show the Question Properties on the right-
hand side. Click back into the question at this point.

3. Type in the answers and tick the correct answer box.
Discard any answers you don’t need by selecting the red X on the answer.
4. Make sure you increase the specific number of responses, if required.
5. You may also wish to add a time limit to the question.
(NB. Don’t worry about the follow-on
question).
6. Select the template for your question.
(NB select a template that includes
both the Question and the Options –
so you can see the question text and
the answers.)
7. Then select APPLY

8. To move onto the next question Select the Page button at the top of the Question Manager
box. Then repeat steps 1-8 until you’ve finished your questions.
When you’ve completed all your questions selected DONE and the questions will appear on your
Flipchart.

Using ActivExpression in the classroom
To use ActivExpression in the classroom you will need to ensure you have a working
Interactive Whiteboard and peripherals.
Adding the devices to the hub
To use ActivExpression you will need to first place the Hub into the USB port in the PC.
Then open your flipchart which you are using for the assessment.
You can allow learners to name their devices accordingly if you wish.
Registering the devices
1. Open the ActivInspire Software (see instructions above) and click on the Register
Icon on the toolbox.
2. Click on the ActivHub, and then the Device (ActivExpression)

3. Select Register(N.B. you may get a warning asking if you would like to delete
previously registered devices, click yes)
4. Select the amount of devices you want to register. If you want them to be named,
tick the Allow Expression and user naming box.
5. You will then be asked to limit the amount of characters that the learners can use.
(you may wish to select the default)
6. Follow the on screen instructions to register the devices.
If you choose to remain anonymous the numbers will be generated as you register.

Using the ActivExpression in Class
Using the response pads couldn’t be simpler. Give your learners their response pad and
open the flipchart. For every question you will need to click the Play button in the
toolbox. At the end of each question the results will be displayed.
Results
The results will automatically be displayed at the end of each question.
