INTRODUCTION

The Standard Method of Measurement (SMM) Code is a structured system that is an alternative to the Price Code used to compile Bills of Quantities with Headings and Subheadings in a structured format. SMM Codes are allocated to Price Codes on the Price Code documents. The SMM Code can be a maximum of 20 characters and is attached to the Price Code.

SMM LIBRARIES

Candy has four (4) Libraries available that are updated regularly by CCS to ensure that information is kept with modern time and accurate. These Libraries are:

• UK - Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement 4.

• UK - Railway Method of Measurement 2.

• UK - Standard Method of Measurement for Highway Works.

• RSA – ASAQS bill format.

To obtain access to the above Libraries, you may contact your Supervisor or a CCS Consultant to forward you the Library you require. Alternatively, you may create your own Library.

CREATING A SMM BILL OF QUANTITIES

It is recommended to create a standard SMM Bill of Quantities document if you are regularly going to create Bills of Quantities. To create a new SMM Bill of Quantities, take the following steps:

• Step 1: Under the Estimating tab select the icon or select Documents > Estimating

Document Manager.

• Step 2: Under the Estimating Bills tab, click on New Document > 1. Bill Pricing > 1.1 Standard Bill of Quantities.

• Step 3: Rename the New Document to 1.1 SMM Bill of Quantities.

• Step 4: Click on Select.

SMM BILL LAYOUT

It is recommended to create a SMM Bill Layout if you are regularly going to create Bills of Quantities. To create a new SMM Bill Layout, take the following steps:

• Step 1: Open the SMM BOQ document by selecting Documents > 1.1 SMM Bill of Quantities.

• Step 2: Select View > Add/Remove columns.

• Step 3: Set up a new document containing the columns as specified below.

CREATING THE SMM ORDERED BILL

To create a Bill where items are to be ordered strictly in accordance with the Method of Measurement, take the following steps:

• Step 1: Create a New Job.

• Step 2: Set the Master to be one of the Libraries referred to in SMM Libraries above.

• Step 3: In the New Job, create a Structure of Headings with the appropriate Levels.

The lowest Level Heading must have a Bill Codes attached to it, otherwise the subsequent steps will not work. To define and add the Bill Codes, take the following steps:

• Step 1: Under the Estimating tab > Main > Definitions & Settings. Alternatively, you may

select the icon on the toolbar.

• Step 2: Click on 3.1 Bill codes (Zone code).

• Step 3: Add in the Bill Codes in the Bill code definitions panel, then select OK.

• Step 4: Add in the Bill Codes in line with Bill Heading Description.

• Step 5: Open the master Bill of Quantities by holding the Shift Key and clicking on the icon.

It is easier to open the master with the same layout as the Bill being created. Do this by holding the shift key and clicking on the SMM layout you created in the Blue Book (Document Manager.

To show both documents as above on one screen, make use of the Size to top half icon and

the Size to bottom half icon on the toolbar.

Collapse / Expand Headings

The Master document will by default open with all Level Headings expanded. To collapse all Headings, ensure the document is live and take either options below:

• Option 1: Press Ctrl + Shift + Spacebar simultaneously.

• Option 2: Select View > Headings > Close ALL Headings.

Copy Information from Master to BOQ

To copy information from the Master document to the new Bill document, take the following steps:

• Step 1: In the Master document, open / expand the sections until the required Bill items are displayed.

• Step 2: Select the Shift Key on the keyboard and select all the bill items to be copied.

• Step 3: Drag and drop the bill items to the new Bill where it needs to be displayed.

It does not matter which order they are dropped in the relevant section of your new Bill as all the items will be re-ordered once all the items have been added.

Importing Headings from Master

Notice that none of the Method of Measurement headings have been added at this point.

To import the Method of Measurement headings, take the following steps:

• Step 1: In the new Bill document, right click on the SMM Code Heading column and select Insert SMM Headings.

• Step 2: The Insert SMM Headings dialogue box will appear. Select Yes to confirm.

After selecting Yes the Bill will be rearranged with the headings inserted in the correct position.

This process can be repeated as often as necessary. New items can be added to the new Bill and rearranged at any time. If the SMM Library is priced, the pricing codes will be added to the new job and depending on your settings will be immediately priced or auto-priced when required.

Click on the links to download. This will be downloaded to your Downloads folder in your explorer. Access your Downloads folder and move the files to the directory you have registered in Candy.
