Care and safety information● Power consumption

– When the system is switched toStandby mode, it is still consuming power.To disconnect the system from the powersupply completely, remove the AC powerplug from the wall jack.

Introduction

● Avoid high temperatures, moisture,water and dust– Do not expose the player, batteries ordiscs to humidity, rain, sand or excessiveheat (caused by heating equipment ordirect sunlight).

● Avoid condensation– The lens may cloud over when theplayer is suddenly moved from cold towarm surroundings, making it impossibleto play a disc. Leave the player in thewarm environment until the moistureevaporates.

● Do not block the vents– Do not operate the DVD Player in anenclosed cabinet. Allow about 10 cm (4inches) of free space around the player foradequate ventilation.

● Care of the cabinet– Use a soft cloth slightly moistened witha mild detergent solution. Do not use asolution containing alcohol, spirits,ammonia or abrasives.

● Finding a suitable location– Place the player on a flat, hard, andstable surface.

● Disc handling– To clean a CD, wipe it in astraight line from the centertoward the edge using a soft,lint-free cloth. A cleaningagent may damage the disc.– Write only on the printedside of a CD-R/CD-RW and only with asoft felt-tipped pen.– Handle the disc by its edge; do nottouch the surface.

Scan Mode(Progressive/Interlace selector)

This switch will change the type of signaloutput from the Component Video Outon the DVD player.

Interlace:Select this setting when connected to astandard (interlace format) TV.

Progressive:Select progressive when you have a TVthat can accept progressive signals (480/525p) to enjoy accurate colourreproduction and high quality images.

Helpful hints:– During Progressive mode, 4:3 aspectimages are distorted when TV Shape is set to‘16:9’ . Change the TV screen’s aspect ratiosettings to AUTO to avoid image distortion.(see page 29 “4:3 Aspect”).– Some TVs and projectors are notcompatible with this DVD Player. If picturedistorted during progressive signals, switchthe SCAN MODE to Interlace.

IMPORTANT!– If your TV only has a singleAntenna In jack (labeled as 75 ohmor RF In), you will need an RFmodulator in order to view DVDplayback on the TV. The RFmodulator is not supplied with theDVD Player. See your electronicsretailer or contact Philips for detailson RF modulator availability andoperations.

Using an accessory RF modulator

1 Use the composite video cable (yellow) toconnect the DVD Player’s CVBS jack tothe video input jack on the RF modulator.

2 Use the RF coaxial cable (not supplied) toconnect the RF modulator to your TV’sRF jack.

Getting Started

Step 1: Inserting batteries intothe Remote Control

1 Open the battery compartment.

2 Insert two batteries type R06 or AA,following the indications (+-) insidethe compartment.

3 Replace the cover.

Using the Remote Control tooperate the Player

1 Aim the RemoteControl directly at theremote sensor (iR) onthe front panel of theDVD Player.

2 Do not put any objectsbetween the RemoteControl and the DVDPlayer while operatingthe DVD Player.

CAUTION!– Remove batteries if they areexhausted or if the Remote Controlwill not be used for a long time.– Do not use old and new ordifferent types of batteries incombination.– Batteries contain chemicalsubstances, so they should bedisposed properly.

Step 2: Setting up the TV

IMPORTANT!Make sure you have completed allthe necessary connections. (Seepages 7-8 “Connecting TV”).

1 Turn on the TV and set it to the correctVideo-In channel. You should see the bluePhilips DVD background screen on theTV.

2 Usually these channels are between thelowest and highest channels and may becalled FRONT, A/V IN, or VIDEO. See yourTV manual for more details.➜ Or, you may go to channel 1 on yourTV, then press the Channel down buttonrepeatedly until you see the Video Inchannel.➜ Or, the TV Remote Control may have abutton or switch that chooses differentvideo modes.➜ Or, set the TV to channel 3 or 4 if youare using an RF modulator.

3 If you are using other external equipment(audio system or receiver), turn it on andselect the appropriate input source forthe DVD Player. Refer to the equipmentowner’s manual for details.

Step 4: Setting the speakers’channels

You can adjust the delay times (centreand surround only) and volume level forindividual speakers. These adjustments letyou optimize the sound according toyour surroundings and setup.

IMPORTANT!The speaker settings only available onMulti-channel audio outputs. You canalso press SOUND MODE button toselect Multi-channel.

1 Press SYSTEM MENU.

2 Press 4 to select {SETUP}.

3 Press 1 2 to highlight {SPEAKERS}, thenpress 4.

4 Press 34 to highlight one of the options,then press 2.

{FRONT SIZE, CENTER SIZE,SURROUND SIZE}OFF – when no speaker is connected.LARGE – when connected speakers canproduce low frequency signals below120Hz.SMALL – when connected speakerscannot produce low frequency signalsbelow 120Hz.

{SUBWOOFER}ON – when a subwoofer is connected.OFF – when no subwoofer is connected.

{FRONT DISTANCE}– Sets the distance from your listeningplace to the front speakers (1 ~ 11.8m).

{CENTER/REAR DISTANCE}– Sets the distance from your listeningplace to the center/rear speakers. (choicesdifferent depending on the {FRONTDISTANCE} setting).

5 Press 1 2 3 4 to adjust the setting thatbest suit your surround sound needs.

6 Press OK to confirm.

Helpful Hints:– Use the longer delay time settings whenthe surround/rear speakers are closer to thelistener than the front speakers.

Advance Bass Management

Movie Mode

This menu allows you to adjust eachspeaker volume for playing all discsexcept SACD audio playback.

➜ The volume balance value ranges from-6dB to +7dB.

Music Mode

When music mode is set, speaker settingswill be applied during SACD playbackonly.Additional adjustments available in SACDbass managements are:– Cut-off frequency adjustment:60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz and 120Hz– Slope adjustment:12dB/oct, 18dB/oct and 24dB/oct

Playing discs

1 Press SELECT button until “DVD” islighted on the remote control displaypanel (see remote control, page 15).

2 Turn on the TV and set it to the correctVideo In channel. (See page 16 “Setting upthe TV”).

3 Press STANDBY-ON B on the front ofthe DVD Player.➜ You should see the Philips DVDbackground screen on the TV.

4 Press OPEN/CLOSE 0 to open the disctray and load a disc. Press again to closethe disc tray.➜ Make sure the label is facing up. Fordouble-sided discs, make sure the label ofthe side you want to play is facing up.

5 Playback may start automatically(depending on the disc type).➜ If a disc menu appears on the TV, see“Using the Disc Menu”.➜ If the disc is locked by parental control,you must enter your four-digit password.(See pages 34-35).

6 At any time, simply press STOP 9 tostop playback.

Disc Operations

Resuming playback from the laststopped point(DVD/DVD-A/VCD/CD)

Resume playback of the last five discs,even if the disc was remove from thePlayer.

1 Load one of the last five discs.➜ “READING” appears.

2 Press PLAY B and the disc will play fromthe last point.

To cancel resume mode● While play is stopped, press STOP 9

again.

Shuffle(DVD/DVD-A/VCD/CD/SACD/MP3)

On a DVD,DVD-A disc - this shuffles theplaying order of chapters within a title, ifthe title has more than one chapter.

On an Audio CD, Video CD, SACD - thisshuffles all the tracks in random orderwithin a disc.

1 Press SHUFFLE during playback.➜ SHUFFLE appears on the TV screen forabout two seconds.

2 To return to normal playback, pressSHUFFLE again.

Helpful Hint:– For SACD, shuffle functions works in thecurrently selected area only.

Playback controlsUnless otherwise stated, all operationsdescribed are based on Remote Controluse. Some operations can be carried outusing the DVD system Menu.

Pausing playback(DVD/DVD-A/VCD/CD)

1 During playback, press PAUSE ;.➜ Play will pause and sound will be mute.

2 Press PAUSE ; repeatedly to select theprevious or next picture frame.

3 To return to normal playback, pressPLAY B.

Selecting a title (track) /chapter(DVD/DVD-A/VCD/CD)

1 Press T or S briefly duringplayback to go to the next chapter/trackor to return to the beginning of thecurrect chapter/track respectively.

2 Press S twice briefly to step back tothe previous chapter/track.

3 To go directly to any chapter/track, enterthe chapter/track number using thenumerical keys (0-9).

Zoom (DVD/DVD-A/VCD/JPEG)

Zooming allows you to enlarge the videoimage during playback.

1 Press ZOOM during playback to selectthe zoom factor.

2 Press 1 2 3 4 to move through thezoomed image.

3 Press ZOOM repeatedly to increase anddecrease the zoom factor.➜ Playback will continue.

2 When the disc reaches your selectedending point, press REPEAT A-B again.➜ ‘A-B’ appears on the TV screen, and therepeat sequence begins.

Selecting a title

Some DVDs may contain several titles. Ifthe disc has a title menu recorded on it,you can start playback from the selectedmovie title.

1 Press RETURN.➜ The disc title menu appears on the TVscreen.

2 Use 3 4 1 2 or the numeric keypad(0-9) to select a play option.

3 Press OK to confirm.

Camera Angle

If the disc contains sequences recordedfrom different angle, this allows you toview picture from different angle.

● Press ANGLE repeatedly to select adifferent desire angle.➜ Playback changes to the selected angle.

Changing the Audio Language

● Press AUDIO repeatedly to selectdifferent audio languages.

Subtitles Language

● Press SUBTITLE repeatedly to selectdifferent subtitle languages.

Program Playback(DVD/DVD-A/VCD/CD/SACD/MP3)

You can play the contents of the disc inthe order you want by programming thetracks to be played. Up to 20 tracks canbe stored.

1 Press SYSTEM MENU and press 3 4to select {TOOLBAR} option.

2 Use the 1 2 3 4 keys on the RemoteControl to navigate in the menu.

Move to {PROGRAM} and press 4.Move to {TRACKS} and press 2.➜ The ‘Program’ menu appears.

3 Use 3 or 4 to select your preferred Titleor Chapter number.

Erasing a selection in a Program

1 Press 4 to select the {PLAYLIST}.

Erasing all selections

Playing MP3/JPEG/Kodak PictureCD

This player can playback MP3, JPEG, orKodak Picture CD files on a personallyrecorded CD-R/RW disc or commercialCD.

IMPORTANT!You have to turn on your TV and set tothe correct Video In channel. (See page 16“Setting up the TV”).

1 Load a disc.➜ The disc reading time may exceed 30seconds due to the complexity of the fileconfiguration.➜ Playback starts and the playlist appearsautomatically. If the disc includes bothMP3 and picture files, the selection ofmenu appears on the TV screen.

2 Use 3 4 to select a album/track andpress OK to open the folder.

3 Use 1 2 to select a album/track in thenext layer to playback.

4 Playback will start at the selected file andcontinue to the end of the folder.

5 To stop playback, press STOP 9.

● Press DISC MENU to return to thethumbnail screen (for JPEG files).

Special features for picture discplayback

Slide show playback setting

You can set the duration of each picturetime playback.

Rotating the picture

Move to {VIEW} and press 2.Move to {ROTATE} and press 2 tochoose the following: {- 180 to + 180}.

3 Select an item and press OK.

Playing Super Audio CD (SACD)

There are three types of SACD discs:single layer, double layer or hybrid disc.The hybrid disc contains both SuperAudio CD and standard audio CD layers,only the SACD layer is possible toplayback on this DVD player.

1 Load a SACD.➜ The disc menu appears on the TVscreen.

2 Playback will start automatically.➜ If the SACD consists of mulit-channeland stereo tracks, the setting willautomatically switch according to the{Analogue Output} selection.➜ To playback stereo tracks, use 3 4keys to make your selection from the discmenu, then press PLAY B.

Subwoofer frequency

Enables you to select Subwooferfrequency output between 120Hz {LOW}and 200Hz {HIGH}.

SACD Direct

Enables you (with a suitable speakersystem where the satelite speaker hassufficient bass response to 40Hz) tobypass the bass management system formulti-channel SACD playback. This helpsto preserve maximum sound quality ofyour SACD.

Helpful hints:– When a locked disc is loading, the DVDPlayer will prompt the four-digit password(“0000” is the default password).– To change the password, refer to option{CHANGE PIN}.

Enabling Play once/Play Always

1 Insert a disc.➜ The ‘child safe’ dialog appears on theTV screen.

2 Press 3 4 to select {Play once} or {Playalways}. Then, enter the four-digit code.➜ {Play once} – the disc can play as longas it is in the disc tray and the DVDsystem power is on.➜ {Play always} – the disc will play always.even the Child Lock is set to Ç (lock).

3 If you later want to lock the disc so it willnot play always, insert the disc and pressÇ while the safe { icon appears on theTV screen.➜ Locked | icon will appear. You mayneed to remove the disc or turn off thepower before the disc is completelylocked. The next time when you insertthe disc, it will not play unless you enterthe four-digit code.

Country

● Parental Level codings are applicable onlyfor the country specified on the disc setby the disc manufacturer.

● So, for some discs, you may need tochoose the country for which the disc iscoded in order to play at the ParentalLevel you select.

Parental Level

Some DVDs may have a parental levelassigned to the complete disc or tocertain scenes on the disc. This featurelets you set playback limitation level. Therating levels are from 1 to 8 and arecountry dependant. You can prohibit theplaying of certain discs that are notsuitable for your children or have certaindiscs played with alternative scenes (ifavailable on disc).

● VCD, SVCD, CD have no level indication,so parental control has no effect on thosekinds of discs. This also applies to mostillegal DVDs.

● Press 4 to {PARENTAL LEVEL}, thenpress 1 2 to select a rating from 1 to 8for the disc inserted.➜ Select “0” to deactivate Parental Level➜ Select a rating from 1 to 8; discs orscenes with the same rating or lower willplay. Higher rated discs or scenes will notplay unless you enter your 4-digitpassword.

Helpful Hint:– Some DVDs are not encoded with arating though the movie rating may beprinted on the Disc cover. The rating levelfeature does not prohibit play of such Discs.

Problem Solution

No power – Check if the AC power cord is properly connected.– Press the STANDBY ON B on the front of the

DVD Player to turn on the power.

No picture – Refer to your TV’s manual for correct Video Inchannel selection. Change the TV channel until yousee the DVD screen.

– Check if the TV is switched on.

Distorted picture – Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion mayappear, depending on the disc being played. This isnot a malfunction.

‘Snowing’ effect when using HDMI – Check if your HDMI is faulty or properly connected.or DVI connection – Check if your device supports HDCP.

TV display a ‘blank’ or ‘distorted’ screen – TV is incompitable with the resolution you chose.after you switch the resolution on the – You may change to resolution of the player by{High Def-Video}. connecting your TV to any of the interlace connector

No sound or distorted sound – Adjust the volume.– Check the audio cables and make sure both are

Picture freezes momentarily – Check the disc for fingerprints/scratches andduring playback clean with a soft cloth wiping from center to edge.

No audio at digital output – Check the digital connections.– Check if your receiver can decode MPEG-2 or DTS.

Make sure digital output is set to PCM Only.– Check if the audio format of the selected audio

language matches your receiver capabilities.

Troubleshooting

Disc can’t play – A DVD+R/DVD+RW/CD-R must be finalized.– Ensure the disc label is facing up.– Check if the disc is defective by trying another disc.– If you have recorded a Picture CD or MP3 CD

yourself, ensure that your disc contains at least 10pictures or 5 MP3 tracks.

– Check the Disc’s Region Code.

No return to start-up screen when – Reset the unit by switching the player off, then ondisc is removed again.

The player does not respond to – Aim the Remote Control directly at the sensorthe Remote Control on the front of the player.

– Reduce the distance to the player.– Replace the batteries in the Remote Control.– Re-insert the batteries with their polarities (+/–

signs) as indicated.

Buttons do not work – To completely reset the player, unplug the ACcord from the AC outlet for 5-10 seconds.

Player does not respond to some – Operations may not be permitted by the disc.operating commands during playback. Refer to the instructions of the disc jacket.

DVD Player cannot read – Use a commonly available cleaning CD/DVD toCDs/DVDs clean the lens before sending the DVD Player for

repair.

Menu items cannot be selected – Press STOP twice before selecting the System Menu.– Depending on the disc availability, some menu items

cannot be selected.
