1 Introduction

As well as being a dial to IP EFTPOS protocol converter, the Axon G2210 is also a GPRS router allowing IP devices to attached to GPRS networks. This capability means that remote and mobile devices can attached to Internet hosts using the public GPRS networks.

This document details the procedure for connecting an Axon G2210 to a personal computer or notebook computer via the Ethernet port, changing the Axon’s GPRS settings and connecting to a host computer via the Internet.

1.1 Assumptions

To carry out this procedure the following hardware and knowledge are assumed:

Hardware Required :

1. A personal computer or notebook computer with an Ethernet port. In most cases this computer is running the Windows operating system (95, 98, 2000 or XP)

2. A Braintree Axon G2210 with appropriate power supply for your region. This Axon should have been delivered to you configured to have DNS forwarding on.

3. An Ethernet cross-over cable to connect the computer to the Axon.

4. An “Internet enabled” SIM from the local GPRS service provider. This SIM should be in an unlocked state.

Knowledge Required :

1. How to change the IP address on the Ethernet interface of the computer.

2. How to change the default gateway and DNS server address of the computer.

3. The Access Point Name (APN), for the SIM from the local GPRS service provider.

4. The username and password for the GPRS service. In some cases no username and password are required.

5. It is assumed that the default IP address of the Axon is 192.168.0.250 and that the computer will be given an address within the 192.168.0.??? range.

6. Do not give the computer the same address as the Ax on (192.168.0.250).

1.3 Terminology

Term Definition

APN Access Point Name or APN is the name of an access point for GPRS. Examples include internet, vf.internet.au and telstra.internet

Axon A GPRS hardware router supplied by Braintree Communications

Cross-over cable

A network cable with TX and RX (transmit and receive) reversed at either end to provide a direct peer-to-peer network connection.

Default gateway When setting up the PC to operate with an Axon, the gateway setting (in the Network settings) must be set to the IP address of the Axon. Using the IP address of the Axon as the gateway, lets your computer know that you will use the Axon to access remote networks.

DNS Directory Name Server – a server that converts IP addresses to names. eg. 64.233.167.99 translates to google.com

GPRS Short for General Packet Radio Service, a standard for wireless communications which runs at speeds up to 115 kilobits per second.

Internet A network of computer networks which operates world-wide using a common set of communications protocols.

NMS Network Management Server – an online system used to remotely monitor devices on a network.

SIM Subscriber Identity Module – a small rectangular piece of plastic with a layer of copper. Provided as part of a mobile telephone service.

2 Detailed Procedure

The following is a more detailed explanation of the steps required to connect a computer to the Internet using an Axon G2210.

Attach the antenna, insert the SIM and power the Ax on.

The Axon G2210 is supplied with a stub antenna that allows the GPRS modem to connect to the GPRS network. To fit the antenna, carefully screw the antenna retaining nut onto the threaded antenna connector and tighten until the antenna is firm and does not move easily. Over-tightening may cause the thread to strip.

In poor signal strength areas a higher gain antenna may be needed. Contact your local antenna company for options. Note that external antennas must have a SMA male connector.

3 Troubleshooting Guide

Problem Possible cause and solution

Axon does not power (PWR light does not illuminate)

Faulty power supply. Check cables, adaptors and power points. Try another unit’s power supply if available.

No link and activity lights on Axon Wrong cable connecting computer to Axon. It must be a cross-over cable.

Cannot display Axon login screen Wrong IP address entered into browser or IP address of Axon same as IP address of computer.

Username entered as g2210 rather than G2210. The user name is case sensitive.

IP address of computer is not on same LAN as Axon (192.168.0.???)

Axon configuration screen is displayed, but cannot log into Axon using browser

Wrong username or password used. Username is G2210 and the password is the four-digit serial number of the unit.

GPRS module fails to get IP address

Wrong APN, username or password entered into Axon. Check details with GPRS service provider.

Wrong method of authentication. Try different methods (PAP, CHAP)

GPRS details were not saved prior to Axon reboot.

No signal or poor signal strength. Check antenna connection. Move Axon to another location. Consider using a higher gain antenna.

SIM not provisioned for data. Check details with GPRS service provider.

Computer cannot reach a known host name connected to the Internet

Try using the hosts IP address rather than domain name. If the IP address works, this means the DNS on the computer is not configured correctly. DNS forwarding not set in Axon.

Connection unreliable and only one or two signal strength lights illuminated.

Check antenna connection. Move Axon to another location. Consider using a higher gain antenna.
