Music for Gigs

For many students their first paid

performances are ―gigs‖ for holi-

days and special occasions. Free-

lancing brings the challenge of find-

ing appropriate sheet music at the

last minute, or accommodating the

wishes of a Bridezilla.

Standard repertoire will often fit

the bill, but lacking experience, our students may not know which

pieces will ―work‖ for these

occasions.

Spring Semester seems to be flying by! The library has been a hub of activity, including the well received

lobby performance by the Concert Choir. Despite this year’s financial challenges, the Music Collection has

received funds for special acquisitions (see below and page 4). I have tried to focus on practical material

while maintaining the scholarly excellence of the collections. There has been no change to subscriptions for

scholarly scores, RILM, New Grove online, Naxos Music Library, and journals. I continue to add to the web

subject guide for music (http://bsu.libguides.com/music) and the Music Collection blog

diction? The Music Collection

has added some diction aids to

help with standard repertoire.

These resources give word-by-

word translations and IPA

pronunciation for each lied,

aria or song.

The Pronunciation Guide and Diction Coach series also have

accompanying CDs. These have

a diction coach speaking the

poetic text as it should be sung,

and a second reading that leaves

time after each line for the

singer to repeat the text.

donations of sheet music.

Former Director of the School

of Music, Dr. Peter A.

McAllister, donated over 400

items for guitar, including solo

music, duets, and etudes.

The estate of Louise DeBord

donated over 1,000 pieces of

sheet music representing popular music from the first half

of the twentieth century to

Archives and Special Collections. Over 200 have

been added to CardCat.
