Essential Understandings
Discrimination against African Americans continued after Reconstruction.
“Jim Crow” laws institutionalized a system of legal segregations.
African Americans differed in their responses to discrimination and “Jim Crow.”
Vocabulary
Racial segregation: separation of people based on race.
“Jim Crow” laws: an institutional system of legal segregation.
Plessy v. Ferguson: 1896 ruling by the Supreme Court that legalized “separate but equal” public facilities for African Americans and thus continued to make discrimination legal.
Vocabulary
Poll tax: a tax paid before a person is allowed to vote; similar to a registration fee.
Literacy test: to show proof of the ability to read and write as a requirement before voting.
Racial segregation
